Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

CNN —Naomi Pomeroy, renowned chef and “Top Chef Masters” star, died in a tubing accident in Oregon over the weekend, local authorities said. Pomeroy drowned in the Willamette River in Corvallis, Oregon, on Saturday, July 13th, according to a news release posted to Facebook by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). One of the floaters, Naomi, was pulled under the water and held by the paddle board leash,” the sheriff’s release stated. The sheriff’s office has deployed a boat on the river every day since the drowning and plans to continue the search. Pomeroy quickly became renowned after opening her Portland restaurant, Beast, and was recognized in 2014 as the James Beard Best Chef in the Pacific Northwest.

CNN —The Forbidden City was once one of the most powerful places on the planet. It was called the ‘Forbidden City’ because few Chinese subjects were allowed to enter. The Most Memorable Reviews by Pete Wells

As The New York Times’s restaurant critic for the last dozen years, Pete Wells has reported from the dining-room trenches on a changing industry. Pete has explored the five boroughs and far beyond, as the Food desk’s coverage of restaurants widened its scope. He noted the rise in food halls in New York, and the city’s vast wealth of Chinese restaurants. (If you’re curious about his process, listen to him on this episode of “The Daily” and learn why he always packs a notebook.) Wong, ★★, 2012His first column as restaurant critic took him to an Asian fusion restaurant from the chef Simpson Wong, where the duck-fat ice cream and duck-tongue meatballs brought smiles of pleasant surprise.

Around the dinner table in the early 2000s, David Katzman would quiz his kids about their dream startups. ModelFit employees told BI that Gelband used the Pelvicore Pro only with the permission of its creator, the physical therapist Christina Christie. Once, in October 2018, David Katzman met with Facebook's ad team to discuss SDC's before-and-after advertisements, which violated the tech company's policies. SDC employees worked on Pvolve marketing campaigns, and Pvolve employees took trips on David Katzman's jet. "He didn't come from anything, and he spent years and years building up the business," the person close to Pasterino told BI.

It's not an exaggeration to say going back to school changed Erin Vaughan's life. Advertisement"It is truly one of the hardest things I've ever done, but the most rewarding thing," Vaughan told Business Insider. AdvertisementShe's among a growing number of older adults who have decided to return to school later in life to give themselves another shot at higher education. On top of that, a report from Gallup and the Lumina Foundation on the state of higher education in 2024 found that "adults' interest in pursuing some form of higher education is at the highest level" the organizations ever recorded. The high cost of college is also a key factor as to why many Gen Zers have chosen to skip higher education altogether, instead choosing to pursue careers that do not require college degrees.

You get to take time to enjoy the kind of inspiration that being alone in a giant kitchen full of your tools and favorite recipes might bring. On those mornings, I would use my early arrival as a chance to thumb through my cookbooks. Some of these books were by renowned pastry chefs, but a majority were castoffs from rummage sales and “free” bins at the library. They were full of recipes that people once exchanged verbally before eventually typing them up and binding them with plastic spirals. In these volumes, I found inspiration and personal stories — and often scrap papers with handwritten recipes tucked among the pages.
David Liederman, whose confections redefined the chocolate chip cookie and whose chain, David’s Cookies, eventually grew to more than 100 stores nationwide, died on Thursday in Mount Kisco, N.Y., near his home in Katonah. His wife, Susan Liederman, said the cause of his death, at a hospital, was a heart attack. Mr. Liederman’s innovative version of the chocolate chip cookie will keep his name alive. The cookie’s unique feature was that it was not made with standard Toll House chocolate chips but was studded with irregular pieces of dark Swiss Lindt chocolate. Mr. Liederman called his cookies chocolate chunk, a term that has become widely understood and used in the world of baking and confections.

Italian beef is a Chicago staple, and I was excited to try it. Portillo's, Al's, and Buona are some of the most popular chains for Italian beef. Originally, the show follows a chef returning to Chicago to run his family's sandwich shop that sells — you guessed it — Italian beef. I moved to Chicago from Hawaii, so I was curious to try Italian beef. Robert Kirk, a retired jack of many trades, finds himself homeless at the age of 74 after a chain of events that could happen to almost anyone. His landlady in Brooklyn died, the building’s new owner raised the rent and later evicted the tenants, and he could not find another apartment he could afford with his Social Security check. Now his neighbors at a hotel shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn, include a 69-year-old ambulette driver who lost his job and apartment after a leg injury, a 73-year-old former plasterer from Panama and a 78-year-old retired sushi chef from Japan. They are among the swelling ranks of older people who are homeless in New York City. According to a report released on Thursday, the number of single adults ages 65 and older in the city’s main shelter system more than doubled from 2014 to 2022, growing nearly three times as quickly as the number of younger single adults in shelters.
