Six members of a Wisconsin family found dead after an apartment fire last week each suffered a single gunshot wound, authorities said Monday. At least six people are confirmed dead in an apartment fire in Hartland, Wis., on Friday. The other victims were Jessica McKisick; two girls, 12 and 14; and 3-year-old twin boys, the police department said. The twins were the sons of Connor and Jessica McKisick, Misko said. It was not immediately clear whether the family died in the fire or from the gunshots.

What appear to be "multiple” human remains were found partially submerged in a river in the small Oklahoma city of Okmulgee Friday, nearly a week after the disappearance of four adult friends, authorities said Friday. It wasn’t clear if the remains were of the four men, Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice told reporters. Prentice said he notified the families of the missing men, who were last seen Sunday night leaving a home by bicycle, even though the remains haven’t been identified. The department on Tuesday named the missing men as Mark Chastain, 32; Billy Chastain, 30; Mike Sparks, 32; and Alex Stevens, 29. That data showed them traveling east, then south, Prentice said, adding that authorities hadn't been searching in the area where the remains were discovered.

LOS ANGELES — Convicted criminal and disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti should serve 17½ years in prison after he pleaded guilty to bank fraud and tax offenses in California this year, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. The recommendation was included in a 303-page sentencing memo filed by the U.S. attorney's office for Central California. In the California case, Avenatti admitted pocketing millions of dollars that belonged to clients and lying to them about it, prosecutors said when he pleaded guilty in June. A sentencing memo filed by a lawyer for Avenatti asked for a maximum prison term of three years followed by three years of supervised release. In a separate case, Avenatti was convicted in February 2020 of extortion and other crimes after he threatened to ruin Nike’s reputation unless it agreed to pay him and his client millions of dollars.

A California driver was charged with fatally mowing down a man whom she accused of trying to run over a cat, authorities said Wednesday. Hannah Star Esser, 20, was charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bail in the Sept. 25 encounter in Cypress, a Southern California suburb southeast of Los Angeles, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Prosecutors say Esser confronted Luis Anthony Victor, 43, because she believed he was trying to hit a cat with his car. Six people were injured Wednesday in a shooting at an Oakland, California, school, authorities said. The shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. at a campus with four schools, including a middle school and a high school, in the city's Eastmont Hills neighborhood, Allison told reporters. Schaaf said earlier that the gunfire erupted at Sojourner Truth, a K-12 independent study school also at the campus. Victims were found inside the school, Allison said. A gunman is wanted in the deaths of a man who was fatally shot Tuesday and a toddler, thought to be the victim's son, who was found dead in the back seat of an SUV, Houston authorities said.
