President Joe Biden is moving forward with another student debt relief plan. An estimated 8 million federal student loan borrowers experiencing financial hardship may be eligible to have their loans forgiven — some even automatically — if the regulation is finalized as proposed, the Department of Education announced Friday. The proposed regulation is the result of a months-long process known as negotiated rulemaking where the Biden administration worked with stakeholders, experts, advocates and more to develop a plan to deliver debt relief to borrowers facing financial hardship. In the coming weeks, the proposal will head to the Federal Register where it will have a 30-day public comment period before it's finalized. Here's what borrowers may expect if the proposal is finalized as currently written.

CNN —Senior-level personnel changes at the US Secret Service as well as the creation of new divisions are underway as the agency works to resolve security breakdowns that preceded the two attempts on former President Donald Trump’s life this summer. Typically, incoming presidents choose their own Secret Service director, and it’s hard to know whether Vice President Kamala Harris or Trump would retain Rowe. “I’m trying to get programs more closely aligned with the mission, getting them out to the field so that they are directly supporting enforcement operations, major criminal investigations and, of course, protective operations,” Rowe told CNN. Radio calls from local police who saw the shooter on the roof shortly before he opened fire never made it to the Secret Service. CNN has previously reported on the strain inside the Secret Service as the agency dramatically ramps up protection during the final stretch of the campaign season.

Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that, if elected to a second term in November, he would immediately fire special counsel Jack Smith, who brought two federal indictments against Trump. "It's so easy — I would fire him within two seconds," said Trump, who added that he got “immunity at the Supreme Court" and called Smith a "crooked person." Firing him as special counsel potentially could end the federal government's prosecution against Trump. Judge Tanya Chutkan allowed the release of hundreds of pages of heavily redacted documents last week that contained evidence the special counsel was using for the prosecution. Last year, Trump warned that Smith and other Justice Department officials would wind up in a mental institution if he's re-elected.

In vulnerable groups, E. coli infection can also lead to serious kidney complications and death. People can become infected after consuming contaminated food or water, or coming into contact with the feces of animals or infected people. E. coli symptoms usually show up three to four days after ingesting the bacteria, but it may take up to 10 days. Once the contaminated food enters the kitchen, it’s also possible for cross-contamination to occur if ingredients are mixed or handled improperly. If you are experiencing diarrhea, don't swim in a public pool to minimize the risk of transmission.

CNN —The Justice Department has reached a settlement for more than $100 million with the two corporations that owned and operated the container ship that destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March. The payment stemming from Thursday’s settlement will go to the US Treasury and to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by the crash or involved in the response, the Justice Department said Thursday. It will not cover any damages for the reconstruction of the bridge, the department said. In its filing last month, the Justice Department said that the “tragedy was entirely avoidable,” pointing to alleged failures in the ship’s infrastructure. Prosecutors wrote that, instead of fixing longstanding problems with their electrical transformer, the companies “jury-rigged their ship” with makeshift braces that repeatedly broke.

And now scientists have confirmed a new one: Diverse firefly species lit up the night during the late Mesozoic. The discovery comes from a fossil of an ancient firefly species that was initially discovered in 2016, trapped in 99 million-year-old Burmese amber from northern Myanmar. The beetle is only the second firefly species from the Mesozoic to be identified. Because only one other Cretaceous firefly species has been identified, “this new species can be used to revisit the (July 2022 study) to better date the evolution of fireflies given the new evidence,” he added. CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to issue an apology to the Native American community for the federal government’s role in the abusive Indian boarding schools that forced Native American children to assimilate over a 150-year period, two sources familiar with the plans said. “The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods,” the White House said Thursday. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the impact of the federal boarding school policies. The department issued a final report this summer confirming at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. At least 18,000 children were taken from their families and forced to attend more than 400 Indian boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories between 1819 and 1969.

It’s so easy,” Trump said when asked by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt whether he would “pardon yourself” or “fire Jack Smith.”“I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump said. But Trump has suggested on multiple occasions he would weaponize the justice system against his political rivals if reelected. Trump, who frequently rails against Smith on the campaign trail, told Breitbart last July that he “wouldn’t keep” the special counsel if he were reelected. “I wouldn’t keep him,” Trump said when asked if he would fire Smith. O’Connor set a deadline of Friday for the administration to explain its use of so-called DEI policies in that program. The diversity language used in the Boeing criminal plea deal has been around since at least 2018 – during the Trump administration, according to a person familiar with the policy. Still, it has become a key holdup as O’Connor mulls whether to approve the plea deal. Now, the court battle playing out in Texas will decide whether to allow Boeing to plead guilty as part of a deal with the Justice Department to resolve a criminal investigation stemming from plane crashes that killed 346 people. The issue first arose at an October 11 hearing in Fort Worth, where O’Connor worked through the routine details of the plea deal before taking a sharp detour to ask why the Justice Department included DEI considerations in choosing a monitor.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. Buttigieg said there are investigations into other airlines, although he said that “American Airlines appear to be one of the worst offenders.”“The problems that we have uncovered in our investigation are not confined to one airline,” Buttigieg said. But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. CNN —The federal government is slapping American Airlines with a $50 million fine after a multi-agency investigation uncovered repeat violations of the rules designed to protect airline passengers who use wheelchairs. The investigation by the Department of Transportation aided by the Justice Department’s civil rights division found that American made “numerous serious violations” of disabled passenger rules between 2019 and 2023. “These problems are not unique to American Airlines, and allegations of wheelchair mishandling and inadequate wheelchair assistance are far too common,” said the Department of Transportation announcement. “DOT has active investigations into similar violations at other US airlines.”Buttigieg said the fine is the largest ever of its type. The fire began burning in the Waikato wetland on October 21, 2024. Fire and Emergency New ZealandThe blaze poses a major risk to the wetland ecosystem, an important habitat that’s found in few other places, experts say. But even before the blaze, the Waikato wetland, like many other unique habitats in New Zealand, was at risk due to environmental degradation and the climate crisis. But when these carbon sinks come under threat, that stored carbon can be released back into the environment. As the fire burns it’s too soon to assess the extent of its damage or impact on the ecosystem, Jones told RNZ.
