Read previewDonald Trump has been an outspoken critic of EVs — and that could spell trouble for America's electric vehicle industry. AdvertisementMusk also reportedly played a part in Trump choosing Ohio senator JD Vance, an even fiercer critic of electric vehicles, as his vice president. Subsidy fearsThe potential loss of the $7,500 tax credit has already sparked concern in the EV industry. "If we see that tax credit cut, then EVs start looking insurmountably expensive for most consumers," he said. "They're already making money building electric vehicles, and the incentive just helps boost volume rather than boosting profits," he added.

To reread "Hillbilly Elegy" now, as I did this week, is to feel a sense of disorientation. JD Vance the author sounds a lot different than JD Vance the politician. Personally, I first read "Hillbilly Elegy" in college, in an earnest if somewhat contrived attempt to better understand communities unlike mine. On stage, he recounted a story that also appears in "Hillbilly Elegy," where Mamaw bluntly threatens violence against one of Vance's friends. There are hints of this in "Hillbilly Elegy" as well: He served as a public affairs Marine, where he was trained in the art of media relations, including "how stay on message."

Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio on Wednesday railed against decades of American policy in his major national moment as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Like former President Donald Trump, Vance underlined a populist Republican Party to the point that he came out to a Merle Haggard hit that was written in protest of the war in Iraq. In selecting Vance, Trump eschewed the traditional considerations in finding a running mate. "He chose to endure abuse, slander, and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country," Vance said. "To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate," Hughes added. Biden-Harris communications director Brian Fallon told Business Insider that the Trump-Vance campaign was trying to back down from having to debate Harris live. Representatives for the Trump-Vance campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment from BI sent outside regular business hours. Gaelen Morse | ReutersRepublican presidential nominee Donald Trump's pick of Sen. JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate will have sent chills down spines in Kyiv Tuesday morning. Ash has previously questioned Vance's position on Ukraine and the suggestion that Europe should bear the responsibility of helping Ukraine to defend itself against Russia. Trump has always appeared ambivalent over the war in Ukraine and continuing aid. The comment was an ominous one for Ukraine, however, suggesting Trump could be tempted to pull the rug on further aid. "Donald Trump would mean a big break with a couple of NATO policies, in particular on the question of Ukraine and support to Ukraine.
