REUTERS/Staff/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsA look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Kevin BucklandThe dominating theme in global financial markets is once again central bank policy, and equity investors in particular are worried. Even ultra-resilient Japanese stocks seem to have finally succumbed, with the Nikkei threatening to snap an eight-day winning streak. Traders have preferred to trust the data over protestations from ECB officials that the tightening cycle may not be over ahead of next week's policy meeting. German industrial production figures are due today, with the euro bloc's giant threatening to slip back into recession.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 7 (Reuters) - Charter Communications (CHTR.O) Chief Executive Chris Winfrey said he has a sense of urgency to resolve a distribution dispute with Walt Disney (DIS.N), in remarks on Thursday at a tech conference in San Francisco. Charter is locked in a distribution battle with Disney as the second-largest U.S. cable company negotiates with the media conglomerate over how much its channels are worth and how to package them. Such "carriage disputes" are commonplace in the media world, though this negotiation may shape the future of television in the streaming era. Disney issued a statement saying it “stands ready” to resolve the carriage dispute, and “do what’s in the best interests” of Charter’s customers.

De Graaf, a 30-year veteran of the European Commission, was tasked with resurrecting the EU office in the Bay Area. The generative AI boomGenerative AI was a virtually foreign concept when de Graaf arrived in San Francisco last September. In June, the European Parliament cleared a major step in passing the EU AI Act, which would represent the EU's package of AI regulations. Tech companies that have for years criticized the EU for overly aggressive regulations are now asking, "Why is it taking you so long?" The rapidly changing landscape of generative AI makes it tricky for the EU to quickly formulate regulations.

Kin Cheung | Pool | Getty ImagesLONDON — Two countries are jockeying for position as Europe's capital for artificial intelligence. So, who is leading the race to take Europe's AI crown? The European Union has its AI Act, which is set to be the first comprehensive set of laws focusing on artificial intelligence in the West. In contrast the EU's AI Act could make France "less attractive" for investment in artificial intelligence given that it lays down "a burdensome regulatory regime" for AI, Tanna said. Alexandre Lebrun, CEO of Nabla, an AI "copilot" for doctors, said the U.K. and France are "probably even" when it comes to attractiveness for starting an AI company.

The FTC is investigating OpenAI over its lack of transparency regarding data and privacy. The FTC is demanding Open AI detail how and where it collects data. The investigation adds to growing legal challenges filed against the AI company behind ChatGPT. Like the FTC's current probe, many existing legal challenges to OpenAI concern the company's collection of data to train ChatGPT. But Altman has yet to comment on any of the recent legal challenges aimed at his company.

A key driver of economic growth in Israel, the tech sector saw its funding hit last year by the global economic slowdown. "The big inventors are the warriors of democracy," Margalit told Reuters on the sidelines of a JVP Climate Tech conference. While the tech sector needs a stable Israeli economy, the economy needs a strong tech sector, which accounts for 14% of jobs and almost a fifth of gross domestic product. The fall off in tech funding has been a major factor in the weakening of the shekel , analysts say.

A Berkeley professor said AI developers are "running out of text" to train chatbots at a UN summit. But Russell's insights point toward another potential vulnerability: the shortage of text to train these datasets. A study conducted last November by Epoch, a group of AI researchers, estimated that machine learning datasets will likely deplete all "high-quality language data" before 2026. Language data in "high-quality" sets comes from sources such as "books, news articles, scientific papers, Wikipedia, and filtered web content," according to the study. Russell added that while there are possible explanations for such a purchase, "the natural inference is that there isn't enough high-quality public data left."

They named drug discovery and the emerging 'techbio' sector as areas of interest. COVID-19 fueled huge interest in health-tech startups, with VCs pouring a record $25.1 billion into health and biotech startups in 2021. Startups in the space are bringing new applications of tech to fields such as drug discovery, bioengineering, and patient care. VCs are still betting on drug discoveryEven though funding into drug discovery startups has significantly stalled this year, at just $126 million, startup valuations have picked up since 2022. Health-tech VCs won't splurge cashWhile COVID-19 did give healthtech startups a chance at the spotlight, they were still overshadowed by their counterparts in fintech and software-as-a-service.
