Last week, President Biden tried to acknowledge and mitigate concerns about his capacity to stay on in the most important job in the world. “I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious,” he said after a disastrous debate against Donald Trump. “I don’t walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. What would it mean for a person to “get back up” who also can’t walk, speak or debate with the ease he once did?

In a year when the S & P 500 is touting a 15.5% advance, small-cap stocks look underwhelming – but investors shouldn't shy away from them, said Julie Biel, chief market strategist at Kayne Anderson Rudnick. "I don't think you want to avoid them — they're part of a balanced diet," said Biel, who is also a portfolio manager at the firm. The benchmark small-cap index Russell 2000 is up roughly 1% year to date, whereas the S & P 500 has rallied almost 16%, largely thanks to the strength of Nvidia and other megacap tech stocks. The S & P 400 mid-cap index has also fallen short of its large-cap counterpart, up a modest 5% in 2024. Biel herself manages a small- and mid-cap growth portfolio and takes a long-term investment approach.

How the vodka soda became 'gay water'
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Alex Harring | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +11 min
The combination of soda water and vodka has long been a fixture of boozy LGBTQ+ life, particularly among gay men. One of those came from Houston-based lawyer Jeff Watters, who called the vodka soda the "gay water" of the nighttime in a post on X. Retail is also central to the business for Gay Water, a startup offering canned cocktail variations of vodka soda. The former's vodka soda citrus is 100 calories per can, while Gay Water contains 80. The Gay Bar Shop, a specialty retailer, sells an 11-ounce, $49 candle that smells like a vodka soda with a lime garnish.

This Easy Brunch Dish Feels Like a Trip to Italy

Ruth Rogers, a founder of the famed River Cafe in London, brought cash to a parking lot in Pisa, Italy, to meet a vendor she had connected with through a Ligurian acquaintance. It wasn’t an illicit deal; she was merely seeking a replacement for the frying pans she’d been using to make farinata, a crisp-creamy pancake made from just chickpea flour, olive oil, water and salt. Nearly a decade later, that specialty pan made from dimpled copper and tin, and meant specifically for farinata, remains in rotation at the River Cafe, where it is used to turn out the savory chickpea dish almost daily. Farinata has a long history as a street food in a corner of the Mediterranean coast stretching from Liguria to the French Riviera, and its preparation varies little despite the different names by which it goes: belecauda, or “nice and hot,” as it should be served, in Piedmont; socca in Nice; cade in Toulon; cecina; fainá; and fainè.

Emily KrivogradAt the end of the day, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit CosMc's. None of the menu items seemed like a particularly great value, either, considering I can get something I already know I enjoy from a similar chain for about the same price. CosMc's is set to open 10 locations by the end of 2024, but so far, the chain hasn't even reached half that number. Even so, CosMc's still has a long way to go before it builds a loyal fan base like McDonald's or Starbucks have. Retail sales rose less than expected in May

Washington CNN —Sales at US retailers rose last month at an unexpectedly weak pace as US consumers continue to deal with still-high inflation and elevated interest rates. Retail sales rose just 0.1% in May from the prior month, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. That’s better than April’s downwardly revised 0.2% decline but below the 0.3% gain economists projected in a FactSet poll. Meanwhile, spending was the strongest at specialty stores that sell sporting goods, books, and musical instruments, which jumped by 2.8% last month. Monthly retail sales have increased four times over the past six months through May, but figures for April and March were revised lower, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.
