The day after President Biden melted down in Thursday’s prime-time debate, Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia stood beside former President Donald J. Trump on a farm in Chesapeake, gushing. “This is the best Trump rally ever!”In the past, when it suited him, Mr. Youngkin kept his distance from Mr. Trump and his unpredictable behavior. “Hello, Virginia,” Mr. Trump cooed as he took the stage before thousands of his supporters in what Republicans increasingly see as a winnable state. “Did anybody watch a thing called the debate?” He roared: “That was a big one.”On the surface, the rally in Chesapeake was a quick-turn victory lap after the debate and before the 2024 race hits a higher gear.

As negotiations to end the long legal brawl between Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, and the United States reached a critical point this spring, prosecutors presented his lawyers with a choice so madcap that a person involved thought it sounded like a line from a Monty Python movie. His path to freedom, he was told, would pass through one of the two American-held islands in the blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Assange, who feared being imprisoned for the rest of his life in the United States, had long insisted on one condition for any plea deal: that he never set foot in the country. The U.S. government, in turn, had demanded that Mr. Assange plead guilty to a felony for violating the Espionage Act, which required him to appear before a federal judge. In April, a lawyer with the Justice Department’s national security division broke the impasse with a sly workaround: How about an American courtroom that wasn’t actually inside mainland America?

It's simply a matter of time before the current bull rally broadens beyond technology stocks, according to John Stoltzfus, chief market strategist at Oppenheimer. The technology sector has dominated the market runup this year, with the S & P 500 tech group outpacing all others by soaring 28% in 2024. But as the Federal Reserve begins to eventually cut interest rates, Stoltzfus said in an interview with CNBC that the tide will turn. Stoltzfus' year-end S & P 500 target of 5,500 is higher than at least six other forecasts on Wall Street, according to the CNBC Pro Market Strategist Survey. Meanwhile, the market is also due to broaden as investors turn from high stock valuations and diversify thier holdings.

Offices across the nation — and Slack channels, the modern water cooler — were abuzz Friday morning with voluble opinions about the presidential debate from the night before. Should Biden step aside? How many times did Trump lie? Did Biden lie, too? For most chief executives, presidential elections are a nightmare — they create division inside teams, take up valuable time and can turn into a big distraction.

Political conversations are causing strife in our familyWhen I was in high school and living close to my grandmother, I would try to engage her in political debate, but conversations would all too often turn heated, sour, and sometimes even cruel. But it doesn't mean that we don't talk. We just don't talk about things outside our insular familial universe. "When I call your family — they always call right back," Halmoni tells me earnestly. Often, I feel that I'm being irresponsible by pretending like political conversations don't matter.

Now, investment advisors are finding new and expansive use cases for AI in financial management. Vanguard is using AI to aggregate information from earnings transcripts and research reports, and has recently begun using AI to manage four of its stock funds. State Street is adding a generative AI feature to its platform which will answer customer questions about their portfolio and run analyses on portfolio data. There are some risks to using AI in investing, especially when your money could be on the line. Congress has pushed back on the rule, but Crawford is confident that AI regulation is in the cards, given the technology's far-reaching nature.

There were discussions with political advisers about arcane rules under which Mr. Biden might be removed from the ticket against his will and replaced at or before the Democratic National Convention, according to a person familiar with the effort. In Silicon Valley, a group of megadonors, including Ron Conway and Laurene Powell Jobs, were calling, texting and emailing one another about a situation they described as a possible catastrophe. The donors wondered about whom in the Biden fold they could contact to reach Jill Biden, the first lady, who in turn could persuade her husband not to run, according to a person familiar with the conversations. A Silicon Valley donor who had planned to host an intimate fund-raiser featuring Mr. Biden this summer decided not to go through with the gathering because of the debate, according to a person told directly by the prospective host. Another major California donor left a debate watch party early and emailed a friend with the subject line: “Utter disaster,” according to a copy of the email.

Forty-eight hours before President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump clashed onstage in Atlanta on Thursday, the leaders of Britain’s two major parties, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, went head-to-head in Nottingham, England. To say their debates were different doesn’t begin to capture the Atlantic Ocean-sized chasm that separated them. In content, tone and atmosphere, the British debate showcased two politicians in their prime, sparring over the issues — frequently heated, not without personal jabs, but focused on the policy nuances of taxes, immigration and health care. Neither Mr. Sunak, 44, nor Mr. Starmer, 61, brought up his golf handicap. But this week’s back-to-back encounters showed how sharply these democracies have diverged, at least in this election cycle.

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure continued to cool as consumer spending grew only moderately, good news for central bankers who have been trying to weigh down demand and wrestle price increases under control. And on a monthly basis, inflation was especially mild, and prices did not climb on an overall basis. The Fed is likely to watch the fresh inflation data closely as central bankers think about their next policy steps. Officials raised interest rates sharply starting in 2022 to hit the brakes on consumer and business demand, which in turn can help to slow price increases. But they have held borrowing costs steady at 5.3 percent since July 2023 as inflation has slowly come down, and have been contemplating when to begin lowering interest rates.
