Osaka, Japan CNN —Let’s be honest. Food is practically a religion in Osaka, which is now anticipating the global spotlight as it gears up to host Expo 2025. It is known as the kitchen of Japan, and, for foodies, any tour of its myriad culinary delights must start in Dotonbori. Like so many parts of Japan, Osaka is obsessed with baseball. The club began life in 1936 and briefly played as the Osaka Tigers, before reverting to Hanshin, the city 20 minutes west, where it plays at Koshien Stadium.

Just 20 feet away, a man wearing a mask brandished a gun in the crowded dining room and with a henchman grabbed two phones and a watch from three men at a table near the front door. Diners dashed into the kitchen. Chairs toppled. The perpetrators quick-walked out and fled on a moped, leaving behind a half-empty dining room where a handful of unfired bullets had fallen to the floor. The stickup took less than 40 seconds.

A job French people don’t want? Half of the 86,000-plus chefs in the French capital are immigrants, according to data published by the French National Institute of Statistic and Economic Studies in 2022. Often in Paris, the kitchens are very small, so it’s a very strenuous job,” Mousson said. “For a small business like us, we cannot afford to hire multiple people in the kitchen,” Mousson said. While it remains to be seen if the party can capture an absolute majority in the French National Assembly, it will almost certainly become the biggest force in the new parliament.

I'd been living in the UK for 25 years, but when the pandemic kicked off in March 2020, I decided it was time to go home. It wasn't until returning that I realized how British I'd become and that "home" was more difficult to define. Four years after moving back to the US, I'm grateful for the personal space, the "yes!" But I do miss the cultivated hedgerows of the UK and the quiet, more reserved style of its people.

At the heart of the plan is Starbucks' "Siren Craft System," a series of processes that aim to make baristas' jobs easier and speed up service times for customers. Starbucks said more than 10% of its 10,000 stores have already implemented the system, which includes changing the production order for hot and cold drinks. Starbucks reported rates of incomplete mobile app orders in the mid-teens and said occasional customers came in less. Losing customers because of slow orders and other store frustrations could cost Starbucks at a particularly vulnerable time. The company plans to train existing workers for the role or potentially add new baristas, if needed.

Spring Fertility, a clinic in Midtown Manhattan, looks like the place where the main characters on “Broad City” would have wound up if the millennial sitcom had done an episode about egg freezing. The waiting room has books by America’s youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman and its Instagram poet laureate Rupi Kaur. A conference room also serves as a venue for “shots nights,” less raucous than they sound, where patients inject themselves with fertility drugs communally, with encouragement from staff. The room, Dr. Fischer noted, “looks like a Grey’s Anatomy O.R.”There is always a market for products, from skin care to weight loss, promising to ease the angst of womanhood. The business of egg extraction is thriving, among the privileged group of people who can access it.

CNN —The world’s tallest male dog, a Great Dane named Kevin, has died just days after his title was announced, Guinness World Records (GWR) said on Monday. His family, who live in West Des Moines, Iowa, have been left “devastated,” his owner Tracy Wolfe said in GWR press release. from Guinness World Records“I don’t think he’s aware he is as big as he is,” Tracy said earlier this month. Eventually, he was named the world’s tallest male dog, taking over the title from fellow Great Dane Zeus who also died aged three in September, after suffering from bone cancer. Great Danes have relatively short life expectancies compared to smaller dogs, living for an average of 8-10 years, and males are typically about 2.5 feet (0.76 meters) tall, according to the American Kennel Club.

There’s little to no escape from sweltering temperatures for construction workers like Eva Marroquin, who cleans work sites in Austin, Texas, and has worked in the industry for 17 years. Since 2010, she’s worked closely with the Workers Defense Project, an organization that advocates for protections for low-wage, immigrant workers in the Texas construction industry. Slowing down small businessesIt’s barely just now summer, and heatwaves are already slowing down small businesses, according to Homebase, which provides payroll software to more than 100,000 small businesses, covering 2 million hourly workers. “I think anything that impacts small businesses is affecting the economy as a whole,” he said, noting how small businesses account for half the jobs in the country. For herself, the high heat is more of an inconvenience; the car’s hotter and she just needs to pack some extra water.

London CNN —When Ed Sheeran wrote “Shape of You,” he probably didn’t have this vision of himself sculpted from sushi ingredients in mind. The British megastar is just one of several celebrities whose image has been recreated using ingredients like rice, salmon and pickled ginger by British food artist Michelle Wibowo. Wibowo puts the finishing touches to Sheeran, whose pun-y likeness is pictured alongside "Eelton" John and British TV host Alison "Salmond" Hammond. The unusual creations were on display at the CasildArt Gallery in London as part of a collaboration with Japanese food brand Yutaka to mark International Sushi Day on Tuesday. “I’m used to creating sculptures from unconventional materials, but working with sushi ingredients was a whole other kettle of fish!” Wibowo said in a press release sent to CNN by the organizers.

Bleeding and crying, Dr. Hani Bseso’s teenage niece Ahed called out for him as she slipped in and out of consciousness. A shell had ripped into their home, which had been surrounded by Israeli troops as fighting raged outside that December day. It was too dangerous to make the five-minute drive to Al-Shifa Hospital, where Dr. Bseso, 52, worked in orthopedics. So he grabbed a kitchen knife, scissors and sewing string — then amputated Ahed’s leg on the kitchen table, where her mother had just made bread. With “no tools, no anesthetic, nothing,” he explained, “I had to find a way to save her life.”

As Alina waited for the bus that would take her to her family’s weekend house outside Belgorod, she made sure to wait deep inside the concrete shelter built early this year around the stop. It had been nearly six months since she and her 8-year-old brother, Artem, were almost injured in an attack on Belgorod’s central square, the day before New Year’s Eve, when Alina, 14, had taken him ice skating. “We were lying down, covering our heads with our hands, opening our mouths slightly and just lying on the floor for a long time,” she said, describing how they hid on the kitchen floor of a restaurant just off the square. “It was very scary, but I’m used to it by now,” she added. “And I know what to do in such situations.” In the months that followed, she had panic attacks and suffered from anxiety, said her mother, Nataliya, who like several others interviewed for this article, asked not to be identified for fear of retribution from the authorities.
