Nearly two years into NIL, its impact on college sports is starting to show during March Madness. Most of the teams the Final Four — in both men's and women's basketball — have strong NIL backings. Changes to NIL and the transfer portal have created a "perfect storm that's allowed some schools to bank talent," one expert said. LSU's Angel Reese has the most NIL deals of any college baller, Just Women's Sports reported based on data from SponsorUnited, which tracks NIL deals. "The transfer portal and NIL happening at same time, to me, that's the perfect storm that's allowed some schools to bank talent," Dosh said.
WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) - A trade group representing rideshare and delivery companies such as Uber (UBER.N) and Lyft (LYFT.O) is asking President Joe Biden's nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Labor, Julie Su, to explain her position on worker-classification rules. The group earlier this month said Su's record is "troubling" and called for a "meticulous review" of her record in the Senate confirmation process. The Department of Labor in October proposed a rule that would make it more difficult for companies to treat workers as independent contractors, which would shake up ride-hailing, delivery and other industries that rely on gig workers. The Department of Labor and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) - Rideshare and delivery companies want the Biden administration's nominee for the Department of Labor to clarify her position on an incoming worker-classification rule that could expand workers' rights, a trade group representing the companies said on Monday. The Department of Labor in October proposed a rule that would make it more difficult for companies to treat workers as independent contractors, which would shake up ride-hailing, delivery and other industries that rely on gig workers. Before joining the U.S. Department of Labor, Su was the secretary for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, and before then was California labor commissioner from 2011-2018. A report on her tenure released in May 2013 found that her work resulted in a spike in enforcement activity. "We are taking notes from Zelenskiy," a senior Taiwan security official said, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's strong presence on social media. "We can't even fix sea cables on our own," the official said. "What if one day all 14 of Taiwan's undersea cables connecting us to the outside world break? Taiwan's military has long prepared back-up plans, including a fibre-optic network for communications within Taiwan, satellites, high-frequency radio, and microwave systems. "So the first step (for China) - with about 99 percent likelihood - is to cut our sea cables," Huang said.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the MSU community joined together to support. "Unscrupulous businesses" are accused of selling unlicensed MSU items possibly under the guise of donating proceeds. "They were NOT wearing this sweatshirt design. According to the Detroit Free Press, the original sweatshirt design was that of MSU donor recognition coordinator Andersen Herminia Boyer, who made sweatshirts for herself and other members of her alumni group. "Unscrupulous businesses and individuals have engaged in selling unlicensed apparel and other merchandise.

Feb 22 (Reuters) - The International Skating Union will lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the case of figure skater Kamila Valieva after a Russian investigation found the teenager not guilty of any doping infraction, it said on Wednesday. The ISU said it is seeking a period of ineligibility at CAS's own discretion. "Additionally, CAS is to decide the consequences of the Anti-Doping Rule Violation committed by Kamila Valieva and determine the final results of the Figure Skating Team Event at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games." In her defence, Valieva said the positive test was the result of a mix-up with her grandfather's heart medication. During the Beijing Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that no medals for the team figure skating event would be presented until Valieva's case had been resolved.

In general, investors are relieved that AMD still expects data-center growth in 2023 despite mounting economic pressures. AMD's data-center outlook isn't perfect. For the first quarter, in particular, AMD expects data-center sales to be lower than the $1.7 billion it recorded in the fourth quarter of 2022. The unpleasant PC experience caused AMD's warning about data-center inventory hurdles to raise the Club's eyebrows. AMD expects that continue to again in 2023.
Four people were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of Madison Brooks, a Louisiana State University student who was fatally hit by a car shortly after the suspects dropped her off in an East Baton Rouge subdivision. Lee is Washington's uncle, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said. Carver told investigators that he, his friends and Lee did not know Brooks prior to meeting her at Reggie's, the report said. When they were about to leave, Brooks asked for a ride home, Carver told detectives. He told CBS affiliate WAFB of Baton Rouge that a rape did not occur.

Dec 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to consider how strictly to interpret the landmark Title IX civil rights law's protections for gender equality in college sports in a lawsuit challenging Michigan State University's elimination of its women's swimming and diving team. The high court rejected the university's appeal of a lower-court ruling in favor of former members of the team who say MSU violated Title IX by not providing enough opportunities for women athletes to participate in sports. At issue is how to determine whether a school has met a key benchmark in assessing if it provides equal opportunities to participate under Title IX, the 50-year-old law credited with expanding access to sports for female student-athletes. He said no court had ever held a gap of less than 2% violated the law. In a petition to the Supreme Court, MSU argued the 6th Circuit's approach was "unworkable" and conflicted with how every other federal appeals court that had examined the issued had approached Title IX.
Komatsu CEO: no immediate plan to withdraw from Russia

Komatsu has a manufacturing plant in Yaroslavl, Russia. But various developments could take place as we go forward," Komatsu Chief Executive Hiroyuki Ogawa told reporters in an online interview. "There may come a time when we will need to decide whether or not to withdraw (from Russia). Russia and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) accounted for 7% of Komatsu's heavy machinery sales in the year to end-March 2022. "I don't necessarily think demand in the next business year will be good when compared with this year's," Ogawa said.
The breathtaking win for Japan meant they topped Group E, followed by Spain in second who finished ahead of third-placed Germany only on goal difference. Japan fans were in tears at the end of the match which gives them a chance to go further than they ever have before at a World Cup. "There were many fans who came all the way from Japan, as well as those that stayed behind in Japan," coach Moriyasu said. "We didn't have any danger in the first half, then in the second half, I told them during halftime to be cautious, because they would attack in the second half, they don't have anything to lose," he said. Japan defender Kou Itakura was shown his second yellow card of the tournament and will be suspended for the Croatia match.
DOHA, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu, hailed as a tactical mastermind after the victory over Germany, was left with egg on his face on Sunday after Costa Rica produced a similarly stunning upset to blow World Cup Group E wide open. Although Moriyasu made five changes for the Costa Rica match in a squad rotation ahead of their final group match against Spain, only Ritsu Doan of the substitutes who came on to transform the Germany match was given a start. The Samurai Blue looked clueless as they tried to break down a Costa Rica side determined to avoid further embarrassment and who kept 10 men behind the ball for much of the time. It was Costa Rica's first shot on goal in the entire match but that, ultimately, was more than Japan managed over the 90 minutes. Moriyasu was unapologetic about his team's insipid display only a few days after one of their greatest victories.
Land Minister Won Hee-ryong said that the government would consider deploying military trucks to areas needed for urgent transport. The Korea Oil Station Association is asking gas station owners to secure enough inventory ahead of the strike, an association official said on Wednesday. "We learned some lessons from the last strike," said the official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue. The transport ministry had said some 7,000 people participated in the June strike, while the union said more than 22,000 took part. The Korea International Trade Association, a shippers' body, said on Wednesday that it has created a task force to handle any disruptions and minimise trade damage.
SEOUL, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Unionised truckers in South Korea kicked off their second major strike in less than six months on Thursday, threatening to disrupt manufacturing and fuel supplies in the world's 10th-largest economy. With fuel costs soaring, the truckers are calling on the government to make permanent a minimum-pay system that is due to expire by the end of the year, and to expand benefits for truckers in other industries, including oil tankers. Lead organiser the Cargo Truckers Solidarity Union (CTSU) has warned the strike could stop oil supplies at major refineries and transport at major ports and industrial plants. In June, an eight-day strike by truckers delayed cargo shipments for industries from autos to semiconductors in Asia's fourth-largest economy, costing more than $1.2 billion in lost output and unmet deliveries. The Korea Oil Station Association is asking gas station owners to secure enough inventory ahead of the strike, an association official said earlier.
This is in addition to AMD's multiyear push around data center, a central reason we like the company's long-term prospects despite our more cautious view on chips stocks at present . Its more recent areas of focus — data center and embedded — are holding up for now while there's weakness in parts of the company's consumer-focused end markets. In the second quarter, data center revenue was $1.5 billion, up 83% compared with 2021. As mentioned, AMD expected data center revenue in its current fourth quarter to exceed the $1.6 billion it generated in the three months ended Sept. 24. Intel's next-gen data center chip, called Sapphire Rapids, has faced delays and is now set to launch next year.

He announced pardons for federal cannabis possession and ordered a review of how cannabis is scheduled. While Biden's announcement stopped far short of decriminalization, he outlined three key steps:He's pardoning people federally convicted of simple cannabis possession. Biden's announcement signals that his administration — quiet on cannabis until now — will finally push for federal cannabis reform. Stifel analyst Andrew Partheniou called Biden's announcement "the most important development in US cannabis history," in a Friday morning note. If the government decides to regulate cannabis like a pharmaceutical, that could undermine the recreational cannabis industry as it currently stands.
Kamada and Mitoma strike as Japan breeze past United States
  + stars: | 2022-09-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Jesus Ferreira's early header had sailed over the bar from Sergino Dest's cross in an encouraging start for the United States, but that was to prove a rare sight of goal for Gregg Berhalter's side. Arsenal goalkeeper Turner ensured the United States were not on the end of a heavier defeat with a string of fine saves in the second half. The 28-year-old kept out a 55th minute effort from Junya Ito before denying Kamada a second of the game 10 minutes later. But there was nothing Turner could do to prevent Mitoma from adding Japan's second in the 88th minute. The Japanese will be appearing at their seventh consecutive World Cup in November and have been drawn to face Germany, Spain and Costa Rica in the group phase while the United States meet England, Iran and Wales.
