This summer, after 13 years, the police finally made an arrest in the Gilgo Beach murders. When I was reporting “Lost Girls,” my 2013 book about the case and victims, the police were largely silent. Since July, I’ve conducted interviews with people close to the Gilgo case during every chapter of its bizarre 13-year timeline. (Several sources asked for anonymity, concerned that public statements by insiders might undercut the case against Heuermann before the trial.) From the moment those women were found at Gilgo Beach, the law-enforcement culture of Suffolk County seemed so preternaturally ill suited to handle this case that a killer was allowed to roam free.

The material collected by the OSRIS-REx spacecraft three years ago from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu was to be unveiled at NASA's Johnston Space Center in Houston, a little more than two weeks after it was parachuted into the Utah desert. The landing of the return capsule capped a six-year joint mission of the U.S. space agency and the University of Arizona. It was only the third asteroid sample, and by far the biggest, ever returned to Earth for analysis, following two similar missions by Japan's space agency ending in 2010 and 2020. At the time it landed, the Bennu sample was estimated to weigh about 100 to 250 grams (3.5 to 8.8 ounces). Shares of EV charging network operator ChargePoint Holdings were trading lower on Wednesday after the company said it's raising $232 million via stock sales. ChargePoint said in a statement that a group of institutional investors has agreed to purchase $175 million in newly issued stock. The company also disclosed that it has raised $57 million during the current fiscal quarter via its existing "at-the-market" stock offering facility, for a total of $232 million in new funds. CFO Rex Jackson said in a statement that the new funds, together with a recently secured credit line, will support the company into early 2025. "These raises and our recently announced $150M revolving credit facility are consistent with our announced capital strategy to bolster our balance sheet," Jackson said, adding that the company has no further plans to offer stock via its at-the-market facility.

CNN —A pristine asteroid sample that could serve as a time capsule from the early days of our solar system has finally been revealed. “Far exceeding our goal of 60 grams, this is the biggest carbon-rich asteroid sample ever return to Earth. It’s the largest asteroid sample returned to Earth. The burst of gas lifted rocks and dust all the way from 19 inches (50 centimeters) beneath the space rock’s surface. About 70% of the sample will remain pristine in storage so future generations with better technology can learn even more than what’s now possible.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA on Wednesday showed off its first asteroid samples delivered last month by a spacecraft — the most ever returned to Earth. The ancient black dust and chunks are from the carbon-rich asteroid named Bennu, almost 60 million miles away. NASA's Osiris-Rex spacecraft collected the samples three years ago and then dropped them off sealed in a capsule during a flyby of Earth last month. Not only is he the Queen guitarist, but he is also an astrophysicist who recently helped NASA return its first ever asteroid sample to Earth. May said he was “immensely proud” to be part of the team that collected the sample from the asteroid Bennu. It collected the sample from the more than 4.5 billion-year-old asteroid in 2020 before setting off on its return journey to Earth, specifically Utah, in 2021. “Happy sample return day, and congratulations to all who work so incredibly hard on this mission, especially my dear friend Dante.”“God bless you all,” he added.
