SYDNEY — A helicopter on an “unauthorized” flight crashed into the roof of a hotel in Australia’s northern tourist town of Cairns on Monday, killing the pilot and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of guests, authorities said. Emergency crews were called at about 2 a.m. (12 p.m. Sunday ET) after the twin-engine helicopter hit the hotel roof, causing a fire and triggering the evacuations, Queensland state police said in a statement. Police said the helicopter had been taken from its hangar for an “unauthorized flight,” but did not elaborate. The pilot, who has yet to be identified, was declared dead at the scene. Helicopter owner Nautilus Aviation said it was cooperating with the police investigation.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Commuting by bus in New York City can be an exercise in frustration. And some bus stops are significantly sweatier than others. A recent study by Transportation Alternatives, a transit advocacy group, found that the absence of bus shelters or shade trees leads to higher temperatures on certain routes and at certain stops. While New York is home to more than 15,000 bus stops, only one in five have bus shelters and just one in three are near tree shade, according to the report.

Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

A Place Where It Snows All Summer

On an 80-degree Friday afternoon in July, at a factory just outside Buffalo, it was snowing. But this was not your run-of-the-mill frozen water vapor. The shredded bits then drifted down a turquoise chute into a cardboard box, forming a soft white mound of what looked like freshly fallen snow. The process was handled by workers in the Flakes Department, one of several teams at the factory in Depew, where the holiday decoration brand Buffalo Snow has been manufacturing blizzards annually since the 1980s. Natural snow, an indelible part of wintertime scenery, has in many places been in short supply lately because of rising temperatures.

From Walz, a Rosier View of a Midwestern Upbringing
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( Dionne Searcey | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the western Nebraska town where Tim Walz came of age, teenagers gathered at the Frosty Drive-In after football practice and spent summers working on farms. The tree-lined streets of JD Vance’s hometown in Ohio surrounded a hulking steel mill that endured layoff after layoff. By his own telling, it was a community “hemorrhaging jobs and hope.”The rural Midwestern back stories presented by the two major-party vice-presidential candidates are strikingly different. Another is a glowing portrait of rural America offered by Mr. Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota who is Vice President Kamala Harris’s new running mate. The rival campaigns are using these opposing depictions of rural life to make very different appeals to voters.

In just a few short days, markets have taken some of the urgency off the table for the Federal Reserve to slash interest rates. Earlier in the week, there were even some calls for an emergency intermeeting rate cut. At the least, markets figured the Fed was a near-certainty to reduce benchmark rates by at least a half percentage point. Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel has been one of the loudest voices for aggressive Fed action, calling Monday for an emergency cut . The Fed has been holding its benchmark rate in a range between 5.25%-5.50% for more than a year.

Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest slowed by nearly half compared to the year before, according to government satellite data released Wednesday. It’s the largest reduction since 2016, when officials began using the current method of measurement. In the past 12 months, the Amazon rainforest lost 4,300 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), an area roughly the size of Rhode Island. Brazil’s deforestation surveillance year runs from August 1 to July 30. Amazon deforestation has steeply declined since the end of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s rule in 2022.

In many cases, prosecutors themselves don't even have access to the source code and haven't reviewed the underlying technology. Back in Akron, the judge in Rankin's case ordered the Cybercheck evidence excluded after prosecutors failed to turn over the source code. The Summit County Prosecutor's Office declined to comment when reached by BI. It's unclear how many others may be behind bars because of Cybercheck evidence that was never rigorously scrutinized.

So what took Walz from, nationally speaking, a relative unknown to major-party vice presidential nominee? But is the Walz pick indicative of a campaign that is too online? After all, the Harris campaign has been riding a wave of good emotions since she became the presumptive Democratic nominee. One of the first rules when it comes to a vice presidential pick is to “Do no harm.” Harris likely did no harm with this pick. She seems to have momentum, and the Walz pick will probably do nothing to impede it.

An analysis of newly described Homo floresiensis fossils published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications attempts to answer some of these questions about the tiny human. Brynden Rivers/Lord Bloodraven in the "House of the Dragon" season two finale. Sydow's character also doesn't have the same red birthmark on his face as Brynden does in "House of the Dragon." It's possible this could be explained in "House of the Dragon" with the idea that the Three-Eyed Raven simply managed to change his appearance over time. Sweaty startups are blue-collar businesses, often in unglamorous or laborious fields like septic services, car washes, or lawn care. It's what your grandparents would've just called a small business, but it was a tongue-in-cheek answer to the Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurship being glorified in culture at that time. Still, some small businesses look to private equity to scale their businesses in different markets, even if that means overhauling operations in some cases. "Small businesses partner with private-equity firms because they provide access to capital and organizational support to help companies grow," Drew Maloney, the council's president and CEO, told BI.
