Google chief evangelist and “father of the internet” Vint Cerf has a message for business executives looking to rush business deals around chat artificial intelligence: "Don’t." Cerf pleaded with attendees at a Mountain View conference on Monday not to scramble to invest in conversational AI just because "it’s a hot topic." "There’s an ethical issue here that I hope some of you will consider," Cerf told the conference crowd Monday. He’s known as one of the “Fathers of the Internet” because he co-designed some of the architecture used to build the foundation of the internet. Cerf warned against the temptation to invest just because th technology is “really cool, even though it doesn’t work quite right all the time."
The FBI says its agents thwarted a plan to take out Maryland's power grid. The FBI said the people accused of planning the attack blabbed to an FBI informant online. The FBI alleges that starting in September of last year, Russell encouraged the informant to plot their own infrastructure attack before including the informant in his planned attack on the Maryland electrical grid. The FBI alleges that Clendaniel was brought in on the plan in January 2023, telling the informant she wanted to "accomplish something worthwhile" before her death. Clendaniel said the plot would be "legendary" if they pulled it off, the FBI alleges in the affidavit.
The event may have created a compelling entry point for investors who have been on the sidelines of the long-term shift to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are becoming much more popular in the U.S. but still make up a small portion of automobiles on the roads. Cutting prices certainly caught the eye of consumers and boosted interest in Tesla vehicles, according to data from Edmunds. And, there are still issues with electric vehicles that make them impractical for large groups of consumers, said Mike Ward, an analyst at The Benchmark Company. There’s also a huge potential in firms that make batteries, key parts of electric vehicles that are also seeing surging share prices.
After the worst yearly performance ever in 2022 , the standard portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds had a solid rebound in the first month of the new year. The gain was just below the 6.3% total return of the S & P 500 in the same timeframe, recouping losses from December. "We view the rally as sentiment-driven, given how bearish consensus was on 1H23 heading into this year," said Subramanian. .SPX YTD mountain spx ytd Rebound rally The sharp rebound in January was led by the worst-performing sectors in 2022. That's a drastic difference from last year, when both stocks and bonds fell, slamming investors who used the assets to balance their portfolios.
AMD shares popped about 3%. On Wall Street, several analysts reiterated AMD shares as a buy despite the continued overhangs in the chipmaking industry, and project upside for the stock. Goldman Sachs also maintained a buy rating on AMD, saying that despite broader market challenges, the company is on track towards a positive market share trajectory. 'Partly cloudy' results Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore reiterated a hold rating on the stock, citing its "partially cloudy" fourth-quarter results. AMD shares have benefited from January's market and tech shares rally, jumping 16.03% since the start of 2023.
Sadaram used the BRRRR method, which may be becoming less viable in certain markets. The BRRRR method — that's buy, rehab, rent, refinance, repeat — is a tried and true real-estate investing method that's helped countless investors scale up their portfolios. Federal Reserve Bank of St. LouisFalling home prices and rents make for a daunting environment for real-estate investors, especially those looking to scale up using strategies like the BRRRR method. But Sadaram is still convinced the BRRRR method is the best way to build a portfolio, even in today's market. Sadaram's best advice for using the BRRRR method in today's marketThere are, however, some things investors need to keep in mind amid the bearish environment, he said.
Next week is Groundhog Day, not to mention the 30 th anniversary of the theatrical release of "Groundhog Day." The ensuing market retreat culminated in the October low at more than a 25% decline from the S & P's record high. Inflation is decidedly in retreat, fourth-quarter GDP was slow-ish but solidly positive, Fed officials did nothing to push back against market expectations for a quarter-point bump in rates next week. But none of the interim S & P 500 rallies in that period made it as far above the 200-day moving average as the index currently is. Yet even with obligatory macro scares and market switchbacks along the way, it doesn't mean investors necessarily remain stuck in the same old doom loop.
Scandinavians likely developed Runic writing after first meeting ancient Romans, but it's not clear how old it is. It is covered in primitive runic writing, and archaeologists believe it dates back to between AD 1 and AD 250. However, one word, that can be made out clearly on the stone, could give the stone another meaning. That's when, inspired by Latin writing, early Scandinavians might have started developing their own alphabet, archaeologists say in the press release. By analyzing the stone, Zilmer thinks archeologists can learn more about the early development of runic writing and how they have evolved over time.
There's a bullish case on stocks that's not gained much traction yet. With another 4%-5% upside in the S & P 500 , the thesis would demand serious attention. A Fed pause? But this time, the S & P 500 had fallen 20% by the time the 10-to-2-year Treasury curve inverted, whereas in past cycles stocks were near a high. The S & P 500 probably needs to reach 4300 — up another 7.5% — to make a solid case for the bear market being over, says John Kolovos of Macro Risk Advisors.
Jan 13 (Reuters) - Crypto.com said on Friday it would be reducing about 20% of its workforce, as cryptocurrency exchanges face industry-wide challenges brought on by the collapse of FTX last year. A source told Reuters last week that Genesis, too, had cut jobs, equating to 30% of its workforce. Th recent FTX collapse "significantly damaged trust in the industry," Crypto.com Chief Executive Officer Kris Marszalek said in a statement. The collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX was the biggest in string of big crypto-related failures in 2022. It sparked a cryptocurrency rout and has left an estimated 1 million creditors facing losses of billions of dollars.
Data providers that automatically pull from companies' quarterly releases in calculating trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) sometimes bring in numbers that are not the ones used by Wall Street. However, for trailing P/E purposes, the adjusted earnings-per-share number is usually the one to use. The one-time items are just that, they can change from quarter to quarter or not occur at all. That's why instead of using trailing earnings as our yardstick, we use forward earnings expectations. Amazon 's (AMZN) advertising business is emerging as a primary competitor to Alphabet (GOOGL) and Meta Platform s (META), according to a new Wall Street survey. While encouraged by the growth in its ad business, we still don't think the tech and e-commerce giant has done enough to cut costs to protect margins. In the survey, 50 senior U.S. ad buyers said they anticipate Amazon's ad market share to rise from 6% in 2022 to 7% in 2024. Moreover, 40% of ad buyers believe Amazon will "emerge as a meaningful ad platform alongside GOOG and META." The analysts cited lower revenue from the company's cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Some people who worked there were obsessed with Disney, but I hadn't even heard of most of the Disney movies. At the time, I was eager to travel to Hong Kong and Taiwan, so I wanted to work a 3-month seasonal job to help me pay for that. I decided to try to work at the same place my brother worked a few years prior, Disneyland Paris. Djeneba, 26, worked a seasonal job at Disneyland Paris so she could earn extra money to travel the world. But it's an easy seasonal job, and by the end of it, you'll understand the Disney magic or, at least whatever it means to you.
Stocks may be careening toward their worst year since 2008, but some names are completing a remarkable run after doubling or more in 2022. In 2022, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost 8.4%, while the S & P 500 shed 19.2%. These stocks are up more than 100% this year, and include tankers for petroleum products, energy companies such as coal firms, and biotech and pharmaceutical names, according to CNBC. Ardmore Shipping and Scorpio Tankers were the top tanker stocks, both up about 316% for the year. Energy companies came out on top in 2022 following a surge in oil and gas prices — which market participants say will remain elevated given expectations of tight supply ahead.

Driving the action were several key economic reports, including the November ADP employment and nonfarm payrolls reports and the October personal spending report. The comments came after a softer-than-expected ADP employment report, but before a stronger-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report. With these kinds of mixed signals, expect more market choppiness as investors remain on the hunt for more definitive signs that the Fed is winning its war on inflation and can therefore definitively ease up on their hawkish stance. Initial jobless claims for the week ending Nov. 26 were 225,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the prior week and below expectations of 235,000. Finally, on Friday the all-important nonfarm payrolls report was released, indicating a 263,000 payrolls increase in November, above the 200,000 expected.

US adults carrying loaded handguns on a daily basis nearly doubled from 2015 to 2019, a new study found. They applied that nationally representative data to the estimated 53 million US adults who owned handguns in 2019, concluding that about 16 million adults carried a loaded handgun at least once a month, and 6 million did so daily. They bought about 18.9 million guns in 2021, a record year surpassed only by 2020, according to estimates by The Trace, a publication dedicated to investigating gun violence. "Between increases in the number of people who own handguns and the number of people who carry every day, there has been a striking increase in handgun carrying in the US," Rowhani-Rahbar said in a press release. "In light of that ruling, our study reinforces the importance of studying the implications of handgun carrying for public health and public safety," Rowhani-Rahbar said.
Developed countries at the UN COP 27 summit agreed to create a "loss and damage" climate change fund. The fund would compensate less developed countries bearing the brunt of climate change. It also adds a stipulation that developing countries cannot sue developed countries for these payments. COP 27, or the Conference of the Parties, is an annual summit put on by the UN to address the adverse impacts of climate change. Since the 1992 convention, developing countries have demanded that a "loss and damage fund," facilitated by the UN, be implemented.

CNN —A university in Uganda has withdrawn a requirement for female nursing and midwifery students to take a pregnancy test before sitting their exams, after facing a backlash. Female nursing and midwifery students being asked to take a pregnancy test, at their own cost as a pre-condition for sitting exams is peak nonsense!!! !”Dr. Githinji Gitahi, CEO of non-profit Amref Health Africa, responded by tweeting: “What? Because pregnancy has what to do with exams? I wish you all the best in the forthcoming exams,” he continued.
The stock market has experienced a series of bear market rallies this year. Demmert said the bear market is now its "third and final phase." It is now in its 11 th month of a typical 12–15-month cycle, according to Demmert — indicating that a bottom could be close. "It's sort of an all-weather company at this point because they have the dominant exposure in that market globally. "That's where people go where they think it's safe, such as Google [parent Alphabet ] and Microsoft in the tech space.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported fiscal third-quarter results that missed lowered expectations on after the closing bell Tuesday. Revenue in AMD's third-quarter increased 29% to $5.57 billion, missing estimates of $5.62 billion. Data center revenue remains resilient thanks to strong North American cloud demand, where AMD is strongest, while Embedded segment sales benefited from strong end market demand. While the long-term drivers of growth — cloud computing, gaming, and digitization — appear fully intact, the near-term issues must be resolved. Gaming revenue was $1.6 billion, up 14% year over year and also in line with estimates driven by higher semi-custom product sales.
