More than 90% of employees have at least one colleague who annoys them, according to a 2022 survey by Quality Logo Products. But despite how pervasive pesky co-workers can be, there isn't a rule-of-thumb for how to deal with them. Daniel Goleman is psychologist and author of the 1995 bestselling book "Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ." He says that handling an annoying co-worker has less to do with how you treat them and more to do with how you prepare yourself. "A hidden key here is self-awareness and self-management," he says.

CNN —Disgraced R&B singer and convicted sex trafficker R. Kelly has been transferred to a federal prison in North Carolina. R. Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was moved to FCI Butner Medium I, a “medium security federal correctional institution,” according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. The Butner complex sits north of the Raleigh-Durham area and includes two medium security facilities, a low-security facility and a medical facility. He was already serving a 30-year sentence on racketeering and sex trafficking charges after being convicted in New York in September 2021. “Numerous seated jurors were either familiar with accusations that Defendant had a history of sexually abusing underage girls, had previously faced legal problems, and/or had seen the highly unflattering docuseries, Surviving R. Kelly, in which several government witnesses had appeared,” a brief filed last Wednesday said.

CNN —Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly is appealing one of his two federal convictions – his September 2021 guilty verdicts on sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York – and is seeking a reversal of that conviction or a new trial, court documents show. In a brief filed Wednesday, the singer’s attorneys argue at least four seated jurors in the New York case were already familiar with the sex trafficking accusations raised against R. Kelly prior to trial, with some having seen a documentary series about him. R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a New York federal court after a jury convicted him of nine counts, including one charge of racketeering and eight counts of violations of the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law. His attorneys allege the prosecution failed to show there was a “collective of individuals who shared any common purpose other than to promote” R. Kelly’s music. The singer’s attorneys are also seeking to vacate those orders and return the funds confiscated from his trust account.
I always wanted the dividend and then waited a few days to sell because the stock price always seemed to go down after the ex-date. — Richard F. We don't concern ourselves too much with trading around an ex-dividend date because it, technically, doesn't matter. The ex-dividend date is when the value of the next dividend payment is extracted from the stock price. Based purely on the stock price move that is correct. Ultimately, the value of your position, when excluding the daily fluctuation of a stock price, is the same.

Big banks poured $30 billion into First Republic in the midst of the banking crisis in an effort to shore up the wider market. And what about those pesky shadow banks? Never one to miss a good opportunity, shadow lenders are looking to step up where big banks are stepping back, Bloomberg reported.

CNN —As the Supreme Court prepares for yet another controversial abortion case to come its way, the justices will pore over District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s ruling last week to block the government’s approval of the key medication abortion drug at issue. “There are serious questions on whether the Supreme Court is willing to endorse the district’s court’s very broad approach to those questions,” he said. As he often does, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote separately last June to explain his thinking in voting to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court might also take issue with the relief that Kacsmaryk ordered. None other than the liberals on the Supreme Court who dissented in Dobbs.
By virtue of his social standing and the crimes of which he is accused, Defendant Trump is already getting the privileged process and kid gloves extended to white-collar defendants. It’s not that we should treat white-collar defendants worse, but many other defendants better. White-collar defendants routinely argue that the stigma they may face, as prominent members of society, ought to affect the treatment they receive. This is a rounding error compared to the $426 billion to $1.7 trillion estimated to be the annual cost of white-collar crime. Even if no blood is shed in a misdemeanor white-collar crime, it can come with a profound social cost.

The other kind of search — "exploratory search" — is the hard one. That's where you don't know what you don't know. When you're scrolling through the links in a Google search, looking for "esoteric shit," as one search expert calls it, you see some pages that just look dodgy, maybe in ways you can't even totally articulate. But search chatbots can fake all that. Google's search pages already aren't fully trustworthy — they overindex YouTube video results, for example, because YouTube is a subsidiary of Google.

With markets sagging and deals drawing opposition, such imprimaturs have a value - and at Ritchie Bros Auctioneers (RBA.TO), it’s the turn of Starboard Value’s Jeffrey Smith to play rescuer. Heavy equipment auctioneer Ritchie Bros ran into both problems in its $7 billion bid to buy salvage-car portal IAA (IAA.N). Announced in November, it quickly drew opposition from IAA shareholder Ancora and Ritchie investor Luxor Capital. Shareholder opposition is expected in market turmoil. As part of the deal, Starboard Value agreed to invest $500 million in Ritchie Bros, with fund boss Jeffrey Smith taking a seat on Ritchie’s board if the IAA deal succeeds.
Next week is Groundhog Day, not to mention the 30 th anniversary of the theatrical release of "Groundhog Day." The ensuing market retreat culminated in the October low at more than a 25% decline from the S & P's record high. Inflation is decidedly in retreat, fourth-quarter GDP was slow-ish but solidly positive, Fed officials did nothing to push back against market expectations for a quarter-point bump in rates next week. But none of the interim S & P 500 rallies in that period made it as far above the 200-day moving average as the index currently is. Yet even with obligatory macro scares and market switchbacks along the way, it doesn't mean investors necessarily remain stuck in the same old doom loop.
Why do people buy crackpot conspiracy theories?
  + stars: | 2023-01-26 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +13 min
When it comes to the spread of cockamamie conspiracy theories, Twitter was a maximum viable product long before Elon Musk paid $44 billion for the keys. The more you think you're right all the time, a new study suggests, the more likely you are to buy conspiracy theories, regardless of the evidence. It'd be better, or at least more reassuring, if conspiracy theories were fueled by dumb yahoos rather than self-centered monsters. Still, most scientists thought conspiracy theories weren't worth their time, the province of weirdos connecting JFK's death to lizard aliens. Pennycook's findings also suggest an explanation for why conspiracy theories have become so widely accepted.
Most people are familiar with the scourge of the résumé gap. Young entrants to the workforce are leading a new conversation about the workplace, and the long-scorned résumé gap is no exception. Instead of viewing it as a negative, many Gen Zers are arguing that career breaks are positive and forcing employers to reconsider their preconceived notions about the résumé gap. The pesky résumé gapWhile job candidates have papered over résumé gaps for years, taking a break during the long march of a career is not uncommon. For those looking at working well into their 70s, a career gap, or two, simply makes sense.
Though in far different fields, men like Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Johnny Depp and Sam Bankman-Fried will forever be linked by this ignominious characteristic. Over the past 12 interminable months, America has witnessed the rantings of Hitler-loving Ye; Musk’s edgelord trolling on his new plaything, Twitter; Depp and his toxic TikTok fanboys; and Trump being Trump on any given day. While seemingly not vain like Ye or Depp or openly thuggish like Trump and Musk, he nonetheless exhibits traits that point to something sinister behind the “just-a-regular-dude” persona. Trump seems to be losing ground, and Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee finally took down their “Kanye. Musk asked Twitter users whether he should step down as CEO, and they voted “yes.”Unfortunately, until we address roots causes, there will always be another blustering bully, another Trump, another Ye.
How High Will Jumbo CD Rates Go in 2023?

In other words, while today’s jumbo rates are certainly attractive, you don’t need to be a wealthy investor to get the best CD rates available. So whether you’re looking for a jumbo CD or didn’t think you could afford one, here’s what you need to know about jumbo CDs, where rates could go in 2023 and why regular CDs are the way to go. With a regular CD, early withdrawal penalties can range from zero with a no-penalty CD to six months’ interest, with higher penalties for multiyear CD terms. CD rates tend to follow Federal Reserve moves, which explains why CD rates ticked upward after each Fed rate hike in 2022. CD buying strategiesTo find the best CD rates, you’ll want to look beyond jumbos and rate shop regular CDs.
The embattled billionaire, perhaps seeking to distract from the chaos he has wrought at his social media company, is making grossly misleading claims about Twitter and the FBI. In a tweet Tuesday, Musk wrote, “Government paid Twitter millions of dollars to censor info from the public.” As supposed proof, Musk shared the latest installment of the so-called “Twitter Files” published the day before by environmentalist and writer Michael Shellenberger. Musk’s claim has absolutely saturated right-wing media. If you rely on Fox News or talk radio or one of the online outlets that makes up the constellation of right-wing media, you likely believe the biggest scandal since Watergate is unfolding. A sitting Republican congressman even said on Tuesday he was in favor of halting “all funding” for the FBI over the story.
Now he sees bright pink and red algae blooms every year. Dr. Matt DaveyScientists like Maréchal think these algae blooms are getting larger and more frequent as rising global temperatures melt glaciers worldwide. Glacier algae seems to be booming, but scientists have a lot to learnResearcher Matt Davey samples snow algae at Lagoon Island, Antarctica. Ice algae and snow algae are different types of microorganisms, and different fields of study, but they both affect glaciers. A strip of "blood snow" filled with red algae cuts across a dark bloom of purple algae in Greenland.

Research suggests a college degree isn't as much of a requirement as it once was for many jobs. But there's one thing George lacks: a college degree. Beat the bots through keywords — and find a friendly recruiterGeorge, who works at Logan Capital Management in Pennsylvania, could recall only one time when not having a college degree cost her a job. "If you're up against someone with a liberal arts degree, you're more likely to progress because you know how to sell," he said.
