CNN —Five former and current members of the US Coast Guard testified before a subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment while serving and called for major changes to how the Coast Guard handles reports. It’s the first to be released out of a string of ongoing government inquiries triggered by CNN’s reporting on a secret Coast Guard probe into sexual abuse at its prestigious Coast Guard Academy. “It’s the exact same story, and the Coast Guard is just saying, ‘It’s OK.’ I’m tired of the words,” Ward said. Action actually has to be taken in order to do it.”In closing, Ward told the committee, “I loved the Coast Guard. But there is a certain part of the Coast Guard that is completely broken.”

Archaeologists uncover ancient pot of gold

Researchers discovered the stash in Notion, an 80-acre fortified city that was occupied from about the sixth century BC to the first century AD. “No one ever buries a hoard of coins, especially precious metal coins, without intending to retrieve it. One gold coin would have been the equivalent of a month’s salary for a mercenary soldier, according to the University of Michigan. Those were known as Persian silver sigloi, 20 of which would equate to one gold coin. Because of the gold coin’s high value, “it was far more efficient to store wealth in gold coins than in silver,” he added.

An analysis of newly described Homo floresiensis fossils published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications attempts to answer some of these questions about the tiny human. Liang Bua cave is the only other place where hobbit fossils have been found. The Mata Menge humerus fragment (left) is shown at the same scale as the humerus of Homo floresiensis from Liang Bua. Most people undergo a knee replacement due to osteoarthritis in the joint, which can cause pain, swelling and less knee mobility. “We’ve always had this idea that muscle mass matters and helps protect joints,” said Miller, who was not involved with the study. The data that van Meurs and her colleagues studied came from people with an average body mass index of 26. “Before engaging in a lot of weight-bearing activity, do some training in the gym to strengthen your leg muscles,” van Meurs said. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged Sunday that he abandoned a young dead bear in Central Park after he initially planned to skin the cub for meat. Kennedy described driving north of New York City to go falconing with a group when he saw a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. "It's going to be a bad story," Kennedy predicted in the video as people laughed. A dead bear cub was found in Central Park in 2014, leading to significant media coverage. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation referred NBC News' request for comment to the New York Police Department, which did not immediately respond.

Back then, breaking’s fundamental movements provided escapism and expression, competitive and spontaneous physical performance breathed to life by the dawning genre of hip-hop. But breaking — not “break dancing,” a term coined by media and disdained within the breaking community — no longer belongs solely to New York City. In Paris, Olympic breakers representing countries like Japan, Lithuania and Morocco will compete one-on-one in battles waged for a global television audience. Technology like VHS tapes, DVDs and video platforms like YouTube allowed breakers around the world to learn moves and iterate new ones. “That’s why I love it so much, because it’s never the same,” said Menno van Gorp, who will represent the Netherlands.

"I was driving up really early, and a woman in a van in front of me hit the bear and killed it, a young bear. He then said his friends, who had been drinking, encouraged him to abandon the carcass in Central Park in New York. To dispose of the carcass, Kennedy said he intentionally left the dead bear on the side of the road to make it appear like a car had hit the bear. CNN —With two presidential candidates fighting over a mere 538 Electoral College votes, a tie scenario is more than possible. Those individual, competitive electoral votes in Maine and Nebraska become hugely consequential in potential tie scenarios. AdvertisementLisa Van Meurs, a 26-year-old TikToker living in Barcelona, also started using ChatGPT as a manifesting tool for creating vision boards and story prompts. Clinical psychologist and manifestation expert Anna Kress said AI can be an "incredible tool to enhance manifestation practices," and can help people "break through psychological barriers." "I can see it being extremely useful for people who want to try manifestation practices but struggle with creativity or visualization," Kress said. Kress recommends using the tool as a supplement, rather than a replacement of inner work and personal insight.

CNN —A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents that influences weather across the world could collapse as soon as the late 2030s, scientists have suggested in a new study — a planetary-scale disaster that would transform weather and climate. This research suggests it’s more likely than not to collapse by 2050. The impacts of an AMOC collapse would leave parts of the world unrecognizable. The emphasis in ocean research on the timing of the collapse is a relatively new development, said Rahmstorf. This research gap means the predictions could underestimate how soon or fast a collapse would happen, Rahmstof said.

Eleven years ago, in 2013, Holder said that Mohammed and his associates would have been “on death row as we speak” had the case gone to federal court as he proposed. But he blamed Congress for blocking a federal trial that would have resulted in swifter justice. They were dealt a bad hand by the political hacks and those who lost faith in our justice system,” Holder said in a statement to NBC News on Thursday. “If my decision to try KSM and his confederates in the tested and effective federal court system had been followed they would be nothing more than a memory today,” Holder said. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said he’s “long advocated that our federal court system is perfectly capable of conducting this kind of trial” and was well-suited to handling serious crimes.

Can Gouda’s Cheesemakers Stall a Sinking Future?
  + stars: | 2024-08-01 | by ( Nina Siegal | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a recent morning in Gouda, a small city in the Netherlands, hundreds of wheels of yellow cheese lay out in rows on the cobblestones of the town square, a backdrop to the city’s weekly cheese market, which dates to the Middle Ages. Ad van Kluijve, a farmer dressed in blue work shirt, red bandanna, blue cap and wooden clogs, haggled with a buyer over the price of his latest batch of “jong belegen,” famous for its mild caramel flavor. In the rest of the world, it is one of many cheeses named after the city in which it is traded. The haggling is largely a performance for tourists as the actual price negotiations take place elsewhere. The cheese industry in the region is very real, though, accounting for about 60 percent of the national cheese production, with an export value of $1.7 billion annually, according to ZuivelNL, which represents the Dutch dairy sector.
