CNN —I am going to say the quiet part out loud: some people very much enjoy drama. Ms. Secor, a design consultant, looked out the window at Broadway and saw a stream of people fleeing north. Ms. Secor sold her TriBeCa co-op in 2005, and the couple welcomed twin girls, Romy and Naia, in 2006. But Ms. Secor had lived in New York for more than a decade before 9/11, and she missed the city. In 2013, a photographer convinced the cartoonist to don a Captain America costume for a shoot on the streets of New York. Something about a Sikh Captain America seemed to resonate with people. He wants others to see Sikh Captain America as just AmericanIn summer 2011, Singh saw a promotional poster for “Captain America: The First Avenger” that sparked an idea. “I never fathomed that a 10-year-old White kid would connect to a turban and bearded Captain America,” Singh said. Singh’s Sikh Captain America subverted typical ideas of patriotism – instead of fighting Nazi agent Red Skull and other members of the Axis Powers, Sikh Captain America would fight hate crimes and intolerance in the US.

What’s a Podcast Doing at a Film Festival?

When Winnie and Alex Kemp submitted their first original fiction podcast “The Imperfection” to the 2021 Tribeca Festival, they set their expectations near the curb. The couple, co-founders of the podcast studio Wolf at the Door, believed in the project. At the Tribeca Festival, which dropped the word “film” from its name that year and expanded its focus on video games, virtual reality, music and audio, “The Imperfection” received a warmer reception. Being chosen by Tribeca meant “The Imperfection” was featured with the other festival selections on the Apple Podcasts and Audible home pages, helping it reach the top 20 of Apple Podcasts’ fiction chart. The show was later nominated for best podcast of the year and best fiction writing at The Ambie awards, the industry’s answer to the Oscars.

A flagship location for Frenchette Bakery will open in the Whitney Museum of American Art, replacing the Danny Meyer restaurant Untitled, which closed at the start of the pandemic. In a statement, the museum said it was “reimagining its food and beverage program” for its ground-floor restaurant space. Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson, who own the restaurants Frenchette and Le Rock, opened their first Frenchette Bakery in TriBeCa in 2020, taking over the former Arcade Bakery. Since then, Frenchette Bakery has turned out breads, viennoiserie, sandwiches and pizzettes. The menu at the Whitney location will include both sweet and savory fare, breakfast, lunch, takeaway food and assorted beverages.

The Tribeca Festival Has a Story to Tell

Every spring, the Tribeca Festival returns to Lower Manhattan with a bulky mixed bag of creative programming. Past attendees of the festival might recall Robert De Niro, one of its founders, rapping, “I’ve got a story to tell,” at the start of a bouncy, AT&T-sponsored Tribeca trailer that preceded screenings for half a dozen years. The industry is in crisis, and as the guilds sound alarm bells, it will be interesting to see how Tribeca amplifies their chime. A top U.S. film festival, Tribeca has long served as a kind of industry nexus, platforming big-studio movies beside indies. The festival has also proven a conduit for filmmakers to go from newcomer to big deal.

10 Movies That Capture the Essence of New York

What makes for a strong New York movie? The standouts are often, like the city itself, unpredictable, a little shabby around the edges, sometimes exasperating but always compelling. The Tribeca Festival, which runs Wednesday to June 18, has loved this kind of work since its beginnings and has made it a point to celebrate the films set right in its backyard. This year will feature one such movie made by one of the festival’s founders. The film shows a reverence for the neighborhood in which much of it takes place, and Mr. De Niro brings a knowing eye to the material.

Exploring Rock Hudson’s Legacy Through a New Lens
  + stars: | 2023-06-03 | by ( David Belcher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Rock Hudson was the ultimate midcentury movie star, turning heads and breaking hearts as the camera lit his chiseled face and rugged frame. The double life he led as a gay man — and his death from AIDS-related causes at 59 in 1985 — have sealed him in Hollywood lore, but he is largely unknown to new generations of film fans. For Stephen Kijak, the director of the HBO documentary “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed,” premiering Sunday at the Tribeca Festival (and streaming on Max on June 28), the actor was a fascinating figure to explore, both as a quintessential midcentury movie star and a gay icon. Mr. Kijak, who has directed several L.G.B.T.Q.-themed films, spoke recently from his Los Angeles home about the legacy of and enduring fascination with a movie star who lived a gay life almost out in the open and who, in a true act of openness as one of the first celebrities — if not the first — to go public about his illness, changed the course of how the world responded to the AIDS epidemic. The conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.

The documentary spotlights a profession — conducting — which historically has all but excluded women. In the film, Ms. Contreras, 39, a documentary producer making her directorial debut, delivers an up-close-and-personal portrayal of the contestants as they rev up for a competition whose judges include Ms. Alsop and Ms. Gibault. The five contestants profiled in the film were from France, Germany, the United States, Greece and Poland. In a recent video interview, Ms. Contreras recalled the making of the movie and the challenges faced by women on the concert podium.

How 3 Women Broke Through as Filmmakers

Gabriella A. Moses, whose first directing feature is “Boca Chica,” credits the film industry itself, and her participation in fellowships designed to give women and other newcomers a leg up, for getting noticed by the “right people” who offered the chance to helm the project. Maggie Contreras, the director of “Maestra,” said that she got her break from male colleagues who had already found success in the movie business and decided to give a woman they trusted a chance. Now she is making it a no-excuses priority to bring other female filmmakers along. No matter how women are getting the chance to direct these days, the sentiment that they need to lead a new generation of female filmmakers seems to prevail. All three directors, whose films are showing at the Tribeca Festival, gave key jobs — as producers, writers, designers and editors — to other women.

One of the magic tricks of documentaries is the ability to film somebody changing over a period of time. When it’s a span of several years, audiences can get a unique psychological portrait. But these long-haul projects come with particular challenges and obstacles for the filmmakers who see them through. These documentaries might take anywhere from a few years to more than a decade to shoot and complete, and the reasons vary. Over the course of the film, she forges a career in the tough, often sexist arenas of the art world and the academy.

Some Chinatown residents benefited from the development boom, selling properties to developers or drawing more customers from increased foot traffic. Some residents have shown tentative support for the luxury buildings, saying they might make the neighborhood safer or bring in wealthier Asian residents who could boost Chinatown's economy. Manhattan Chinatown's housing stock is "really aged," which has led to costly fires, according to Thomas Yu, executive director of Asian Americans for Equality. Chinatowns and the pandemicMany debates surrounding luxury development and affordable housing were accelerated by the pandemic, which shuttered hundreds of businesses across Chinatowns. However, business owners who spoke with CNBC said Chinatown's businesses, though still recovering, are keeping the city's culture alive.

The enclave’s appeal rests not only in its mellow neighborhood vibe but also in its access to waterfront living, green spaces and great schools in the area.

If Roman Roy were a real person, he wouldn’t live on the Upper West Side. So said a real-life real estate broker recently. Fans of the show were there with Roman (played by Kieran Culkin) during a recent episode when he solemnly brushed his teeth the morning after a devastating plot twist. Daniella G. Schlisser, the real-life associate broker with Brown Harris Stevens and a listing agent for the apartment, said that if Roman were a real person, she would redirect him south, probably to TriBeCa, where he might receiver a warmer welcome. Given his winning personality, she’d advise him: “No one’s going to talk to you here — you won’t make any friends” in the family-oriented Upper West Side.
New York City’s Most Expensive Neighborhoods

New York City’s notoriously volatile real estate market is cooling — the high end included — according to a new report from PropertyShark. The report showed that in the first quarter of 2023, the median sale price fell in 28 of the city’s 50 most-expensive neighborhoods from a year earlier, while the number of sales dropped or was flat in 46 neighborhoods. Only four of the 50 neighborhoods had a median sale price of $2 million or more, compared with eight in the first quarter of 2022. In the most expensive area, Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, the median sale price rose about 6 percent year-over-year, to $5.729 million; but in TriBeCa, the next most expensive, it fell 6 percent, to $3.5 million. But its $2.6 million median sale price was level from a year earlier, so it was price reductions in other neighborhoods that improved its ranking.
