Arkansas is “the reddest state not only in the South but in the entire nation.” So declared the chairman of the state GOP at the 2020 Republican National Convention, just before the Arkansas delegation cast its votes for Donald Trump. Arkansas went for Mr. Trump by nearly 2 to 1 in both 2016 and 2020. Both of its U.S. senators and all four representatives are Republicans. In November, Republicans added to their already comfortable majorities in the state House and Senate. In that same election, Sarah Huckabee Sanders trounced her Democratic opponent and was elected governor.
The video, which has nearly 60,000 likes, is among a proliferation of TikTok posts tagged with the names of semaglutide weight-loss drugs, including Wegovy and Ozempic. "What drives the video to go viral is if you can generate some kind of discussion," he told Insider. Unlike official ads, partnerships, or promotions, TikTok posts receive little oversight from government agencies or medical boards. All four said the TikTok posts are driving an influx of patients to their clinics. Oden told Insider that her videos are "drumming up quite a bit of new business" among patients of all ages.
Investors should sell Dillard's after the department store chain's disappointing quarterly results, JPMorgan said. Analyst Matthew Boss downgraded the Arkansas-based retailer to underweight from neutral, saying there's trouble ahead for the retailer after its fourth-quarter results missed JPMorgan's expectations. Dillard's shares outperformed the past several years. In 2022, the stock advanced more than 30%, far outpacing a 19% decline in the S & P 500. The analyst's forward model shows a 21% earnings per share decline in 2023, and a 9% sequential decline in 2024.
The aggressive legislative push comes as battles over gender and sexuality increasingly are being fought in U.S. classrooms, courtrooms and political campaigns. Republicans including former President Donald Trump have embraced restricting trans rights ahead of the 2024 White House race, a push that trans advocates fear will harm transgender children. Gender-affirming care covers a variety of treatments, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and, in exceedingly rare cases for trans people under 18, surgery. But many opponents of trans rights believe that the sex assigned at birth is immutable and distrust the prevailing opinions of medical associations with specialties in pediatrics, endocrinology and mental health. Governors in South Dakota and Utah have already signed into law gender-affirming care bans that state legislatures passed this year.
ET, the yield on the 10-year Treasury was last down by almost three basis points to 3.6088%. U.S. Treasury yields fell on Thursday as investors digested comments from Federal Reserve speakers and assessed the outlook for the economy. Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicated on Wednesday that interest rates could be increased by more than investors are expecting. This echoed the tone struck by other Fed speakers, including Chairman Jerome Powell and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, earlier this week. The Fed has hiked interest rates eight times since March 2022 as part of its efforts to slow the economy and lower inflation.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Wednesday talked tough on inflation, warning that the fight is not over and could result in higher interest rates than markets are anticipating. Consequently, he said the Fed needs to maintain its current plan of action, which has seen eight interest rate hikes since March 2022. "We are seeing that effort begin to pay off, but we have farther to go," Waller told the Arkansas State University Agribusiness Conference in prepared remarks. "And, it might be a long fight, with interest rates higher for longer than some are currently expecting. But I will not hesitate to do what is needed to get my job done."

A GOP Arkansas bill targeting drag is so confusing it may not even apply to most drag performances, according to a constitutional expert. According to an Arkansas drag queen, the bill would severely impact the LGBTQ+ community. If enacted, it would classify a drag performances and places that host them as "adult-oriented" — like adult video stores and strip clubs. Arkansas drag queen MD Hunter has been "on the front lines" fighting against SB43On January 19, Arkansas drag queen MD Hunter gave a testimony before the Arkansas Senate about SB43. Despite the confusing nature of the bill, drag advocates are worried about how it could be applied.
— One of Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ first acts as Arkansas governor was to ban most state agencies from using the gender-neutral term Latinx, tapping into a debate that’s divided Hispanics along generational lines. Sanders’ order adds to the debate over a word that’s found little widespread support among Latinos and even prompted backlash from some Democrats. The Log Cabin Republicans, which represents LGBT members of the party, praised Sanders’ order. I’ve never met someone who says ‘thy.’”Hernandez called Sanders’ order “an attempt to erase” the LGBTQ Latino community. Castillo Reyes uses both Latinx and “Latine,” another gender-neutral term that’s been used by some in the Latino community to describe their ethnic identity.

The warrant also indicated that the Justice Department was investigating whether Trump violated three federal laws, including the Espionage Act, related to the handling of national security information. Here are some possibilities:The investigations conclude with no charges filedIn the US's 250-year history, no ex-commander in chief has ever faced criminal charges. In all, the former president, if convicted, would be facing up to 33 years of incarceration, according to legal experts. That begs the question: If Trump is charged, convicted, and winds up in prison, can he still run for president in 2024? He made headlines during his presidency for wondering why he couldn't have "my guys" at the "Trump Justice Department" do his bidding.

“I’ll get 218,” McCarthy told CNN, referring to the votes he’d need to become House speaker. Video Ad Feedback Bash asks Pelosi if McCarthy has what it takes to be House Speaker. “I’m not going to talk about hypotheticals,” said Biggs, who lost his conference’s nomination to become speaker last month after securing 31 votes. But McCarthy’s detractors said it’s an issue very much still on the table and think he may end up needing to embrace it if he still doesn’t have the speaker votes by January 3. But he refused to rule out a scenario where his caucus would help elect the next speaker if McCarthy couldn’t get the votes.
Meanwhile, Walmart sales were up over 8% in the quarter and the retailer raised its full-year outlook. Walmart said its success was driven by two factors: its robust grocery business, and an influx of higher-income shoppers in its aisles. That trend began earlier this year as rising inflation nudged wealthier shoppers away from their usual grocery stores and toward Walmart locations across the country. And as upper middle-class shoppers trade down to Walmart's grocery aisles, they may get curious about the rest of Walmart's offerings, Wall Street analysts predict. Walmart is winning the grocery warsBut it's not just wealthier shoppers that are driving Walmart's dominance over Target — it's groceries, too.
