The State of Pizza in the Pizza State

And a New New Haven SliceIf Chrissy’s is repping the New York pie, then Lala’s in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is the Connecticut delegate. This city isn’t exactly head over heels for rival pizza styles, so it’s particularly brave of Grimm Artisanal Ales to give over its entire rooftop to apizza (the New Haven term for its local style). I’ve been a fan of Grimm for a long time — it was going hard on light-bodied sours during the New England I.P.A. Go for the tomato pie, a cracker-thin pizza with shaved garlic, or the cozy pie with chunks of potato. You want New York pizza?

What They Paid for Their Weddings

One couple spent less than $2,000 for an intimate wedding at a local hotel. Another paid $200,000 for an elaborate out-of-town affair. We asked six married women to share how much they spent on their weddings — and where they felt the money was well-spent, where it was wasted and what they wish they had done differently. Our suite had a terrace with romantic views of the city — and it had just snowed, so there was a magical, wintry feel too. The solution was to fry the pizza dough, with ricotta and pork fat tucked inside, for a puffier and more substantial effect. With several locations in Miami, Rey Pizza offers Cuban pizza varieties that include chorizo, picadillo (ground beef) and platano (plantain). New York slice pizzaNew Yorkers just fold their slices to eat on the move. “New York slice pizza uses a low-moisture and low-fat mozzarella that’s dry, almost more of a provolone,” Verde says. Carlos Macci spent decades struggling with addiction, selling heroin and fentanyl not to make money but to ease his own cravings, according to court records. He was part of a four-man crew selling drugs out of an apartment in Williamsburg, and on Sept. 5, 2021, he was with a man who sold a bag of fentanyl-laced heroin to the actor Michael K. Williams. Mr. Williams, who became famous for playing a charismatic stickup man named Omar Little on the HBO series “The Wire,” took the drugs back to his Brooklyn apartment and was found dead the following day, still wearing the same clothes he had on the day before. On Tuesday, Mr. Macci, now 72, walked into Federal District Court in Manhattan, his shoulders stooped, and apologized for his role in Mr. Williams’ death. The judge sentenced him to 30 months in prison.

The walls are crowded with Puerto Rican flags and portraits of the bar’s owner and matriarchal figure, Maria Antonia Cay, who is more commonly known as Toñita. She opened the place in the 1970s as the Caribbean Social Club, a members-only hangout for the neighborhood baseball team. In 2000, she obtained a liquor license and opened the spot to everyone for cheap drinks and pots of Puerto Rican dishes that she makes in her apartment kitchen upstairs. “It reminds me of home,” said Djali Brown-Cepeda, an archivist and filmmaker who runs the Nuevayorkinos Instagram account.

Over the last decade, as dairy-free ice cream gained a foothold in the commercial market, its flavors were limited, its texture was often watery and its taste could be questionable. Today, many of these ice creams are smooth and creamy. They can twirl like soft serve and pack into scoops for waffle cones. And the options for both soft and hard versions have vastly improved as the plant-based milk and creamers used to make them have gotten better. “It was just as creamy as regular soft serve,” said Ms. Darnell, 26, who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Martin Hoffmann, the co-CEO and CFO of Swiss footwear and sports apparel brand On Holding , said Wednesday that physical locations continue to play a major role in retail. "Retail really is an important element now, it really elevates how you experience the brand. "All of a sudden, you have a huge uptick in [ecommerce], Harrod's next door makes more revenue, sees more inflow of apparel requests, so it's really working." On Holding recently opened a retail location in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, with the aim of connecting with the local community, especially growing families, according to Hoffmann. We want to grow long term, so we don't need to chase anything in the next one or two years," he said.

But gifted programs aren't the only way to give your child those benefits — and that's important. "Truthfully, a lot of the services that are provided would benefit a much larger group of kids," Peters tells CNBC Make It. Here are three strategies you can use to mimic a gifted program's advantages outside the classroom, he says. But a parent calling their child "gifted" or "special" might come off as empty praise, says Peters. "Teaching isn't easy, and different kids learn best in different ways," Twersky noted.

Where Do New Yorkers Want to Rent?
  + stars: | 2023-06-22 | by ( Michael Kolomatsky | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If you’re moving to New York City and want to find the most popular rental neighborhoods, it makes sense to follow locals in the know. Recently, RentHop did just that by studying web traffic to New York City listings that originated from within the city. Two Queens neighborhoods and four Brooklyn neighborhoods showed increased popularity. Astoria, Queens, rose to the top from ninth place a year ago. Other drops in Manhattan included Greenwich Village and the West Village, ranked 10th and 11th, each dropping six spots from last year; and the Bowery area ranked 13th, falling seven spots.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been popping up in unexpected places this year. She was in court in March, dressed impeccably, and won $1 after being found not at fault for a ski crash. Well, not in the flesh, but her persona was present as a handful of drag queens put on their best performances in honor of Ms. Paltrow, the actress and founder of the lifestyle brand Goop. Scenes from Ms. Paltrow’s oeuvre played on a loop on screens throughout the bar and performance space. Ms. Paltrow was unavailable for comment, she added.

The Black-Owned Restaurants of Bed-Stuy

This spring, while looking for a new apartment, I realized how much change had taken place. I might qualify as someone who has contributed to the gentrification of Bed-Stuy, but I also look like I belong. But I found a rent-stabilized apartment blocks away from my old place. When a new restaurant or business opens in this corner of Bed-Stuy, I wonder: Is it Black-owned? Walk up Lewis Avenue past Peaches on a weekend morning and it’s spilling over with Black and brown customers.

Closer to home, an easier alfresco option might be your very own backyard (or stoop, sidewalk, courtyard or fire escape). Yotam Ottolenghi has a new recipe this week that’s slightly more involved, but just as colorful and fresh. Zaalouk with tahini is a Moroccan salad with spiced tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, all coated in a plush tahini-lemon dressing. Make Way for the Bike Bus
  + stars: | 2023-06-06 | by ( John Surico | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a recent Wednesday morning in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, parents and children met up in McCarren Park with all manner of wheels: electric cargo bikes, scooters, tricycles, classic cruisers. Along the way, other families, tracking the group’s location, joined the slow-moving peloton, also known as the “bike bus.”The bike bus is an increasingly popular way to get to school. Gradually, it made its way stateside and to the Metropolitan area. Some fans have nicknamed the movement “kidical mass,” a play on a cycling event where groups spontaneously take over the streets. When Drury Thorp, a teacher at Watchung Elementary School in Montclair, N.J., read an article about a “bike bus” in Portland, Ore., she reached out to a local cycling group, and they charted a route.

I’m looking forward to eating outdoors as much as humanly possible before it gets unbearably hot. That said, it’s reader question time and, as usual, my inbox was full of thoughtful and fun requests, including where to go for large-format dining, where to find carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style artichokes) and where to have great nonalcoholic drinks. As always, please email your questions to wheretoeat@nytimes.com, and you may see them answered in a future newsletter. One of our favorite things to do with friends is to go out to eat where fixed-menu, family-style dining is offered. — Joy W.Francie, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has a whole roast duck for $135 that’s presented with various flora before it’s carved up.

In 2021, the foundation raised a record-breaking $102 million, up 42 percent from the previous high in 2019. Those projects have won support across the political spectrum, including from Gov. “The scholarship of decades has shown us this fuller, richer picture of Early America,” Wulf said. But it’s the real thing.”A Patriotic ShrineColonial Williamsburg has its own complicated founding story. In the 1920s, a local minister persuaded John D. The consensus among young people seems to be “that we are screwed as it relates to climate,” the self-described decarb bro, who is 25, continued.
