In today's big story, we're looking at another Tesla earnings report that was light on details about big future plans . The approach worked well last quarter when Tesla's earnings report was even worse than expected . However, big-picture plans without concrete details fell flat for investors this time around. It's Tesla's silver lining amid the EV market slowdown. But as beneficial as competitors were to Tesla this quarter, others seem to be gearing up for battle.

Massive shark is struck by boat in rare video footage
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Jackie Wattles | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours. It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision. The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark. But the video and study findings that came out of the incident are timely for the shark research community, noted Dr. Christopher Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. Protecting basking sharksMcInturf emphasized that Ireland — and the United Kingdom — have already taken significant steps to help protect endangered basking sharks.

DOT investigating Delta over IT outage chaos

Delta Airlines passengers line up for agent assistance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 22, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Aviation Consumer Protection is investigating Delta Air Lines over chaos sparked by last week's global IT outage, according to a statement. The DOT cited widespread flight disruptions and customer service failures in which Delta did not uphold commitments to its passengers, it said. On Tuesday, 12% of Delta flights were canceled and 13% were delayed as of mid-morning, according to FlightAware, with some passengers still stranded in airports even days after the outage. The DOT penalized the airline $140 million, a sum 30 times larger than any previous consumer protection violations penalty from the department.

Tesla profits plunge compared to last year
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Telsa profits plunged more than 40% compared to a year ago, a steeper drop than expected for the company that has been facing a tougher environment for electric vehicle sales. Tesla reported it earned adjusted income of $1.8 billiion in the quarter, or 52 cents a share. Analysts had forecast earnings of 61 cents a share, which still would have been sharply lower than the 91 cents a share it earned a year earlier. It was the second straight quarter of year-over-year sales declines for the company, the first time it ever suffered consecutive quarters of declining sales volume. The company has become the most valuable automaker in the world in large part due to its growth rate of about 50% in some years.

I first learned of the Swype vape on social media, where a few doctored images of its screen had gone viral. AdvertisementNow, an obvious disclaimer: Business Insider does not endorse vaping or starting to vape simply because it seems like it would be funny to have a vape phone. (Samatha Cole of 404 Media also tried out the Swype vape; we didn't plan this. The touchscreen does display notifications when you swipe up — I could see messages from Signal, news push alerts, X notifications, and texts. This app seems designed not for the Swype vape but for some sort of wearable fitness tracker.

CNN —A significant Microsoft outage brought low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines and some competitors to a standstill for hours after a regulator halted departures. “Our systems are currently impacted by a Microsoft outage, which is also affecting other companies,” Frontier said in a statement on its website. The Federal Aviation Administration said Frontier asked it to pause the airline’s departures across the United States. “Due to a global outage at a third party vendor, our booking, check-in, and trip-managing capabilities are temporarily unavailable,” SunCountry said on its site. United, Southwest and American Airlines said they were not impacted by the outage.

"Our conversations with investors have been defined by skepticism about latter stages of AI adoption," Ryan Hammond of Goldman's portfolio strategy research team said in a recent note to clients. "Even among investors that are long-term bullish on the potential gains from AI adoption, there appears to be considerable uncertainty about the timeline." Goldman's AI adoption tracker showed that only 5% of U.S. companies are using generative AI to produce goods and services. Many software companies tied to AI posted disappointing guidance during the last earnings seasons that triggered a sizeable sell-off, Goldman noted. Investors should focus on revised sales forecasts of AI-related companies, Goldman said.

Read previewHere's some less-than-great news if you're looking to job-hop because of your pay: People changing roles likely won't be getting as big of a wage bump as past job switchers. However, the report said that "median pay raises appear to have moderated to around 10%" as of this past May. The drops in the median pay raise for job-to-job movers from 2022 to 2024 were felt across workers in all income groups, the Bank of America Institute found. Still, the report noted that lower-income Bank of America customers — those making under $50,000 a year — had the highest median pay gains. AdvertisementThe report said that those middle- and upper-income job seekers may "have somewhat less leverage and bargaining power in negotiating a raise on taking a job."

Opinion | NATO Has to Change. Here’s How.
  + stars: | 2024-07-07 | by ( Farah Stockman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, NATO’s first supreme allied commander Europe, felt strongly that his mission was to get Europeans “back on their military feet” — not for American troops to become the permanent bodyguard for Brussels and Berlin. Of the $206 billion in military and nonmilitary aid allocated to Ukraine by countries around the world, $79 billion has come from the United States, according to the Ukraine Support Tracker database. Since about 1960, the United States’ share of allied G.D.P. has averaged roughly 36 percent, while its share of allied military spending has been more than 61 percent, according to a Cato Institute report. The supreme allied commander Europe has never been a European.
