CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

Doug Mills, a veteran photographer for The New York Times who has been taking photographs of presidents since 1983, was only feet away from former President Donald J. Trump at the rally in Butler, Pa., when shooting started. The former president was maybe an hour late. Donald J. Trump arrived, waving to the crowd, just like any other rally he does. There’s a pool of photographers, maybe four of us, who were in what is called the buffer area just a couple feet from the former president. We were all jostling around in there trying to get our normal pictures.

The world’s best cyclists have been battling one another in the Tour de France since late June. But the Tour is won in the high mountains. But Vingegaard, 27, and Pogacar, 25, are expected to resume their two-man race for the yellow jersey when a traverse of the Pyrenees begins on Saturday. Pogacar leads the field by about one minute after success in the race’s first pass through the Alps. But Vingegaard seems to be recovered from an injury he suffered earlier this year and could have the wherewithal to land a third straight Tour.

New York CNN —Radio host Andrea Lawful-Sanders has resigned from WURD Radio after admitting her post-debate interview with President Joe Biden included questions that were pre-selected by Biden’s campaign team, the station told CNN Sunday. “As a result, Ms. Lawful-Sanders and WURD Radio have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.”WURD is Pennsylvania’s only Black-owned talk radio station. In an interview Saturday with CNN’s Victor Blackwell, she said those questions were part of eight that were recommended to her by Biden aides ahead of the interview. Biden’s debate performance has left many top Democrats wringing their hands in frustration and concern amid talk that he should not accept the party’s nomination. The Biden campaign said later Saturday it will no longer suggest questions to interviewers.

CNN —Paris’ iconic Moulin Rouge windmill has been fitted with new blades, nearly three months after they fell off the landmark. Jean-Victor Clerico, General Manager of Moulin Rouge Paris, said that the aim was to reinstall the blades before July 15, when the Olympic flame passes the venue on its way to the opening of the Summer Games. Located in Paris’ Montmartre district and established in 1889, the Moulin Rouge is one of the world’s most famous cabaret clubs. Over the years, the venue has endured fires and undergone renovations to maintain its grandeur, according to the Moulin Rouge website. The unveiling of the new Moulin Rouge windmill comes as another iconic Parisian venue closes.

CNN —Joe Biden’s team provided a list of questions to a radio host who interviewed the president this week in the aftermath of his debate performance, the host told CNN. CNN reporting later clarified that it was the Biden campaign that handled the interview. Blackwell pointed out that both Lawful-Sanders and Earl Ingram, host of “The Earl Ingram Show” in Milwaukee who also interviewed the president this week, asked Biden “essentially the same questions.”A Biden campaign spokesperson on Saturday did not deny that the campaign provided questions but said interviews were not conditioned on the acceptance of provided questions. Reached for comment Thursday night, a Biden campaign spokesperson slammed the “absurdity” of criticism of the president’s missteps. “Meanwhile, Joe Biden and his campaign are bullying media into asking pre-screened and approved questions and trying to pass it off like it’s normal behavior.

The questions asked of President Biden by two radio interviewers this week were provided in advance to the hosts by members of Mr. Biden’s team, one of the hosts said Saturday morning on CNN. Andrea Lawful-Sanders, the host of “The Source” on WURD in Philadelphia, said Biden officials had provided her with a list of eight questions ahead of the interview on Wednesday. “The questions were sent to me for approval; I approved of them,” she told Victor Blackwell, the host of “First of All” on CNN. Asked if it was the White House that had sent the questions to her in advance, she said it was. “And the four that were chosen were the ones that I approved.”

According to the report, one of the operations in Project Kylo would have cost the Russian spies around $3 a month to manipulate one Western internet user. "It is precisely the fear for the future, uncertainty about tomorrow, the inability to make long-term plans, the unclear fate of children and future generations," the document read. And the number of Russian spies in the West is now estimated to be at the highest it has been in decades. Russian spy activities "are as high or even higher than during the Cold War," a Western intelligence officer told The Financial Times in March. The World’s Next Big Drag Queen Is Brazilian
  + stars: | 2024-06-30 | by ( Jack Nicas | Victor Moriyama | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
São Paulo’s main avenue was packed this month with thousands of people draped in the yellow and green of the Brazilian flag and captivated by a commanding figure atop a tractor-trailer rigged with speakers. From above, the scene could have maybe passed for one of the many political rallies held in the same spot by former President Jair Bolsonaro, the Brazilian far-right leader who has infamously declared that he could never love a gay son. (Though, to be fair, the enormous rainbow flag would be a giveaway.) It was, in fact, one of the world’s largest Pride parades, and the person atop the sound truck was Phabullo Rodrigues da Silva, 30, the gay son of a working-class single mother in Brazil’s north. Yet everyone in the crowd knew him as Pabllo Vittar, a 6-foot-2-inch drag queen in a glittering cutoff Brazilian soccer jersey and shredded jean shorts — one of the biggest pop stars in this nation of 203 million.
