In the first 2024 presidential debate in Atlanta on Thursday night, the performances of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump failed to live up to that expectation. Former President Donald Trump's presentation fared better than his substance, says champion debate coach, Graham Todd. In that regard, Trump failed. I don’t know more about Trump’s position and solution to the war in Gaza than I did before the debate. And Biden didn’t help himself out by overextending his answers to the point of confusion.

Things would be very different in 2024 if Biden decided to leave the race, although Democrats’ convention will return to Chicago in August. It also means that if Biden dropped out of the race, it would largely be Biden backers who would be responsible for picking his replacement. You can assume, for instance, that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a top contender to be on the ballot in such a scenario. The DNC actually needed to convene a meeting to affirm Sargent Shriver as Democratic nominee George McGovern’s second-choice running mate. Under the 20th Amendment, if a president-elect dies, his or her running mate, the vice president-elect, becomes president.

CNN —In CNN’s presidential debate, President Joe Biden was halting and, at times, trailed off and confused words, feeding a nagging narrative about his fitness for the presidency. Trump said Biden couldn’t drive a golf ball 50 yards, and Biden challenged Trump to a golf match but only if Trump carries his own clubs. We’ve got to take a look at what I was left when I became president, what Mr. Trump left me. -TrumpBiden said Trump deserves blame for watching the riot at the Capitol unfold for hours without doing anything to intervene. CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

Kaz Hosaka, a prominent Japanese-born dog handler who guided two miniature poodles to Best in Show victories at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show — the second one just last month — died on Sunday in Langhorne, Pa. His wife, Roxanne Wolf, said the cause was a traumatic brain injury as a result of a fall. Mr. Hosaka was a masterly handler for more than 40 years. Edge, a lifestyle magazine, recently said he was “to the poodle world what Michael Jordan is to basketball. Smooth, clever, elegant and nearly unbeatable.”In a profile in The New York Times in 2009, he was described as “an artist who tends his poodles’ poufs as if they were bonsai trees from his native Japan.”Mr. Hosaka radiated intensity, from the backstage grooming area to the green carpeted show rings, said David Frei, a former voice of the televised Westminster show and the club’s former communications director.

The purpose of the network was to smuggle people, not bring in terrorists, one of the officials said. There was specific “derogatory information” linking those individuals to ISIS, the official said. In the latest case, the 400 migrants under scrutiny – mostly from Central Asian nations – are being screened purely because of their connection to the human smuggling network. The leadership of ISIS-K is mainly made up of Tajik nationals and the group has recruited from both countries. Tajik nationals have carried out a series of recent attacks in Europe on behalf of the group, including the Crocus Hall attack in Moscow in March that killed more than 100 people.

So it would be an oversimplification to say that Republicans moved more MAGA and Democrats moved more moderate based on these two unrelated races. Former President Donald Trump personifies MAGA, and a large part of the Make America Great Again ethos he pushes is loyalty to him. That primary voters did not hold the spending against Latimer, as progressives argued they should, also reminds me that voters (especially Democrats) in presidential cycles tend to be cautious. Utah went its own wayWhile Boebert’s victory provides a foil for Bowman’s loss, it was far from a perfect night for more MAGA Republicans. It’s a shame that primary voters are becoming the de facto general election voters in states and districts that lean heavily to one side or the other, according to former Indiana Gov.

A return to the roots of presidential debates

I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

The victim’s mother told police Wolf was questioning where she was from and if the two children playing at the pool were hers, the release said. Remains of the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in deep water, and perhaps the oldest complete wreck in any water, have been located in the Mediterranean Sea about 56 miles off the coast of northern Israel. The Israel Antiquities Authority, which announced the find on Thursday, said that preliminary examination of two clay jars known as Canaanite amphorae indicated that the merchant vessel, an estimated 39 to 46 feet long, sank sometime between 1400 B.C. and 1300 B.C., an epoch when the Egyptian empire stretched from what is now northern Syria to Sudan, and the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun briefly sat on the throne. Whether the galley was the victim of a sudden storm, a wayward wind or attempted piracy is unclear. No spectacular new finds have surfaced since then.

Though Justice Clarence Thomas’ decision in a major trademark case last week was unanimous, it prompted a sharp debate led by Justice Amy Coney Barrett over the use of history to decide the case. “There definitely is the potential formation here of an alternative or several alternative approaches to history that ultimately draw a majority,” Wolf said. “What we could be seeing is a more nuanced approach to using that history,” said Elizabeth Wydra, president of the progressive Constitutional Accountability Center. But in a striking concurrence that captured support from both liberal and conservative justices, Justice Elena Kagan asserted that the court’s historic analysis need not end with the late-18th century. Barrett’s concurrence said the dispute could have been dealt with based on the court’s past precedent with trademark law and stressed that just leaning on the nation’s trademark history wasn’t good enough.

“Is this a political war to the knife?”I was not familiar with that term – “war to the knife” – but Bannon also recently used it in an interview with ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Ousted from White House role in 2017Bannon’s tenure in Trump’s White House was relatively short; he was fired in August 2017, part of a major reorganization under then-chief of staff John Kelly, who was brought in to control a chaotic atmosphere. As chief strategist at the White House, Bannon was known for large whiteboards full of lists of priorities – things that still ring true in the priorities he outlined over the weekend. Courts, Congress and mismanagement kept Bannon and Trump from achieving many of these goals in Trump’s first term. Anticipating the potential for a second Trump term, there are any number of supporters who are mapping out how to make the most of it.

Obama enacted DACA; Trump tried to end itThe DACA policy was enacted after bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform efforts failed for the umpteenth time. Nearly 600,000 people have sought protected status under the program, which defers but does not necessarily end any immigration action against them. The Trump administration tried to end the DACA program in 2017, but the effort eventually failed at the Supreme Court in 2020. Instead, Trump hit pause on new applications, something the Biden administration then reversed. The much more modest bipartisan effort pushed by Biden earlier this year would not have helped the undocumented spouses of citizens and their children.
