Yet many of the students enrolled in her ethics and technology course decided to introduce themselves with ChatGPT. AdvertisementSecond week of the semester and I've already had students use (and own up to using) ChatGPT to write their first assignment: "briefly introduce yourself and say what you're hoping to get out of this class". AdvertisementThe calculator argument — why ChatGPT is not just another problem-solving toolMany of the commenters who defended using AI likened ChatGPT for writing to using a calculator for math problems. OpenAI even partnered with Arizona State University to offer students and faculty full access to ChatGPT Enterprise for tutoring, coursework, research, and more. A professor in another post that received over 600 upvotes said that ChatGPT was "ruining" their love of teaching.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the share of Americans who were absent from work because of child care difficulties matched the all-time record for August. At the same time, employment in child care services has not been nearly enough to match the demand, according to Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, who highlighted the statistic in a note following Friday’s job report. The issue largely stems from the havoc created by the pandemic, which prompted many child care facilities to shut down, Pollak said. Consumer payments for child care are up at least 32% since 2019, a recent Bank of America study found. Child care advocates say that almost 10% of the state’s day care sites or home-based programs have shuttered since the pandemic.

Many recent candidates for high office, by contrast, report millions in income and assets from multiple sources on their forms. Walz reported a $210,287 income from his job as governor of Minnesota from January 2023 through August of this year and a bank account with between $15,000 and $50,000 in cash. But Walz does have a few retirement savings accounts. In addition, Walz will be eligible for Social Security benefits and a pension as a former member of the US House of Representatives. “They did (a) story that said he’s actually richer than his statement says, because he has — and I quote, like this is an evil thing — ‘a defined benefit pension plan.’ That is my wish for every American to have a defined benefit pension plan,” he said.

Then again — how could I miss my own first day of school as an educator? As an educator myself, I remember bonding with certain parent volunteers who would share information about kids. My relationship with her was on a great foot, and for the first time, it didn't matter so much that I didn't get to meet my kids' teacher for the first few months of school.

I'm a high school English teacher, and I recently had a parent say to me, "ChatGPT can produce a decent essay on just about any topic in 3.4 seconds. Like most good questions posed to humans, my response requires more than 3.4 seconds to create and read, but it is one I'd like every parent of a high school student to consider as we head back into another academic year. An entire essay produced in 3.4 seconds? That's almost faster than I can type "3.4 seconds," and I am not above marveling at the technology that makes this possible. Studies suggest that writing by hand prompts distinct and more complex brain connections that are fundamental in encoding new information.

I have very close friends in Australia, so I decided to move there to be with them in January. There are some cultural differences between the UK and Australia, but they've mostly felt minor. I'm unbelievably happy with my life changeI feel like I've embraced and accepted myself instead of trying to fit into a box. With the time difference, cost, and time required for travel, Australia can feel far away from everything, but so far, my life here outweighs this.

Our oldest is taking advantage of early college programsRecently, I attended an orientation with my 16-year-old for her early college program. I wasn't familiar with early college programs, but they've become popular in our local area, both for the support they can offer teens transitioning to college and the cost savings they can offer. Students in the program take an additional year of high school that's a full college course load and then graduate from high school with up to 60 college credits, sometimes enough for a full associate degree. Along with the early college program, I took the small amount of savings we did have for her and opened a 529 education account. The catch is that all the money has to be used for educational purposes, but things such as trade school and school expenses qualify.

New York CNN —Meta’s Oversight Board has found that the phrase “From the River to the Sea,” used to express Palestinian support, did not break the company’s hate speech policies. The Board said it reviewed three cases involving the use of “From the River to the Sea” on Facebook and said that all appeals to remove the content were closed without human review. Those users then appealed to the Board, which exists for users to challenge Meta’s appeals process on Facebook, Instagram or Threads. In Germany, using the slogan “From the river to the sea” is now a criminal offense. The slogan used in the cases had wide reach through Meta’s platforms.

This summer, three generations of my family — from my grandmother to my mom and aunts down to me — got together at my grandmother's house to put on a two-day garage sale. We spent a lot of time organizing the garage sale togetherAll three generations of my family combined our things for the two-day garage sale, where we grouped items, laid them out on tables, and invited neighbors and passersby to peruse. The garage sale took massive organization between the family to pick a weekend and gather all the items together. Each family member could preshop the sale if one member got rid of something another wanted. It helped us connect with the community, give our items new life, and clear up space in our homes.

At the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Rep. Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., was met with thunderous applause as he proudly introduced transgender advocate Sarah McBride. “She is right now the first trans person ever to address a national convention,” Maloney boasted. But at this year’s Democratic convention in Chicago, trans people were notably absent from the stage. To some trans Americans, the omission did not go unnoticed. Harris, who has actively supported gay rights throughout her career, is also seen by advocates as having one of the most, if not the most, LGBTQ-friendly policy record of any presidential candidate.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has clawed back billions of dollars that countless veterans were given as incentives to leave the military, including when it needed to downsize, according to new data obtained by NBC News. Disabled veterans have been told in the last 12 fiscal years to return nearly $3 billion in special separation pay — lump-sum incentives that were offered when the U.S. had to reduce its active-duty force or release slightly injured service members, the data shows. The justification of the recoupment rule carried over in the 1990s when other forms of special separation payments — unrelated to disabilities — were authorized. Those payments, including the Special Separation Benefit (SSB), were designed instead to help the Defense Department manage its force size. He was told to pay back the money in 2017 after he filed for VA disability for PTSD and other conditions.

A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. At least, that’s what the designers Tyson Strang and Tatiana Baibabaeva wanted to do when they moved to Sencelles, Majorca, in 2020. The pair, who met in Kyrgyzstan two decades ago, had previously lived for 15 years in New York City, where in 2017 they founded the ceramics line Terra Coll Home. Before turning to pottery, Baibabaeva, 38, had worked in fashion and Strang, 45, had been a teacher; when they relocated to Spain, they fully merged their creative, personal and professional lives, raising two children together, developing a rustic-minded interiors business and even sharing an email address, from which they explain, “For us, ‘rustic design’ means unifying the interior of a space with its landscape by using the raw materials from the surrounding land as the primary construction and design elements.”
