Brokerage TD Cowen lowered its U.S. holiday spending estimate to 2% to 3% growth, from 4% to 5%, as it forecast flat Black Friday traffic. With many consumers squeezed by persistent inflation and high interest rates, U.S. holiday spending is expected to rise at the slowest pace in five years. A record 130.7 million people are expected to shop in stores and online in the U.S. on Black Friday this year, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates. In France, Italy, and Spain, most shoppers planned to buy clothing on Black Friday, with electronic goods coming second, according to a PwC survey. Thanksgiving Day discounts online peaked at about 28% for toys, while electronics had discounts as steep as 27%, Adobe said.

Where prices fell in October 2023 — in one chart

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesInflation continued its broad moderation in October, down significantly from pandemic-era highs that hadn't been seen in more than 40 years. Why some prices are deflatingwatch nowSome prices, like those for airline tickets and eggs, have also declined off record-high levels. Egg and airline ticket prices are down about 22% and 13% in the past year, according to CPI data. How measurement quirks affect pricesSome of the declines are due partly to measurement quirks. Consumers get more for roughly the same amount of money, which shows up as a price decline in the CPI data.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

This year, officials in the South Korean capital said they would work with police, emergency services and local officials to ensure "not a single person gets hurt" during Halloween celebrations. The plan unveiled this week covers just Seoul, rather than the entire nation, he added. The Seoul anniversary has unnerved authorities elsewhere in the run-up to this year’s celebrations. "Officials have grown fearful of a disastrous crowd crush similar to the one in the Itaewon district in Seoul, South Korea," Shibuya city officials said in a statement. The safety campaign has involved a ban on street drinking over the Halloween weekend, while videos posted on social media urge: "On Halloween night, everyone should stay away from Shibuya."

And then, somehow, more than two million dimes, worth nearly a quarter of a million dollars. The four thieves who federal prosecutors say were behind the robberies didn’t use the most sophisticated tactics. Four men now face several criminal charges, including theft of government money and robbery interfering with instate commerce, according to court documents unsealed last week. The defendants have “developed into a bona fide cargo theft and robbery crew” that used multiple vehicles to break into cargo trailers across the city this spring, federal prosecutors said in a court filing on Monday. In addition to refrigerators, tequila and dimes, they also stole — and in some cases tried to resell — televisions and frozen meat, shrimp and crab legs.

Many of CTL’s clients are museums looking to restore works by a single artist, the video art pioneer Nam June Paik, who died in 2006. Known for his sculptures and room-size installations of flickering CRT monitors, Paik began visiting the shop in the 1970s on breaks from his studio in nearby SoHo. Paik’s work was on view, along with video works from dozens of other artists, in “Signals,” a sweeping exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York earlier this year. Many pieces in the show, such as those in the video collectives section, played on boxy Sony CRT monitors, long favored by artists for their austere, stackable design, and which stopped being produced in the 2000s. “I had to tell security, ‘Pretend these are Donald Judds,’ because they’re basically priceless at this point.”

A woman pushes shopping carts during a sales event on Thanksgiving day at Walmart in Westbury, New York, U.S., November 28, 2019. In recent years, retailers like Amazon and Walmart have sought to boost their bottom lines and spread out demand by hosting holiday shopping events online in early October. Inflation remains a top concern for holiday shoppers, according to a KPMG survey, leading some to seek out deals on possible gifts. Walmart, which revealed discounts for its four-day Holiday Kickoff event at midday on Monday, posted deals on Dyson vacuums, HP (HPE.N) laptops and Apple (AAPL.O) products, much like Amazon and Target. The world's biggest maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions will announce its third-quarter preliminary earnings results on Wednesday. It compares with an operating profit of 10.85 trillion won in the September quarter last year. Analysts said Samsung's cuts to chip production also hurt economies of scale, lifting the costs of making chips. Rival Micron Technology (MU.O) forecast a quarterly loss last month, triggering concerns of a sluggish recovery in the memory chip maker's end markets such as data centres.

CNN —Matt Gaetz is a product of America’s broken information environment. But as the media landscape has dramatically shifted, particularly in the right-wing information space, so have the power dynamics in Washington. The gravity actually rests in the hands of high-profile media personalities — many of whom are not incentivized by unity and compromise, but feed off conflict and division. And these media personalities have birthed and empowered people like Gaetz. The right-wing media machine — comprised of Fox News, talk radio, social media personalities, and a constellation of blusterous websites — have made stars out of attention-hungry politicians.
