Taipei, Taiwan AP —The United States has approved $2 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, including the first-time delivery to the self-ruled island of an advanced surface-to-air missile defense system, in a move that has drawn China’s criticism. Taiwan’s presidential office on Saturday thanked Washington for greenlighting the potential arms sales. Beijing last week held war games encircling Taiwan for the second time since Lai took office in May. The NASAMS system has been battle-tested in Ukraine and will help to strengthen the Taiwanese army’s air defense capabilities, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said. China’s war games last week were aimed at practicing the “sealing off of key ports and key areas” around Taiwan, according to Chinese officials.

Unlike with the hurricane rumor response page, FEMA did not appear to respond to the rumors on its page for the wildfires. By 2009, Alex Jones, perhaps one of the most widely known modern conspiracy theorists, was promoting the false FEMA camps conspiracy theory and deriding those who attempted to debunk it. The FEMA camps conspiracy theory continued throughout the height of the pandemic after President Joe Biden signed various executive orders regarding vaccinations and testing. Ron DeSantis said the plan was “not necessary” and referred to the vaccination sites as “FEMA camps.”Although the FEMA camp conspiracy theory has been shot down again and again, Aniano believes this won’t be the last of it. “The conspiracy theory, it’s going to come up again,” Aniano said.

Trump has waded into deep blue territory to boost his candidacy among Black and Latino voters. He has sought to use this issue to cut into Harris' support among the very groups she'll need to win the presidency. This includes Black voters, who for decades have overwhelmingly backed Democratic politicians, and Latino voters, who have become less Democratic as a whole in recent years. A recent GenForward survey showed that 26% of young Black men backed Trump, compared to 58% who supported Harris. During a June debate with President Joe Biden, Trump said migrants were taking "Black jobs" and "Hispanic jobs."

In what some analysts are calling the “show me the money” quarter, most of the major US tech titans will report earnings during Halloween week. “Tech companies have been spending billions on AI like kids in a candy store,” said David Laut, chief investment officer at Abound Financial. “Now investors want to see what they’re getting for their money.”Earnings season for tech got off to a strong start Wednesday evening when Tesla surprised Wall Street with better-than-expected earnings. The results sent Tesla’s shares surging more than 11% in after-hours trading, potentially setting a positive tone for next week’s parade of tech earnings. The art market is in a correction as big spenders fade
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The number of wealthy collectors surveyed who plan to purchase art in the next year fell to 43% from over half in 2023. The median spending on art by wealthy collectors remains stable at around $50,000 a year, according to the survey. Higher interest rates also raised the opportunity cost of buying art, since wealthy collectors could earn an easy 5% or more from cash and Treasuries. Just as in the classic-car market, the art market is going through a generational shift that's created a mismatch between supply and demand. According to the survey, the high end of the art market, or works priced at $10 million or more, was the strongest before 2022.

Soon after the 2016 coup, Erdogan described Gulen’s network as traitors and “like a cancer”, vowing to root them out wherever they are.
