☆ OPEC’s sway over global oil prices may soon loosen, IEA says

The Paris-based IEA said Wednesday that it expects growth in global oil production — led by the United States and other countries in the Americas — to “inflate the world’s spare (oil) capacity cushion” to levels seen only once before, during the coronavirus pandemic when oil prices crashed. By 2030, global oil supply will outstrip demand by a “staggering” 8 million barrels per day, according to forecasts published by the agency in its medium-term oil market report. “(That’s) a major, major surplus and… might be one of the highest in the history,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, told reporters. The IEA also forecast growth in global oil demand to “slow progressively” over the rest of the decade, with demand peaking by 2029 before contracting slightly the year after. Despite the cuts, oil prices have trended downward in recent months.

I love “Seinfeld.” As for the actual comedian Jerry Seinfeld, however it’s…complicated. In most of his activities outside his eponymous classic sitcom (1989-1998), Seinfeld bemuses more than amuses me. This ambivalence only obliquely affects my opinion of “Unfrosted,” Seinfeld’s recently-released feature-length Netflix comedy. Still, I’ve always had the disquieting sense of Seinfeld somehow always Getting Away With Something when he pulls off this suave, impeccably creased act. Seinfeld isn’t about unsettling his viewers and I’m in no way suggesting he should be.

Matt Calkins, CEO and co-founder of Appian, said that though internet giants like Microsoft , Amazon , and Google are spending billions on the tech, ensuring success in AI is "not just about money." "AI is not a place where money makes more money," Calkins told CNBC in an interview at its London bureau on Tuesday. Microsoft has struck a similar deal with Mistral, taking a 15 million euro ($16 million) stake in the French AI firm. Separately, Amazon has invested a whopping $4 billion into U.S. AI firm Anthropic, which is behind the Claude AI system. "The best AI will be the AI you put your data into, not whoever bought the biggest stack," he said.

Amgen is among the leaders of a pack of drugmakers racing to join the market with their own weight loss treatments. Amgen's drug, MariTide, is taken less frequently than Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound, and may cause longer-lasting weight loss than the market leaders' injections. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are also working on new weight loss drugs. The competition for a slice of the weight loss market has only grown more fierce in recent months.
