The proposal is part of feedback to the European Commission which launched a consultation into the issue in February. The document, which was reviewed by Reuters and has not been published, was compiled by lobbying groups GSMA and ETNO. Telecom operators have lobbied for years for leading technology companies to contribute to funding 5G and broadband roll-out, saying that they use a huge part of the region's internet traffic. Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google, Apple (AAPL.O), Meta (META.O), Netflix , Amazon (AMZN.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O) account for more than half of data internet traffic.
May 16 (Reuters) - WeWork Inc (WE.N) on Tuesday said that Sandeep Mathrani would step down as the workspace provider's chief executive officer, effective May 26, while Sycamore Partners named him as a director to lead its real estate activity. Mathrani was named WeWork CEO in 2020 and tasked with the company's turnaround following a botched IPO attempt and amid rising investor concerns over corporate governance standards. The company, which said Mathrani's resignation was not a result of any disagreement, named board member David Tolley as interim CEO. WeWork said lead independent director Daniel Hurwitz would serve as chairman of the board and head a special committee that will search for a permanent CEO. WeWork shares have fallen about 76% so far this year, resulting in a market capitalization of $745.42 million, according to Refinitiv data.

May 9 (Reuters) - Duke Energy Corp (DUK.N) on Tuesday missed Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit, as the gas and electric utilities firm was hit by unfavorable weather, higher interest expenses, and lower volumes. Warmer-than-normal weather in the states serviced by the company weighed on customers' electricity needs for heating in colder months. Duke's electric utilities, which serve 8.2 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, saw income fall about 12% to $791 million from last year. Meanwhile for its gas utilities, which serve 1.6 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky, income rose about 13% to $287 million for the quarter, aided by better retail margins. Duke said it earned $1.20 per share, on an adjusted basis, in the January-March quarter.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) shares slipped 1.1% in premarket trading as the company signaled its cloud growth would slow further, overshadowing its better-than-expected quarterly results. The weak updates followed stronger-than-expected earnings from big technology and growth companies this week including Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) which led analysts to improve first-quarter profit estimates for S&P 500 companies. The main U.S. indexes ended up sharply on Thursday, with the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) logging its biggest one-day percentage gain since early January. Analysts expect first-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to fall 2.4% year-over-year compared with a forecast for a 5.1% fall at the start of April. April 25 (Reuters) - OpenAI is introducing what one employee called an "incognito mode" for its hit chatbot ChatGPT that does not save users’ conversation history or use it to improve its artificial intelligence, the company said Tuesday. The San Francisco-based startup also said it planned a "ChatGPT Business" subscription with additional data controls. The move comes as scrutiny has grown over how ChatGPT and other chatbots it inspired manage hundreds of millions of users’ data, commonly used to improve, or "train", AI. Italy last month banned ChatGPT for possible privacy violations, saying OpenAI could resume the service if it met demands such as giving consumers tools to object to the processing of their data. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), which has invested in OpenAI, already offers ChatGPT to businesses.

Some in-person clinics in New York, California and Kansas will offer mifepristone for now, but are preparing to provide an alternative abortion pill if a subsequent decision essentially bans the drug. U.S. abortion pill providers are scrambling to make backup plans as the Supreme Court decides whether to keep restrictions on the key drug mifepristone. Those restrictions will limit access to mifepristone even in states where abortion is legal. Some in-person abortion clinics in states where the procedure is legal told CNBC that operations will remain largely the same. The six new offerings of U.S. and international stock funds and a short-term bond fund from Calvert, part of Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM), is built with ESG considerations in mind. The last three quarters of 2022 were very difficult," said Anthony Rochte, global head of ETFs at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. While the number of ESG funds is growing rapidly, Calvert distinguishes itself by conducting its own ESG scoring rather than relying on an index provider's system, Rochte said. And it goes back to the differentiation and the active process they employ in designing the Calvert principles," Rochte said. Over time, Morgan Stanley will look at launching ETFs beyond the Calvert brand, Rochte said.
