Malaysia Installs Sultan Ibrahim of Johor State as New King
  + stars: | 2024-01-30 | by ( Jan. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +1 min
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's Sultan Ibrahim from the southern state of Johor was sworn in as the country's new king on Wednesday, taking the oath of office in a ceremony at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur. The monarchy plays a mostly ceremonial role in Malaysia, but its influence has grown in recent years, prompting the king to wield rarely-used discretionary powers to quell political instability. Sultan Ibrahim, 65, succeeds Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is returning to lead his home state of Pahang after completing his five-year tenure as king. While the monarchy is largely seen as above politics, Sultan Ibrahim has been noted for his forthrightness and outsized personality, often weighing in on the country's political issues. Known for his large collection of luxury cars and motorbikes, Sultan Ibrahim has wide-ranging business interests from real estate to mining, including a stake in Forest City - a $100-billion China-backed land reclamation and development project off Johor.

AdvertisementI've never been a light packer, and also find it overwhelming to put together outfits while on my vacation. Earlier this month, I took a three-stop trip through Italy, starting in Rome, traveling through Florence, and finishing in Venice. I previously wrote about building a French-inspired capsule wardrobe and it got me thinking about building a capsule wardrobe that also fits in my hand luggage. The preparationThe stylist and author put together a mood board to set the tone of the capsule wardrobe. I packed less than I usually do and created 12 outfitsThe author was shocked at how small tweaks could make her outfits look completely unique.

The time-consuming baked-potato recipe from celebrity chef Guy Fieri is worth the wait. AdvertisementWhile the potatoes baked, I whipped up a horseradish sour creamThe topping was very easy to make. Paige BennettFieri serves the potatoes with a quick horseradish sour cream, which consists of horseradish (I used store-bought), sour cream, salt, and black pepper. AdvertisementI topped the spud with a generous amount of the horseradish sour cream and quickly devoured it. But I enjoyed a few bites of it paired with the horseradish sour cream, which balanced out all the salt.

The U.S. military said on Sunday that it had declared two Navy SEALs dead after they went missing 10 days ago during an operation at sea to intercept weapons from Iran headed to Houthi fighters. They are among the first known U.S. fatalities in Washington’s campaign against the Houthis, who have launched dozens of attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November, roiling the global shipping industry. The episode involving the SEALs occurred in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Somalia on Jan. 11. During that nighttime commando mission, according to the U.S. military, American troops boarded a small boat, called a dhow, and seized weapons including Iranian made ballistic-missile and cruise-missile components bound for Yemen. The mission led to the first seizure by U.S. forces of Iran-supplied weapons since the Houthis started attacking ships in the Red Sea, the U.S. military said in a statement last week.

American forces have at times mounted retaliations, but in limited fashion to avoid instigating a full-fledged conflict. They privately say they may have no choice, however, if American troops are killed. “They don’t want to strike Iran directly for fear of escalation, which only widens the margin for pro-Iranian groups, including the Houthis, to strike at U.S. forces. On Sunday, U.S. Central Command said that the SEALs had died and it had ended its search. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dropped out of the GOP presidential race on Sunday. The one-time rival to Trump used a purported Winston Churchill quote in his announcement video. According to the International Churchill Society, the quote is fake. Ron DeSantis ended his 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday and endorsed former President Donald Trump. Much like his disappointing campaign itself, arguably one of the worst in history, DeSantis' video announcing the suspension missed the mark by including an apparently fake Winston Churchill quote.

“Chip War” is a reminder of the physical artifacts that underlie what we so wrongly describe as the cloud. The title of Miller’s book is, for now, rhetorical, but I found myself wondering how long that would remain the case. There are more histories of this era of American politics than any bookshelf can hold. The apogee of America’s welfare state, with all its limitations, was coterminous with the height of the Cold War. But I believe a new one has already begun, and it is being shaped more by China than by any American politician, including Trump or Biden.

Few investors are more emblematic of the no-interest-rate private market frenzy than billionaire Scott Shleifer. Tiger's venture approach in 2020 and 2021 — constantly described as unsustainable by rivals — included maneuvers such as offering start-ups more money than they were asking and emailing founders term sheets after a single meeting. Shleifer's reputation and personal wealth grew with Tiger's venture success. As Tiger was fundraising late last year, investors learned of a $10 million settlement Tiger Global made to a former female employee. At least one Tiger investor was surprised to hear about it from Coleman and not Shleifer himself.

Sandu warned before the election that pro-Russian forces in the country, particularly fugitive business magnate Ilan Shor, had funnelled money into Moldova to "buy" voters. In her first year at Amazon .com, Beryl Tomay made a software code change for Amazon’s order-confirmation page that caused it to appear blank for customers for over an hour. Later on, she made a change to the database of the Kindle e-reader that prevented users from signing in or downloading anything. That error was so large that Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder, noticed and emailed to ask about the problem. Today, Tomay is in charge of a crucial part of Amazon that is in its busiest period right now: She oversees businesses and technology at the company’s “last mile” delivery unit—the logistics business that gets packages through the final steps on their way to customers’ doorsteps. It’s a chokepoint that will help determine whether Amazon is successful during the make-or-break holiday season.

Karen Davis, an animal-rights activist who led campaigns to recognize the dignity of chickens, turkeys and other farmyard fowl — and whose fervor was such that she compared the industrial slaughter of poultry to the Holocaust — died on Nov. 4 at her sanctuary for rescued chickens in Machipongo, Va. She was 79. United Poultry Concerns, the advocacy group Ms. Davis founded and led, announced that she died “surrounded by her beloved birds,” but did not cite a cause. The animal rights movement was well established when Ms. Davis became an activist in the 1980s. “In our culture, fowl is ignored by the animal protectionist community,” Ms. Davis said at a candlelight vigil in 1992 at a farm in Virginia where customers could reserve a Thanksgiving turkey. “We’re talking about a universe of pain and suffering that far exceeds virtually all other animals combined.”

CNN —A British couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday at a luxury resort in Egypt after the room next door was sprayed with pesticide to kill bed bugs, a coroner has found. In some countries, Lambda is diluted with the substance dichloromethane, which causes the body to metabolize or ingest carbon monoxide. The fumigated room, which was sealed with masking tape around the door, was connected to theirs with an adjoining door, according to PA. NEW YORK (AP) — Citigroup intentionally discriminated against Armenian Americans when they applied for credit cards, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Wednesday. The bureau said some bank employees argued internally that Armenian Americans were more likely to commit fraud and referred to applicants as “bad guys” or as affiliated with organized crime. As part of the order, Citi will pay $24.5 million in fines as well as $1.4 million in remedies to impacted customers. However, in the bureau's order, these Citi employees used identifiable information that broadly discriminated against Armenian Americans in general.
