June 9 (Reuters) - Canada's Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.TO) said on Friday it would buy payments provider Network International (NETW.L) for 2.2 billion pounds ($2.76 billion) in cash, as it expands its payments business in the Middle East and Africa. The Canadian firm said Network directors intended to unanimously recommend that shareholders vote in favour of the deal. Brookfield, which has over $5 billion in assets under management in the Middle East, last year bought a 60% stake in Magnati, the payments business of First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB.AD). The investment firm said the deal would be financed by a combination of equity investment, as part of which Brookfield Business Partners expects to invest up to about $150 million. Network International, whose top investors include Capital Research and Mastercard UK, listed in London in April 2019 at an initial public offering price of 435 pence a share.

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.TO) has won its payments race. The Canadian investment group’s 2.2 billion pound bid for London-listed payments provider Network International (NETW.L) was enough to see off a rival pitch from CVC and Francisco Partners. They’ve also endorsed a plan to merge Dubai-based Network International with domestic peer Magnati, a former unit of FAB. If Network International alone can grow revenues at a 15% annual clip and reach a margin of 44% from the current 41%, EBITDA could hit $388 million by 2028. In its 13 charges, the SEC alleged that Binance and Zhao used Merit Peak and Sigma Chain, another trading firm controlled by Zhao, to commingle corporate funds with client assets and use the monies "as they please." This put customers' assets at risk while Binance sought to "maximize" its profits, the SEC wrote in its civil complaint on Monday. "All user assets on Binance and Binance affiliate platforms, including Binance.US, are safe and secure," it said in a statement on Monday. The funds received by British Virgin Islands-based Merit Peak between 2019 and 2021 flowed from Key Vision Development Ltd, also controlled by Zhao, the SEC filing on Tuesday showed. Reuters reported last month that Key Vision and Merit Peak, along with Binance's Cayman Islands holding company, formed the core of the global crypto exchange's financial network.

The $2.2 billion of U.S. customer assets held by Binance is at "significant risk" of being stolen by founder Changpeng Zhao unless a freezing order is in put place, federal regulators said in a filing Tuesday night, after the crypto regulator was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC sued Binance and Zhao on Monday, alleging they engaged in the unregistered offer and sale of securities and commingled investor funds with their own. Years of communications between the SEC and Binance, which claims no official headquarters, suggest that Binance.US couldn't clearly indicate who controlled customer assets, according to the filing. "Zhao and Binance have had free reign," the SEC alleged, over "customer assets worth billions of dollars." The SEC says federal law and precedent establish the court's jurisdiction over Zhao and Binance.

"Right now, the most important thing is to win a game, and I'm trying to win a game in any possible way," Jokic said on the ABC broadcast. The Nuggets were sharp, even after a nine-day wait between their conference-final sweep and the start of the NBA Finals. "I reminded our group, if they didn't know, that Miami went into Milwaukee (in the first round) and won Game 1," Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said. "They went into the Garden in New York City (in the second round) and won Game 1. "They were in a pretty good rhythm, especially in that first half," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of the Nuggets.

It was a public vote of confidence after a game full of missed opportunities for the Heat. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, their two best players, combined to shoot 9 of 37 from the field. There he was in the second quarter, handling the ball at the top of the perimeter with the shot clock winding down. In the fourth quarter, for example, Adebayo grabbed the rim blocking a shot, which was against the rules and led to a 4-point possession for the Celtics. As a team, the Heat shot 35.5 percent from the field.
Standing on the Corner has also produced tracks by Earl Sweatshirt, Mike, Danny Brown and Solange (with whom Escobar has been frequently photographed). Prepandemic, Standing on the Corner gigs were often announced via same-day Instagram stories and rarely featured the same musicians or even the same configuration — the group might be a 30-plus-member chamber jazz orchestra or a free jazz organ trio. Escobar’s preferred instrument is the organ, though he doesn’t have a formal music academy background. “In a certain sense that’s what makes it better,” said Lopez, himself an in-demand collaborator in New York’s jazz and improvised music community. That’s where music exists.
With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
May 1 (Reuters) - Australia's Origin Energy (ORG.AX) on Monday sharply raised the full-year earnings outlook for its key energy markets division for a second time, helped mainly by a stronger-than-expected contribution from U.K.-based energy retailer Octopus Energy. Origin now expects underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for its energy markets division for fiscal year 2023 to be between A$950 million ($628 million) and A$1,200 million, much higher than the prior range between A$600 million and A$730 million. Origin holds a 20% stake in Octopus Energy, which last year contributed a loss of A$36 million to Origin's EBITDA. Shares of the Sydney-headquartered company were up 0.4% at A$8.38 by 0017 GMT. Both the SEC and the CFTC have taken action against the crypto industry in the last few weeks. He added: "At the end of the day industry participants are searching for regulatory clarity, which has not yet been achieved." "Compliance and regulatory efforts are expensive, but necessary, the personnel will be almost as important as tech people," Yang told Insider. Markets could face more volatility following a crackdown because crypto prices are often sensitive to regulatory news. This, however, would require a widespread effort and coordination between financial regulators, industry participants, and legislators.
