New York CNN —Inflation rates in Canada, the EU and Australia have popped higher in recent months. But that disconnect appears to be fading as inflation rates in the US continue to ease. The US also had a recent scare as inflation rates ticked higher. But after a year of the Fed holding interest rates steady at a 23-year high, inflation rates in the United States are once again declining. High inflation readings around the globe are concerning investors, José Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers, told CNN.

But after Mr. Prigozhin led a short-lived mutiny against Mr. Putin in June last year, Mr. Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash. Last year was “another year of highs in our energy hungry world,” said Juliet Davenport, president of the Energy Institute. Overall, the proportion of fossil fuels in the 2023 global energy mix remained largely the same at 81.5%, down just 0.5% from the previous year. India’s fossil fuel consumption was up 8% last year and, for the first time ever, the country used more coal than Europe and North America, combined. Dhiraj Singh/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesIn China, fossil fuel use soared to a new record high in 2023, up by 6%, as the end of its extended Covid lockdowns led to a rebound in fossil fuels. As people get older, their skeletal muscle function declines, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine. ETThe Supreme Court on Thursday upheld access to a widely available abortion pill, rejecting a bid from a group of anti-abortion organizations and doctors to unravel the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the pill. In a unanimous decision, written by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, the court held that the plaintiffs lacked standing to challenge the F.D.A.’s actions. The case involved easier access: The challenge before the court centered on changes the F.D.A. The safety of the pill: The groups — citing five studies, including two that were later retracted — questioned the safety of mifepristone, which was approved by the F.D.A. Their claim contradicted a large scientific record on the safety of mifepristone and another abortion medication, misoprostol.

CNN —June 6, 2024 marks 80 years since D-Day, the first day of the Normandy landings that laid the foundations for the Allied defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. The Allied troops’ invasion was coordinated across air, land and sea, in what can be described as amphibious landings. On D-Day alone, around 4,440 Allied troops were confirmed dead, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), with more than 5,800 troops wounded or missing. Because Omaha Beach was the bloodiest landing beach, the US Army lost the most men in the amphibious landings. Within minutes of reaching Omaha Beach, 16 of these men were killed and four were wounded.

There is a focus on fake stories to influence attitudes on subjects like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But for the past year, the climate crisis has been the second-most targeted subject, according to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). Official statistics, however, tell a different story: In 2022, renewables accounted for 23% of the energy consumed in the EU. The EU is considered a global leader in tackling planet-heating pollution, but climate disinformation could undermine the bloc’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, compared with 1990 levels. Its community standards policy in the past had only targeted video, but in April, it was expanded to include audio.
