Amanda McDaniel, a member of the preservation alliance, is rooting for Jordan’s speaker bid — seeing in him the same principles she holds. It is not an approach that builds consensus — a previous Republican speaker to brand him a “legislative terrorist” — even as he has steadily parlayed it into political success. Mr. Jordan embraced right-wing populism long before the Tea Party or Donald Trump made into a national force. Eric Forson, 50, said that when he wrote to his elected representatives during the 2013 government shutdown, Mr. Jordan was the only one who responded. Ms. Esch and her husband, Mike, 57 were both hopeful that Mr. Jordan would drum up the votes needed to take the speaker role on Wednesday.

She also ruled that a license must come from federal environmental agency IBAMA and not state agency IPAAM. Brazil Potash on Wednesday declined to comment on the ruling, which was based on an appeal by the state environmental agency IPAAM. Brazil Potash says it would have minor environmental impact because salt separated from the potash at a processing plant would be returned underground.

They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York. UAW President Shawn Fain countered in a statement that the automakers were using layoffs to pressure the union into settling the strike. Once metal stamping factories that supply multiple assembly plants have produced enough parts for non-striking facilities, the companies would likely shut them down.

Messi still in doubt for Paraguay qualifier, says Scaloni

Oct 11 (Reuters) - Argentina captain Lionel Messi is still a doubt for the World Cup qualifier against Paraguay, coach Lionel Scaloni said on Wednesday. Messi was included in the world champions' squad despite being sidelined by the muscle problem he sustained month which has kept him out of action for his U.S. side Inter Miami. Scaloni said the 36-year-old forward had been training well ahead of the match on Thursday. "We know that they are important absentees but those who come (to replace them) are very capable and can even stay," Scaloni added. CNN —A floating village now lies stranded on a lakebed in Brazil’s Amazon as severe drought leaves communities struggling to access food, fresh water and fuel. Lake Puraquequara is part of the Rio Negro river system, which has been near record-low since the end of September, according to the state’s civil defense authority. “There are many people already having difficulty accessing food, food security, drinking water and other important inputs,” he said in a statement at the time. REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSAO PAULO, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Brazilian auto exports are set to plunge by double digits in 2023 when compared with the previous year, automaker association Anfavea said on Friday, as a severe economic crisis in neighboring Argentina hits shipments to that country. "Exports have been the major warning point for the automotive sector in the first nine months of the year," it said. According to Anfavea, the crisis in Argentina caused the country - which has in Brazil its largest trade partner - to lose its position as the No.1 destination of Brazilian auto exports to Mexico this year. In the first nine months of 2022, Anfavea said, auto exports from Brazil have already declined 11.2% from the same period a year ago.

A widely-shared video of a man being robbed and stabbed at a bus station was filmed in Brazil last year not, as is being falsely reported online, in England. The graphic clip, uploaded to Facebook, shows a man at a ticket machine being grabbed from behind and his bag being stolen by two men. The attackers then run away and the man falls over a ticket barrier onto the floor. The man wounded in the attack was named in reports as Pablo Felipe Lima Bernardo. As Lake Puraquequara dried up, so too has business evaporated for the owners of boats and floating shops that are also stuck in the mud. The Amazon drought, like flooding in the south of Brazil, is a result of the El Niño phenomenon, which warms the Pacific Ocean's surface water, experts say. Former President Donald Trump on Friday endorsed Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives. Trump's endorsement of his close ally Jordan in a social media post came three days after the House voted to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as speaker. Trump wrote that Jordan "will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!" "He is STRONG on Crime, Borders, our Military/Vets, & 2nd Amendment," Trump wrote early Friday on his Truth Social site. New York CNN —General Motors and Ford are laying off 500 additional workers between them, blaming the expansion of the strike announced by the United Auto Workers union at those companies on Friday. General Motors said it was laying off 164 workers at stamping plants in Parma, Ohio, and Marion, Indiana. Ford said it laid off 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant following the union’s decision Friday to strike its Chicago Assembly plant, which made the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. It had previously laid off 600 hourly workers at the Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan who were not on strike. Those benefits for both strikers and laid-off UAW members will cost the union about $14.3 million a week, but it went into the strike with $825 million in its strike fund.

SAO PAULO (AP) — More than 100 dolphins have died in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest in the past week as the region grapples with a severe drought, and many more could die soon if water temperatures remain high, experts say. Experts believe high water temperatures are the most likely cause of the deaths in the lakes in the region. Temperatures since last week have exceeded 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Tefe Lake region. There had been some 1,400 river dolphins in Tefe Lake, said Miriam Marmontel, a researcher from the Mamiraua Institute. Oct 1 (Reuters) - Annual inflation in Peru decelerated to 5.04% in September to hit its lowest level in more than two years, according to official figures published on Sunday, though consumer prices remained some way above the central bank's target rate. Data from national statistics agency INEI showed the key index based on the metropolitan region of Lima slowed to its lowest level since August 2021, when it stood at 4.95%. On a month-to-month basis the Lima Consumer Price Index, Peru's inflation benchmark, inched up 0.02% in September, well below the 0.38% increase in August. The figures are a boost to Peru's bid to wrestle inflation back to the central bank's official target of 2%, plus or minus one percentage point. LIMA, Peru (AP) — Some archaeologists describe Peru’s capital as an onion with many layers of history, others consider it a box of surprises. That's what some gas line workers got when their digging uncovered eight pre-Inca funeral bales. The city also has more than 400 larger archaeological sites that have turned up scattered through the urban landscape. The company’s archaeologists believe the finds belong to the pre-Inca culture called Ichma. The eight burial bundles were found near some braised chicken restaurants and a road that leads to Peru’s only nuclear power station.
