The carrier gave 30,000 frequent flyer miles to customers who were most affected by the chaos. He said that the airline needs more gates at Newark Liberty International Airport because of frequent aircraft backups there. He said that extensively delayed departures, which piled up at its hub at Newark since last weekend, hurt its operation. United sent the 30,000 miles to customers who were delayed overnight or didn't get to their destination at all, a spokeswoman said. United fared worse than competitors with about half of its mainline schedule arriving late and almost a fifth canceled over that period, FlightAware data show.

The DOJ indicted Donald Trump for his handling of classified government documents. Prosecutors say they need more time to give Trump's lawyers security clearance to review documents. They said the delay was necessary because the case involves classified information and will require Trump's lawyers to obtain security clearances, a process that is underway. The Justice Department said this week that it has begun sharing evidence relevant to the case with the Trump legal team. The Justice Department said Trump's lawyers do not object to pushing the trial date back.

Zambia seals $6.3 billion debt restructuring deal
  + stars: | 2023-06-22 | by ( Leigh Thomas | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
"We have reached an agreement on the outline of a debt treatment, we've reached the end of the negotiation," the French official, who did not wish to be identified, told journalists. Zambia's public sector creditors agreed to reschedule $6.3 billion, including $1.3 billion in arrears, and private sector creditors are expected to do the same on the $6.8 billion owed to them, the official said. The restructuring agreement with official creditors paves the way for Zambia to receive another $188 million tranche of money from the International Monetary Fund, part of a $1.3 billion package approved in August 2022. The scale of the debt relief Zambia requires has been a concern for some of the country's main creditors. Of the $6.3 billion in debt owed to government bodies, $4.1 billion was owed specifically to Export-Import Bank of China, the French official said.

Editor’s Note: Laura Schifter is a senior fellow with the Aspen Institute and leads This Is Planet Ed, the institute’s initiative on climate change information. We won’t know for sure what it will be or where, but we can predict that these extreme weather events are becoming more common. Katharine Hayhoe, a leading climate scientist suggests one of the most important things we can do about climate change: talk about it. My second grader added, “And we can get power from the sun, compost and walk instead of drive!” We haven’t thought about this as a singular “climate change talk,” but rather as part of how we talk — how we try to help them make sense of the world. For all our kids, it’s time we prioritize their future and help ensure they can thrive in a changing climate.

I'm prone to kidney stones, and I'm very conscious of the ongoing risk of COVID-19. There are also a few other reasons why I'm investing in travel insurance this summer. Some travel insurance plans cover travel delays, which will guarantee the funds from my canceled flights will go back into my bank account. Not all countries accept US health insurance, so travel insurance will give me the flexibility to get the health support I need without additional costs. Travel insurance gives me the confidence to book a trip, even if I might have to cancel it at the last minute.

Afterward, he was to have been the first sitting U.S. president to visit Papua New Guinea. In Sydney, Biden had planned to attend a meeting of the four so-called Quad nations - the United States, Japan, Australia and India. White House spokesperson John Kirby said Biden would be able to meet Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while in Hiroshima. Albanese said in a statement that Biden had apologized for not being able to visit Australia and that they would work to reschedule his visit at the earliest opportunity. “I'm sure the White House will find ways to make this up to partners in the short term.
SYDNEY, May 17 (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday a Quad summit could still go ahead as scheduled in Sydney next week without U.S. President Joe Biden, who postponed his trip to Australia due to debt ceiling negotiations in Washington. The leaders had agreed to work to reschedule Biden's visit to Australia "at the earliest opportunity", he added. Albanese said he hoped the Quad summit could go ahead as planned on May 24 with the United States sending a "senior representative" to attend. It was also possible they would meet together with Biden on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Japan this week, he said. Albanese said he was certain Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would travel to Australia next week as planned for a bilateral meeting and an event on Tuesday with the Indian diaspora in Sydney.

The US Department of Transportation confirmed to CNN that it had issued an order permitting Chinese airlines to increase their number of weekly round-trip flights to 12. That’s up from the eight weekly round-trip flights currently allowed for Chinese carriers. Currently, three US airlines American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Airlines (UAL) fly routes between the two countries. Chinese operators Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines also serve the two markets. Chinese carriers have not been subject to the restrictions, as the relationship between Moscow and Beijing remains intact, leading to calls in the United States and Britain for bans on Chinese flights that use Russian airspace.
BERLIN, May 3 (Reuters) - U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said on Wednesday China has invited him to visit "in the near term" for talks on averting a global climate change crisis even as diplomatic relations between the world's two biggest greenhouse gas emitters remain tense. The United States and China must work together to address climate change, Kerry said in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of a conference on global warming in Berlin. China, for example, first must issue its plan to reduce methane emissions and advance in the transition away from coal, Kerry added. "We're not pointing fingers and we're not out there trying to, you know, make this part of the other issues that are out there" between the United States and China, Kerry added. "This (climate change) is a free-standing issue which affects China as it affects the United States."

May 1 (Reuters) - Chile's president Gabriel Boric criticised violence in stadiums after the derby between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Catolica was suspended on Sunday due to disorder, fireworks and noise bombs in the stands of the Estadio Municipal Ester Roa Rebolledo in Concepcion. The National Professional Football Association (ANFP) said they will reschedule the match without spectators, as they will also request a meeting with the President to work against violence. The governing body will also call an urgent meeting of Chilean football to speed up the work of security in order to toughen the penalties and punishments for violence in stadiums. Boric has condemned violence in stadiums before. He addressed the issue in relation to the serious incidents involving Colo Colo and Universidad Catolica supporters at last year's Copa Libertadores matches.

To the Editor:Re “As a Doctor, I Know Being Ready to Die Is an Illusion,” by Dr. Sunita Puri (Opinion guest essay, April 2):Many doctors, including me, have faced Dr. Puri’s dilemma about how to talk to dying patients. My early years as a specialist were besmirched by my failure to inform patients, in a timely fashion, that they were dying. Used to playing the role of a problem solver, I had no skills in consoling an explosion of grief. Indeed, several courts have found doctors at fault for nondisclosure of proximate death. Research has shown that the vast majority of people surveyed would want their doctor to inform them, without prompting, if they were dying.

[1/4] Junior doctors hold placards during a strike, amid a dispute with the government over pay, outside St Thomas' Hospital, in London, Britain April 11, 2023. REUTERS/Maja SmiejkowskaLONDON, April 11 (Reuters) - Junior doctors in Britain began a four-day strike on Tuesday over pay that is likely to cause unprecedented disruption to the health service, prompting the government to warn of a risk to patient safety. Tuesday's walkout followed a three-day doctors' strike last month. The BMA has said the strikes by junior doctors, some of whom are very experienced, could be stopped if health minister Steve Barclay put a credible pay offer forward. He says the BMA's demands are unreasonable and would mean an increase of more then 20,000 pounds ($24,840) for some doctors.
