One after another, for four days, the testimonies for Donald J. Trump poured out. “God spared his life,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, proclaimed. “Divine intervention” saved his father from the assassin’s bullet, Eric Trump said. Ben Carson, the former secretary of housing and urban development, said that when he saw his friend “escape death by mere inches” his thoughts “immediately turned to the book of Isaiah, which says, ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper.’”And Mr. Trump himself said at the Republican National Convention, “I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”As many in the audience nodded and cried in the darkness, the message was unmistakable. Even as his speech was criticized by many for its divisive tone and length, for these believers, Mr. Trump appears supernaturally anointed, an embodiment of God’s blessing.

Usually, after a financial crisis, people spend less money and fewer new businesses launch. Welcome to the age of the side hustle, where Americans are increasingly devoted to finding extra money to spend. Here's why so many people have side hustles right now, and why economists say they're probably here to stay. For roughly half of Americans with side hustles, the extra money isn't for fun: It's a necessity, driven by financial uncertainty. $250 per month is "by no means enough to live on, [but] it's a nice amount of money," Rossman says.

Supply and DemandThe case for housing deregulation starts with Econ 101: Allowing builders to significantly increase housing supply leads to much lower prices. It isn’t rising demand, as the U.S. population rose even faster back when housing prices were roughly stable. Standard of LivingWhat would happen if homebuilders could once again freely build until housing prices were driven back down to cost? The admittedly small number of studies on the link between YIMBY and babies support common sense: Less regulation lowers housing prices, and lower housing prices generally raise birth rates and hasten child-bearing. In a rational world, the panacea policy of housing deregulation would be a done deal.

Why CPI shelter inflation has fallen slowlyThe pullback in shelter inflation has been slower than expected, economists said. How the CPI reflects homeownershipThe shelter inflation index is meant to measure the average cost of housing in the U.S. economy, J.P. Morgan's Seydl said. The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. When comparing personal wealth data with homeownership, a curious pattern emerges: Many states with high homeownership rates have lower income levels and vice versa. According to Federal Reserve data, West Virginia’s average personal income of $52,585 per capita is the second-lowest in the US. However, despite its relatively low personal income levels, it has the highest homeownership rate of all 50 states, at 77%, according to US census data. Mississippi—the only state with a lower average personal income than West Virginia—has the third-highest homeownership rate in the country. Even West Virginia, which counts three out of every four housing units in the state as owner-occupied, isn’t insulated, Sansalone said.

However, central bank officials still want to see more progress before cutting interest rates, he noted. “The most recent inflation readings, however, have shown some modest further progress, and more good data would strengthen our confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2%,” he added. Fed officials expect to cut interest rates just once this year, according to their latest economic projections in June, compared to the three cuts they forecast in March. LONDON — Britain's new finance chief on Monday outlined a spate of measures to revitalize the U.K.'s languishing economic growth and address national housing shortages. "I have repeatedly warned that whoever won the general election would inherit the worst set of circumstances since the Second World War. A former Bank of England economist, Reeves was appointed as Britain's first female chancellor of the exchequer — equivalent to a finance minister — on Friday, when newly-invested Prime Minister Keir Starmer named his first cabinet. Ahead of her first speech, she championed economic growth as both a party priority and the "national mission." Housing and planning were center stage in Reeves' Monday speech:"First, we will reform the national planning policy framework, consulting on a new growth-focused approach to the planning system before the end of the month.

Expats living in the U.S. say the best part of living here is having plenty of career opportunities, but for many, a high cost of living makes it a challenging experience. The U.S. stands out for its local job market and career prospects for expats, according to survey respondents. Expats working full time in the U.S. say they work an average of 43.7 hours per week, versus the 42.5 hours global average. Outside of work, about half, 52%, of expats in the states say they're dissatisfied with the overall cost of living, compared with 39% of expats who feel similarly around the world. Rents have soared in recent years because of housing shortages across much of the country and a bout of severe inflation. But a growing number of rental properties, especially in the South and the Southwest, are in financial distress. In many parts of the country, rents are starting to fall. Interest rates, ratcheted higher by the Federal Reserve to combat inflation, have made mortgages much more expensive for building owners. These problems haven’t yet turned into a crisis, because most owners of apartment buildings, known in the real estate industry as multifamily properties, haven’t fallen behind on loan payments.

Like the American federal government, Canada's national government doesn't have a lot of control over housing policy. Related storiesOverall, the federal push has already been quite successful in changing the housing policy landscape across the country, Moffat said. Over the last several years, an influx of new immigrants, rampant investor speculation, and rapidly rising construction costs have also sent prices up. It would also impose a fine on cities that tolerate "NIMBY" — the anti-development "Not in My Backyard" philosophy — opposition to housing construction. Some American fans of Canada's Housing Accelerator Fund suggest it could be a model for US efforts to incentivize denser and more abundant housing construction.
