1 in 3 children worldwide is now nearsighted, study shows
  + stars: | 2024-09-25 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Nearsightedness, or myopia, refers to when closer objects are clear, but distant objects are blurry. Nearsightedness is expected to keep rising among children and adolescents. This could be due in part to the fact that East Asian children start formal education at the age of 2 or 3, earlier than kids in other regions, the researchers say. Progression of nearsightedness in children can be slowed by taking breaks and avoiding hour after hour on the phone or computer, he wrote. Limiting up-close reading time outside of school — screen time or otherwise — may help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, he added.

CNN —The United States is working urgently on a plan to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, according to three sources familiar with the matter, as officials eye with deepening concern the prospects of a widening conflict. The efforts come as Israel’s top general said Wednesday that the Israeli military is preparing for a possible ground incursion into Lebanon. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the green light for his government to engage with the US efforts, an Israeli official told CNN. Amos Hochstein, a senior White House adviser, is involved, the source said, adding that the Americans are not talking to Hezbollah directly. Because while there’s a very legitimate issue here, we don’t think that war is the solution,” he told NBC News.

CNN —The US announced a $375 million aid package for Ukraine on Wednesday as the Biden administration pledged “unwavering support” to the war-torn country. The plan includes Kyiv’s long-stated request to use US-manufactured long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russia, an ask that the Biden administration has repeatedly denied. which the Biden administration has repeatedly denied. The Biden administration has nearly $6 billion left in unused presidential drawdown authority that is set to expire at the end of the month. A shortage in excess stockpiles of weapons the US was willing to send Ukraine forced the Biden administration to announce smaller military aid packages of approximately $200 million over the last several months.

House Oversight Chair James Comer is opening an investigation into Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Sunday visit to an ammunition factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The Republican investigation comes as the relationship between Zelenskyy and former president Donald Trump seems to sour. On Wednesday, Trump accused Zelenskyy of insulting him — Trump said the Ukrainian president was "making nasty little dispersions toward" him — and adding that he got along with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very well." Zelenskyy is in the United States to attend the UN General Assembly high-level week in New York, where he is meeting with world leaders. Trump was expected to meet with the Ukrainian President on Thursday at Trump Tower, but a Trump campaign official told NBC News Wednesday that the meeting was not happening.

Studying brain health among diverse populationsTo tackle the gap in knowledge, the authors studied participants enrolled in the United States-based All of Us Research Program between May 2017 and June 2022. The authors included only dementia, stroke and late-life depression in their list of brain health outcomes since those are some of the most prominent diseases that affect neurological, psychiatric and cognitive aspects of the brain. Of the 393,041 adults age 51 on average, about 10% belonged to sexual or gender minority groups. Of that subset, 97% identified as a sexual minority and 11% as a gender minority, but these two groups weren’t mutually exclusive. However, the reasons behind this effect remain elusive.”There is no evidence that being a sexual or gender minority alone causes worse brain health, experts said.

WASHINGTON — The Senate unanimously passed legislation Tuesday to boost Secret Service protection for presidential candidates, sending the bill to the White House for President Joe Biden's signature. The strong show of bipartisan support came days after the House passed the measure, known as the Enhanced Presidential Security Act, without any opposition in a 405-0 vote. The bill would give former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris the same level of protection provided to Biden. It comes the same month as an apparent second attempt to assassinate Trump.

Why Trump is polling better in Georgia than North CarolinaBy Steve KornackiThe latest round of New York Times/Siena College state polls is a continuation of what has become a pattern: Donald Trump seems to be faring slightly better in Georgia than in North Carolina. And Trump is up by 2 points in North Carolina, where he prevailed by 1.3 points four years ago. And yet — at least in polling — it’s Georgia, not North Carolina, where Trump seems better positioned. According to exit polling, Trump won the noncollege white vote in each state by roughly the same margin in 2020: 59 points in Georgia and 57 points in North Carolina. It’s a smaller lead among a slightly smaller share of the electorate than Harris has over those early voters.

But it’s something politicians have struggled with achieving on their own — particularly amid an election cycle in which many young voters find themselves jaded with politics as a whole. Political organizations supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are touting both campaigns' messages of “freedom” as they woo Latinas, a key voting bloc. Also, at least 13 states saw increases in Latina voter registrations when Biden left the race and endorsed Harris, according to TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier. SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. A St. Louis County circuit judge and Gayle’s family also agreed to the deal, but state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, opposed it, and the state Supreme Court agreed. A judge ultimately rejected the motion to vacate, a ruling Williams’ attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court in the hearing Monday. In addition to the state Supreme Court appeal, Williams’ attorneys also have an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court and a clemency request before Missouri Gov.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday proposed prohibiting key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads due to national security concerns, a move that would effectively bar Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market. The planned regulation, first reported by Reuters, would also force American and other major automakers in years ahead to remove key Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States. President Joe Biden’s administration has raised concerns about data collection by connected Chinese vehicles on U.S. drivers and infrastructure and potential foreign manipulation of vehicles connected to the internet and navigation systems. The proposed prohibitions would prevent testing of self-driving cars on U.S. roads by Chinese automakers and extend to vehicle software and hardware produced by Russia and could be extended to other U.S. adversaries. The group said there is “very little” connected vehicle hardware or software “that enters the U.S. from China.

The new measures appeared to be visible Monday when Trump got off his plane in Pennsylvania and a Secret Service agent followed closely behind. Prosecutors from Smith's office have said that such a filing is necessary because it would address the Supreme Court's concerns about presidential immunity issues in the case while limiting the number of possible appeals. They have asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the election interference case, to allow them to file a 180-page brief on the issue by Thursday. Smith's office declined comment Monday night. If Chutkan allows prosecutors to file their motion, it's unclear how much of it would be made public. In a separate filing over the weekend, Smith's office said "the opening brief and its exhibits contain a substantial amount of Sensitive Material, as defined by the Protective Order" and would require redactions.
