The UAE president’s visit to the US “was mostly and almost exclusively about the future,” Gargash said. One of the US’ closest allies in the Middle East and a major recipient of US arms, it hosts 5,000 US military personnel. Wary of being deprived of US technology, the UAE has since abandoned closer cooperation with China in the field of AI and semiconductors in favor of the US. Earlier this year, Abu Dhabi’s state-backed technology firm G42 announced it had agreed not to engage with Chinese companies for advanced technology. He said the two pillars of the UAE’s policy are stability and prosperity.

New York CNN —OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati — who has been instrumental in the development of ChatGPT and the artificial intelligence image generator Dall-E — said Wednesday she is leaving the company. “My six-and-a-half years with the OpenAI team have been an extraordinary privilege,” Murati said in a note to the OpenAI team, which she posted to X. I work at my clinic 40 hours a week, but I used to spend a lot of my time documenting patient notes outside those hours. AdvertisementLast fall, I started using Suki AI, an AI-powered voice assistant, to help me make notes from patient interactions. I'm in favor of using AI for notetaking, but do have hesitations about using it for other purposes in the medical field. I signed up to trial Suki AI, which I heard the American Academy of Family Physicians endorsed, and a competitor product. I'm all in when it comes to using AI for transcription and summing up visits, but we have to make sure we have appropriate guardrails when going beyond that.

The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay. "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement. "The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the book," Khan said. In a complaint, the FTC said that DoNotPay, which touted its AI service as "the world's first robot lawyer," failed to live up to that claim. "Since about 2023, Defendants' deceptive sales pitch has said their business model is powered by artificial intelligence ("AI")," the suit says.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is defending the role of artificial intelligence — particularly in the workplace — like it's his job. AI can help people boost their productivity right now, Nadella said during a virtual appearance at the Fast Company Innovation Festival 2024 last week. Longer-term, it could help take on roles, even involving decision-making, across "healthcare or in finance or any other domain," he said. All that money has yet to yield a tool that actually helps most businesses earn more revenue, the Goldman Sachs report said. Meta's smart glasses are getting an upgrade. "People love their Ray-Ban Meta glasses so much so that for a little while, we were struggling to keep up with the demand." The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer with polarized lenses costs $329, while the Transitions options are $379, according to Meta's website. The existing models of Ray-Ban Meta glasses let customers capture photos and videos, live stream on Instagram, and accept video calls. Last September, the tech giant announced it was adding Meta AI to its smart glasses for US-based customers, letting them use the virtual assistant AI with the command, "Hey Meta."

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is facing headwinds despite the launch of the new iPhone 16, which offered only incremental improvements over the prior generation. Investors eagerly awaited the company's Apple Intelligence software update, but its absence as a significant growth driver is tempering investor enthusiasm. The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home. These are often referred to as AI-enabled devices and companies from Samsung to Microsoft have released such products. Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage. Bain & Company noted that the semiconductor supply chain is "incredibly complex, and a demand increase of about 20% or more has a high likelihood of upsetting the equilibrium and causing a chip shortage." "The AI explosion across the confluence of the large end markets could easily surpass that threshold, creating vulnerable chokepoints throughout the supply chain," the report added.

The outcome of November's presidential election could have major implications for some popular technology stocks. Meanwhile, a victory by Vice President Kamala Harris may lead to tighter AI regulations focused on safety, ethics and protecting consumers. AI chip giant Nvidia is another likely winner in both split scenarios and a Republican sweep. Heightened antitrust controls over Google and its local search monopoly in a Democrat sweep and split Harris government should also benefit shares of Yelp down 27% this year. Republican sweep Raymond James views Salesforce as a potential big winner in a Republican sweep, noting that "more favorable" corporate tax rates should benefit cyclical software names.
