CNN —After a two-decade absence, at least one lion has returned to Chad’s Sena Oura National Park. Lions haven’t been spotted in the park for almost 20 years, says the news release. Lions are considered extinct in Sena Oura, located near Chad’s border with Cameroon, by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. “This has produced better protection of the national parks and wildlife populations are now starting to recover,” it added. Their populations are especially “small and fragmented” in west and central Africa, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

CNN —Crouching in the brush of Kenya’s Ruma National Park, award-winning conservation photographer Anthony Ochieng Onyango eyes what he’s spent a year looking for – the roan antelope. It’s estimated there are only 60,000 of them left on the continent, and as of July 2021, there were only 15 living in Ruma National Park, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service. After he quickly alerted officials, the turtle was rescued and is still recovering at a rehab facility. The rehab facility confirmed the turtle had been exposed to red tide, a toxic algae bloom. Upon zooming in with his drone, it was obvious to McCarthy that the turtle needed help, and needed it fast. He knew the video would help him show that the turtle needed help. FWC notified Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which was located nearby and has a dedicated rescue and rehab facility for marine life.

Fish and Wildlife Service contends it was an error to take manatees off the endangered list in 2017, leaving the slow-moving marine mammals listed only as threatened. Under the Endangered Species Act, a species is considered endangered if it is “in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range.” A threatened species is one that may become endangered in the foreseeable future. “Re-designating manatees as endangered will be a critical first step in righting a terrible wrong,” Rose said. The Fish and Wildlife Service has 90 days to determine whether restoring the manatee to endangered status is warranted and, if so, 12 months from the date of the petition to complete a review of the manatee’s status.

A Florida Keys boat captain was arrested on a manslaughter charge Thursday in connection with a deadly parasailing trip this year, officials said. An arrest warrant accused the captain, Daniel Gavin Couch, 49, of not checking the weather before the May 30 trip and then cutting the towline to his passengers’ parasail during strong winds. Couch was arrested Thursday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on a warrant for one charge of manslaughter and five counts of violation of commercial parasailing statutes, the commission said. The FWC said Couch hadn’t recently checked weather conditions before he took 12 passengers on the parasailing trip May 30. Cutting the towline was called a “gross and flagrant decision” that severed the group’s only means of safe return.
