Tech stocks generally carry more risk than other stocks, but they also promise significantly more growth. Throughout much of the 21st century's historic bull market, tech stocks have been at the forefront of the rise, with the biggest tech stocks all outperforming the S&P 500 over the past five and 10 years. There's a fundamental reason why tech stocks tend to attract more investor demand than other kinds of equities. This has added to optimism that tech stocks, in particular stocks which have already seen big gains, will still be a safer longer-term bet," Streeter says. If an investor wants the highest possible appreciation, they would do well to devote a segment of their holdings to tech stocks.

Since ETFs offer built-in diversification and don't require large amounts of capital in order to invest in a range of stocks, they are a good way to get started. Some of the best $0 commission trading platforms include the below: TD AmeritradeAlly InvestE*TRADEVanguardCharles SchwabFidelity Though ETFs tracking the S&P 500 are some of the most popular, be aware that very few ETFs track the S&P 500 as a whole, rather just components of the index. Fear of the stock market, an over-reliance on Roth retirement accounts, and savings mistakes are the biggest issues. We talked to a few financial planners about money mistakes they see millennials making, and some advice on how to change things. Roth retirement accounts are a useful way to save for retirement, but they might not be the best option for millennials. Money you put into a Roth account is taxed now, whereas money you put into a 401(k) or traditional IRA is taxed in retirement. You can request that your employer deposit 30%, for example, into your savings account and the remaining 70% into your checking account.

I started by asking a financial advisor for help, then opening a SEP IRA and funding it little by little. Every time someone brought up the idea of a retirement account, I rolled my eyes and tuned them out. I asked for helpWhen I decided to start saving seriously for retirement, I didn't know what to do first. I considered all my retirement account optionsI was always so intimidated by how many retirement account options there were. This allowed me to build up year one of my SEP IRA and play a bit of catch-up.
From an early age, my dad taught me that I had to be responsible for my own finances, especially when it came to retirement. Because of this advice, I've taken seriously the task of tucking away money for my own nest egg. Saving in my solo 401(k) accountSince I opened a solo 401(k) a few years back, I've been trying to squirrel away as much money as I can. If you're unfamiliar, solo 401(k) accounts are designed for business owners with only one employee — themselves. What's particularly neat about solo 401(k) accounts is that as the business owner, you can make contributions as both an employer and an employee.
