Brazil's telecommunications regulator threatened sanctions against Elon Musk's satellite internet firm Starlink, as a public confrontation with the billionaire escalates over the country's decision to block his social media company X. Last week, Brazil's supreme court ordered a nationwide suspension of X for not appointing a legal representative by a court-mandated deadline, in line with the country's laws. Anatel, Brazil's telecommunications regulator, has instructed internet providers to block access to X following the court order. Artur Coimbra, a commissioner at Anatel, told Reuters that Starlink is the only company that has told the regulator that it would not comply with the court decision. CNBC has reached out to Anatel and SpaceX, which runs Starlink, for comment.

A panel of Brazil's federal supreme court justices voted unanimously to uphold orders suspending the use of Elon Musk's social network X nationwide. X had earlier defied court requests to take down accounts or posts that it said violated Brazil's laws on political misinformation and hate speech online. The court also froze the financial assets of another Musk-led business, satellite internet service Starlink, in Brazil to ensure his social network would pay its fines. Brazil's telecoms regulator Anatel instructed internet service providers including Starlink to block access to X in the country until it complies with the court orders. However, some social media users in Brazil are moving to other social networks.

How Elon Musk’s endorsement of Trump may have backfired

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk listens to President Donald Trump during a meeting with business leaders in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Feb. 3, 2017. "They want to make Trump, Elon and people like them look like plutocrats," he said. "Elon Musk created the opportunity that Donald Trump took to unmask himself as rabidly anti-union, and he did that by praising Elon Musk's anti-union, union-busting perspective and endorsing the idea of illegally firing striking workers," he said. Harris, who is not related to Kamala Harris, said he views Musk's endorsement as a net negative. "No one views Elon Musk as a voice of the middle class," he said.

Brazil's supreme court on Friday ordered a nationwide suspension of Elon Musk's social network X after the company vowed to defy earlier court orders concerning content moderation and the appointment of a legal representative in the country. Hours later, the court issued a second order suspending some of the measures in its first 51-page order against X. A suspension of X in Brazil could cause business problems for Musk's already embattled company. Musk has repeatedly denounced de Moraes' court orders as censorship. In its Thursday statement, X said de Moraes court had taken "illegal actions" against the company.

Elon Musk has attacked voting by mail as an "insane" idea that encourages election fraud, but he voted by mail twice when he lived in California, according to records of his voting history obtained by NBC News. Musk voted by mail in November 2016, the year Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, and in the November 2018 midterm election, the records show. The state records show that Musk had a sparse history of voting in California. This is the first time Musk's California voting records have been made public. Voting by mail was the choice of a majority of California voters both times Musk voted.

X Global Government Affairs issued a statement on Thursday evening ahead of an anticipated suspension of its platform in Brazil. A suspension of X in Brazil could cause serious business problems for the already embattled social network. And under Brazil's laws, social networks there have to employ someone who can receive and consider government takedown notices about political misinformation. X has no such employee in Brazil, after the company said it was removing all its employees from the country earlier this month. NASA will call on SpaceX to bring home two astronauts who have been stuck on the International Space Station since early June after their Boeing spacecraft ran into several problems midflight, the agency said Saturday. While the agency has finally settled on how to bring the astronauts back, their return trip will not be immediate. Instead, Wilmore and Williams will remain at the space station for about six more months before flying home in February. NASA said it will free up two seats on an upcoming SpaceX launch, known as Crew-9, that will be taking a new rotation of space station crew members to the orbiting outpost. The beleaguered Starliner capsule, meanwhile, will journey back to Earth without a crew, likely sometime in early September, according to NASA.

The test flight was originally intended to last about nine days. The decision to bring Starliner back from the ISS empty marks a dramatic about-face for NASA and Boeing, as the organizations were previously adamant that the capsule was the primary choice for returning the crew. But Starliner's crew flight test, which had been seen as the final major milestone in the spacecraft's development, faced problems — most notably with its propulsion system. "Boeing has worked very hard with NASA to get the necessary data to make this decision," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during a press conference with top NASA officials at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday. NASA will now conduct another phase of its Flight Readiness Review to determine when to bring the empty Starliner home.

Both Boeing and SpaceX have spent a decade working with NASA on their Starliner and Crew Dragon vehicles, respectively. CNN —The fate of two NASA astronauts — who have been in limbo aboard the International Space Station for about 80 days because of issues plaguing their Boeing Starliner spacecraft — may soon become clear. The space agency routinely delays news conferences, however, if discussions take longer than expected. Still, the federal agency funded SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and Boeing’s Starliner at the same time in 2014. The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, topped by a Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, lifts off on an uncrewed test flight on December 20, 2019, in Cape Canaveral, Florida. If the Starliner capsule is ultimately certified, it could join SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in making routine trips to the space station to rotate staff.

“You walk in, you say, ‘You want to quit?’ They go on strike,” Trump said of Musk, who is CEO of the EV car maker Tesla and SpaceX. It is illegal to fire workers who threaten to strike, because the right to strike is protected under federal labor law. “When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a Tuesday statement on the new charges. But another major U.S. labor union, the Teamsters, has yet to make an endorsement. Tesla has clashed with union proponents for years, and Tesla workers remain without a union.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s highly anticipated online event with former President Donald Trump was delayed Monday by technical difficulties as some users of Musk’s X app said they couldn’t access the discussion. Ron DeSantis launched his Republican presidential bid on X and was repeatedly disrupted because the site’s servers apparently couldn’t handle the surge in traffic. The event came as Trump has scaled back his in-person appearances after a would-be assassin shot at him at a July 13 rally in Pennsylvania. Some X users said they believed the problem was X’s technical capabilities, rather than an attack. Tim Walz, have also received a groundswell of social media support, with supporters posting a flurry of memes and videos.

SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule "Endurance" is seen during the Crew-3 mission for NASA on May 5, 2022. "I've been interested in space from a very young age … and for the first time, a private person can plan and design their own very personal mission," Wang told CNBC. Called "Fram2," an ode to the 19th-century polar expedition ship Fram, the mission is scheduled to launch near the end of this year. Wang said his proposal to SpaceX for the Fram2 mission came together after the historic private Inspiration4 flight in 2021. "We are trying to make the door wider and make people feel that everyone can have their own very personal space mission," Wang added.
