President Joe Biden is moving forward with another student debt relief plan. An estimated 8 million federal student loan borrowers experiencing financial hardship may be eligible to have their loans forgiven — some even automatically — if the regulation is finalized as proposed, the Department of Education announced Friday. The proposed regulation is the result of a months-long process known as negotiated rulemaking where the Biden administration worked with stakeholders, experts, advocates and more to develop a plan to deliver debt relief to borrowers facing financial hardship. In the coming weeks, the proposal will head to the Federal Register where it will have a 30-day public comment period before it's finalized. Here's what borrowers may expect if the proposal is finalized as currently written.

Counterfeiting has ballooned into a massive problem for Crye, costing it millions of dollars a year, said Jonathan Antone, the company's general counsel. By 2016, sellers were speaking out about Amazon's growing counterfeit problem, telling CNBC of the company's effort to openly court Chinese manufacturers. "There's a lot more space on that digital shelf for potential counterfeit products," he added. Agents seized "multiple tractor trailer loads" of counterfeit MultiCam products, estimated to be worth $8 million, according to court documents. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. And now scientists have confirmed a new one: Diverse firefly species lit up the night during the late Mesozoic. The discovery comes from a fossil of an ancient firefly species that was initially discovered in 2016, trapped in 99 million-year-old Burmese amber from northern Myanmar. The beetle is only the second firefly species from the Mesozoic to be identified. Because only one other Cretaceous firefly species has been identified, “this new species can be used to revisit the (July 2022 study) to better date the evolution of fireflies given the new evidence,” he added. Then, around 6:30 a.m., two men attempted to break into the synagogue, police say. Philadelphia police are asking the public for help identifying the suspects in the arson and attempted break-in. CNN —The federal government is slapping American Airlines with a $50 million fine after a multi-agency investigation uncovered repeat violations of the rules designed to protect airline passengers who use wheelchairs. The investigation by the Department of Transportation aided by the Justice Department’s civil rights division found that American made “numerous serious violations” of disabled passenger rules between 2019 and 2023. “These problems are not unique to American Airlines, and allegations of wheelchair mishandling and inadequate wheelchair assistance are far too common,” said the Department of Transportation announcement. “DOT has active investigations into similar violations at other US airlines.”Buttigieg said the fine is the largest ever of its type. If the agency finds that American does not meet that requirement, it will fine it the airline the remaining $25 million.
