Let’s do that now, because here’s what I think we’ve been watching:A World Series with possibly eight future Hall of Famers. So no World Series is ever catching the 1932 Series, when an incredible 13 eventual Hall of Famers took the field. How about saying you were there when Freddie Freeman took over a World Series in his own Freddie-esque way? Electric vehicle startup Lucid Group is counting on its upcoming Gravity SUV to assist the automaker in a "significant increase" in sales volumes to narrow the company's losses, according to CEO Peter Rawlinson. The Gravity is Lucid's second vehicle following the Air sedan, which the luxury EV manufacturer has been selling in relatively small numbers since late 2021. Lucid on Tuesday said customer ordering for the first Gravity model, called the Grand Touring, will open Nov. 7 on the carmaker's website. Other models are expected to follow, including an entry-level $79,900 Gravity Touring trim late next year. "We believe there's about a 6-to-1 ratio … for the SUV over sedan, and that's going to put us in a very strong position."

Ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and neighboring Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire early Monday morning, police said, just over a week out from Election Day. The Portland Police Bureau said an "incendiary device" was placed inside of a sidewalk ballot box in the Central City district. At around 4 a.m. local time, about a half-hour after the reported fire in Portland, police in Vancouver also responded to a ballot box fire. Earlier this month, the Vancouver bomb squad responded to reports of a "suspicious device" near a downtown ballot box, police said. The device was "safely removed" and the ballot box itself was "not compromised," according to a news release.

Democrats had warned the new rules around certification could allow local election officials to delay or altogether decline to certify the election results as they searched for purported fraud or irregularities. Key GOP state officials, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, had also opposed the new rules. Republican state officials have launched an emergency appeal in Virginia, while Trump has attempted to play up the ruling for political gain. A Republican lawsuit led to a settlement with Detroit election officials that affirmed that there would be at least one GOP poll watcher in each precinct. But in Wisconsin, a judge rejected a lawsuit there to force election officials to hire more GOP poll workers in Racine.

'Boo Baskets' are Halloween-themed presents that some parents give their kidsAs a parent, I don't want to bring meaningless stuff into our house. On top of that, there's also a growing trend for "Boo Baskets," where parents give kids Halloween-themed gifts and trinkets. As a parent to two young girls, I refuse to hop on the Boo Basket bandwagon. Election officials — and reporters like me — have spent years explaining that voter fraud is incredibly rare. We know that because voting systems are designed with checks and balances to make it pretty hard to cheat. Election officials will then check your information against government databases, which typically verify your identity and citizenship. Checking the countAfter the results are tallied, the state conducts a risk-limiting audit by physically counting randomly selected batches of ballots and hand-counting them. The state also runs all the ballot images through a computer program that tallies the results.

A federal appeals court ruled Friday that a Mississippi law allowing mail-in ballots to be counted if they are postmarked before Election Day — but received up to five days after Election Day — is pre-empted by federal law. It does, however, pave the way for a possible challenge that could go up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which could have ramifications for states that do allow ballots postmarked before Election Day to be counted. The appeals court ruling says that no such ballots should be counted. "Federal law requires voters to take timely steps to vote by Election Day. And federal law does not permit the State of Mississippi to extend the period for voting by one day, five days, or 100 days," the ruling said.

CNN —A panel of three Donald Trump-appointed judges said Friday that Mississippi was violating federal law by counting mail ballots that arrive after Election Day, but stopped short of blocking the policy before the election, in a ruling that could nevertheless impact voting-related lawsuits this fall. The ruling from the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals is a victory for the Republican National Committee and others who brought the case in Mississippi, a non-battleground state with very little mail-in voting, seeking a ruling by a far-right circuit court friendly to their arguments. “Voters deserve nothing less than a fair and transparent election which ends on November 5th. “Congress statutorily designated a singular ‘day for the election’ of members of Congress and the appointment of presidential electors,” the 5th Circuit panel said. “That is not to say all the ballots must be counted on Election Day,” the opinion states.
