2 Michigan announced Friday that it has suspended a low-level football program employee a day after disclosing it is under NCAA investigation for allegedly stealing the play-calling signals used by Wolverines opponents. Athletic director Warde Manuel issued a one-sentence statement saying that Connor Stalions had been suspended with pay pending the conclusion of the NCAA investigation. Stalions had not been previously identified by the school but was named in an ESPN report alleging he is a key figure in the probe. The Wolverines (7-0), who started their season with coach Jim Harbaugh serving a university-imposed three-game suspension for a still unresolved NCAA infractions case, play at Michigan State on Saturday. “I do not have any knowledge or information regarding the University of Michigan football program illegally stealing signals, nor have I directed any staff member or others to participate in an off-campus scouting assignment,” Harbaugh said.

The work stoppage targets operations at the MGM Grand Detroit; owned by MGM Resorts International , MotorCity Casino; and Hollywood Casino at Greektown, owned by Penn Entertainment . They are represented by the Detroit Casino Council, which is made up of five unions including the United Auto Workers. MotorCity Casino updated its website showing that high limit table games, poker room and casino valet were closed – as well as its spa and some restaurants and bars. The DCC argues casino workers agreed to a three-year contract during the pressure-packed earlier days of the Covid pandemic. "In 2022, the Detroit casino industry generated $2.27 billion in gaming revenue and is on track for another record-breaking year in 2023.

Nearly 12 months later, coach Kyle Shanahan can't even imagine what life would be like without McCaffrey driving the Niners offense. The midseason addition of McCaffrey last year immediately transformed the 49ers from a middling offense into one of the most productive. McCaffrey currently is in the top 10 for odds to win the award, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. I knew he was really, really good and really special and could do a lot of things conventional running backs can’t do. Obviously, he can run the ball, can run routes out of the backfield, can line up as a receiver and run routes.

And a new report sheds light on how those efforts are resonating with younger fans. Compared to NFL fans aged 30 and older, fans in their 20s were three times more likely to place a bet every week. And only 11% of fans in their 30s spent more than $1,000 annually on sports betting, versus 28% of younger fans. That number was just 33% among fans aged 30 and up. Most of these fans said they played in a fantasy league during the 2022 football season, but most older fans didn't.

While Deutsche Bank is skeptical on the long-term story for Penn National Gaming , it is bullish on shares in the short-term. Analyst Carlo Santarelli put a catalyst call buy, or short-term buy rating, on the sports betting company, which trades as PENN Entertainment. In August, the company signed a licensing deal with ESPN to rebrand its sportsbook to ESPN BET, slated to launch in November. Through the deal, Penn has the exclusive right to the ESPN Bet trademark in the U.S. for 10 years, with potential to be extended. An Investor Day in December, which is likely to focus on ESPN BET, will also highlight the brand's early traction, he added.

The changing landscape of how Americans watch sports is developing in a way that could benefit gambling stocks, according to Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo analyst Daniel Politzer said the initial results showed the technology passed the test for bettors who want to gamble in between plays. "During week 1 of the NFL season, Caesars Sportsbook app had a livestream of NFL SNF. Latency was better than live TV (20-30 seconds), an incremental development in the OSB/media ecosystem that could potentially increase in-game betting," Politzer said. Increased in-game betting could lead to a higher hold for sportsbooks, Politzer said, which is effectively the margin that books make on all bets.

Last year, an estimated 46 million people bet on the NFL in the U.S., according to the AGA. Self-identified NFL fans are expected to place more bets than ever this season, with 37% projected to place a wager. The sports tech sector had one of its best quarters ever in Q2, according to investment bank Drake Star. The large number of new M&A deals, coupled with an influx of capital and a rebounding market, are driving growth in sports tech, Drake Star principal Mohit Pareek told Insider. In Q2, the biggest deal — and one of the largest ever sports-tech deals — was the April acquisition of WWE by Endeavor, the parent company of the UFC. Drake Star found 199 private-funding deals closed in Q2, up from 176 deals in Q1. Overall, though, less money was raised with the Q2 deals totaling $1.6 billion, compared to $1.7 billion last quarter.
