☆ Regional bank shares slump as lenders warn of more pain from higher interest rates

Regional banks suffered a steep sell-off Friday after a number of weak quarterly earnings reports highlighting the negative impact from higher interest rates soured investor sentiment toward the industry. Regions Financial, a Birmingham, Alabama-based lender, posted a 6.5% decline in net interest income compared with the previous quarter. NII is the difference between interest banks earn on loans and what they pay out on deposits. As interest rates rise, lenders are pressured to pay more to keep depositors. Higher rates could lead to more losses on banks' bond portfolios and contribute to funding pressures as institutions are forced to pay higher rates for deposits.

The UAW last expanded its strikes on Oct. 11 when members walked out at Ford's Kentucky truck plant, the company's largest and most profitable plant globally. Fain said last week that UAW members would now walk out of additional Detroit Three facilities without warning rather than waiting until Fridays to announce new plans, as the union had done initially. UAW members who went on strike at Mercedes supplier ZF's plant in Alabama last month demanding higher pay and better healthcare benefits ended a nearly month-long walkout on Thursday.

That said, competition for homes on the market is likely to be worse in a few years as interest rates cool, she said. "When interest rates come down, everyone's going to come back to the marketplace," said Cohn.

New York CNN —When Snapchat announced last month that it had reached 5 million paying subscribers for its Snapchat+ service, it seemed like a stunning achievement. At 5 million subscribers paying $3.99 per month, Snapchat+ is set to earn around $239 million in annual revenue. That subscriber number is just a fraction of its overall user base of Snapchat, which has quietly become one of the world’s fastest-growing social platforms. The sales declines come as Snapchat, like other platforms, works to update its advertising business to cope with changes to Apple’s app tracking policies. Snapchat has grown its user base by more than 10% year-over-year for the past 16 consecutive quarters.

The man who has long been linked to the 2005 disappearance of the American teenager Natalee Holloway described in court documents released on Wednesday how he had brutally attacked her on a beach in Aruba after she rejected his advances. The monthly National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index dropped 4 points to 40 in October, and September's read was revised down 1 point. Builders point squarely to mortgage rates, which are now at a 23-year high.
