  + stars: | 2024-07-16 | by ( Sara Bonisteel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As The New York Times’s restaurant critic for the last dozen years, Pete Wells has reported from the dining-room trenches on a changing industry. Pete has explored the five boroughs and far beyond, as the Food desk’s coverage of restaurants widened its scope. He noted the rise in food halls in New York, and the city’s vast wealth of Chinese restaurants. (If you’re curious about his process, listen to him on this episode of “The Daily” and learn why he always packs a notebook.) Wong, ★★, 2012His first column as restaurant critic took him to an Asian fusion restaurant from the chef Simpson Wong, where the duck-fat ice cream and duck-tongue meatballs brought smiles of pleasant surprise.

The prices were still a bit tough to swallowI'd been intimidated by the Chez L'Ami Louis prices before. I wish I'd saved more room for dessertThe chocolate cake at Chez L'Ami Louis was creamy and decadent. But as for me, I'd definitely recommend Chez L'Ami Louis to those looking for an authentic French bistro experience.

CNN —Writings on an ancient clay tablet have allowed experts to reconstruct a Bronze Age ship made of reeds and sail it on a maiden voyage off the coast of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is the world’s largest reconstruction of a Bronze Age Magan boat, according to the team. The research project’s goals were to uncover ancient craftsmanship techniques, determine the connections between Bronze Age societies and better understand the role Abu Dhabi once played in Bronze Age trade. After passing five days of trials, the ship sailed toward Saadiyat Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi and the open sea on March 2 and 3. “Seeing the Magan Boat sail on the water for the first time actually took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes.”

Smoking was the leading risk factor by far, the study found, contributing to nearly 1 in 5 cancer cases and nearly a third of cancer deaths. Other key risk factors included excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diet and infections such as HPV. Overall, researchers analyzed 18 modifiable risk factors across 30 types of cancer. In 2019, these lifestyle factors were linked to more than 700,000 new cancer cases and more than 262,000 deaths, the study found. But modifiable risk factors contributed to more than half of new cases for 19 of the 30 types of cancer evaluated.

Since September, when Fraser laid out her vision for a more streamlined Citigroup, the bank’s stock has shot up more than 50%. For the first time in nearly two decades, Wall Street appears to be feeling something almost like optimism about America’s third-largest bank. But speaking of Fraser’s tenure, Mayo sounded unusually sanguine about her progress in simplifying Citi’s notoriously labyrinthine corporate structure. Still, Mayo said the bank offers the “worst-in-class efficiency, returns and stock market valuation.”“I think she will pull it off. Of course, Fraser, who took over in March 2021, is still being haunted by the sins of Citi’s past.

I'm always on the lookout for stocks with ideal technical set-ups, and my favorite one is a chart with a long-term uptrend and short-term pullback. I actually call this setup a "fat pitch" chart. So when a chart is in a primary uptrend, and then has a decent pullback to make a higher low, this fat pitch chart can often provide a fantastic "buy on the dips" opportunity. We can also see that the RSI is currently just above the 40 level, which tells us that the price momentum remains fairly bullish despite the recent price pullback. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

CNN —Buried deep in an Australian cave, archaeologists have uncovered evidence that an Aboriginal ritual may have been passed down 500 generations and survived 12,000 years, making it the oldest known continuous cultural practice in the world, according to a new study. They cut it, and used carbon dating to determine it’s 12,000 years old, from towards the end of the last Ice Age. Normally they just disintegrate.”They also uncovered another wooden stick which, though 1,000 years younger, was remarkably similar. You’ll also have to contend with a haze of aggressive marketing — words like “low fat,” “gluten-free,” “paleo,” “keto-friendly” and “a good source of fiber” — that doesn’t answer the fundamental question: Is this food good for me? An orange is a simple enough choice, but a frozen dinner? There is little reliable guidance available for people who don’t have the time, patience or skill to analyze the dense nutrition labels on food packaging. What could help is a system giving consumers important nutrition information at a glance on the front of a package: a warning sign that a high-sugar soda or breakfast cereal product, for example, is an unhealthy choice. The bold move here would be to steer people away from food that’s bad for them.
