CNN —For weeks, the White House press corps has been boiling – and not from the Washington, DC, heat. Some feel the White House misled the press before President Joe Biden’s stumbling performance at last month’s CNN presidential debate. “I think this is a credibility crisis writ large for the White House, and certainly as a spokesperson for the White House, this is a credibility crisis for her,” one White House reporter told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the situation. “We are in the midst of a full-blown feeding frenzy,” former CNN White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno said. Sesno and former White House correspondents and officials told CNN that questions surrounding Biden’s age and performance, along with how the White House is handling the issue, are legitimate and warrant scrutiny.

At his rehabilitation medicine practice in Illinois, Dr. Azlan Tariq typically spent seven hours a week fighting with insurance companies reluctant to pay for his patients’ treatments. He often lost. There was the 45-year-old man who spent five months in a wheelchair while his insurer denied appeal after appeal for a prosthetic leg. Or the stroke survivor who was rehospitalized following a fall after his insurer determined his rehab “could be done at home.”Over the course of Dr. Tariq’s 12-year career, these stories had become more common: The list of treatments that needed pre-approval from insurers seemed ever broadening, and the denials seemed ever rising. So in an effort to spare his patients what he deemed subpar care, and himself mountains of paperwork, Dr. Tariq recently turned to an unlikely tool: generative A.I.

Financial markets are slowly starting to absorb the possibility that what was once a toss-up presidential election campaign has taken a notable turn. It could help former President Donald Trump's hush-money conviction survive the US Supreme Court immunity opinion. Trump's lawyers are about to file what's known as a 330.30 motion to set aside the verdict. The Supreme Court presidential immunity opinion bars official-act evidence. US Supreme Court/BITrump's lawyers now say there were at least four times that the judge improperly let Manhattan prosecutors show official-act evidence to the jury. Trump's hush-money conviction appeal will take years and could even lead back to the US Supreme Court.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in Ukraine on Tuesday for his first wartime visit to the battle-torn country. Orban, meanwhile, communicated Hungary's intentions to improve ties with Ukraine and sign a broad bilateral cooperation agreement, while urging Zelenskyy to consider a quick cease-fire to accelerate peace talks, Reuters reported. Orban absented from last month's Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, where Hungary was instead represented by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. CNN —The number of available jobs in the US unexpectedly grew in May, signaling continued resilience in the nation’s labor market. Job openings jumped higher to 8.14 million in May, from a downwardly revised 7.91 million in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report released Tuesday. While both hires and job openings rates (as a percentage of total employment) ticked higher for May, the quits rate and layoffs rate were unchanged. The labor market appears to be at a crossroads, Nick Bunker, Indeed Hiring Lab’s head of economic research, wrote in commentary posted Tuesday. But some Fed officials have noted that the job market has lost momentum recently and that it’s highly unclear whether it will continue to hold steady or weaken further.

CNN —The biggest question now that the Supreme Court has decided Donald Trump is entitled to some immunity from prosecution: What happens next in special counsel Jack Smith’s election interference case against the former president? Those are likely to come in the days after the Supreme Court hands the opinion down formally to the federal courts in DC. The Supreme Court said that that Trump’s pressure campaign on Vice President Mike Pence to help him overturn the election is “presumptively” immune, and put the burden on the prosecutors to rebut the presumptive immunity. The Supreme Court’s ruling strongly suggests that those appeals would need to be resolved pre-trial, making it unlikely this case goes to a jury before Americans cast their ballots for president. Jack Smith’s options going forwardIt’s also possible that Smith’s office winnows down his case to bring it in line with the Supreme Court’s opinion.

Put another way, this isn’t going to be an “abortion” election or an “economy” election: 2024 is going to be the mom election. That decline is largely attributed to one key cost: child care. Both have since lapsed, leaving many families to teeter on (or fall off) a “child care cliff.”In 2024, the cost of child care — the cost of motherhood — has become untenable. They don’t see “motherhood issues,” such as child care and paid leave, as substantive, economic issues worth fighting for. Lumber prices are down 24% from their mid-March peak amid subdued home-building activity. The combination of oversupply and falling demand for lumber are driving prices down, say industry experts. AdvertisementLumber prices have plunged this year as the peak home-building season falls flat amid subdued demand. Putting added pressure on lumber prices is that the commodity is experiencing a period of oversupply. And falling demand combined with rising supply can be a powerful dynamic that puts downward pressure on prices.
