Amanda McDaniel, a member of the preservation alliance, is rooting for Jordan’s speaker bid — seeing in him the same principles she holds. It is not an approach that builds consensus — a previous Republican speaker to brand him a “legislative terrorist” — even as he has steadily parlayed it into political success. Mr. Jordan embraced right-wing populism long before the Tea Party or Donald Trump made into a national force. Eric Forson, 50, said that when he wrote to his elected representatives during the 2013 government shutdown, Mr. Jordan was the only one who responded. Ms. Esch and her husband, Mike, 57 were both hopeful that Mr. Jordan would drum up the votes needed to take the speaker role on Wednesday.

New York CNN —Growing unrest in the Middle East has cast a shadow on global financial markets. Israeli stocks listed in New York and Tel Aviv have sunk to recent lows, underscoring the growing economic uncertainties in the war-torn region and leaving investors unsure of where markets go from here. Funds in the US hold more than $43 billion in Israeli stocks and bonds, according to a Bloomberg tracker. Big names, big exposure: As the war continues, businesses with headquarters, factories and inventory in Israel appear increasingly at risk to geopolitical turmoil. “If the war remains confined between Israel and Palestinians, it’s likely that the markets will forget about it after a few days,” he wrote.

With interest rates rising and mortgage costs with them, homebuilders are pulling in yards, tightening living rooms and lopping off bedrooms in an attempt to keep the monthly payment in line with what families can afford. In a recent survey of architects, John Burns Research and Consulting found that about half expected their average house size to decline. New communities will have more duplexes or small-lot single-family homes that are just a few feet apart. Even in Texas, where land is abundant, builders are adding more homes per acre, the company found. “The monthly payment matters more than anything else and builders have responded with smaller, more efficient homes,” said John Burns, the company’s chief executive.

Partial results with two-thirds of the voting districts reporting their results also showed the opposition parties with a clear lead. The earlier results tend to come from rural areas and small towns, with large cities where opposition parties do better reporting their results later. The Ipsos poll showed that three centrist opposition parties that campaigned on a promise to reverse the illiberal drift of the government had together secured 249 seats in the 460-seat lower house of parliament, or Sejm, a clear majority. “No matter how you look at it, we won,” Law and Justice campaign manager Joachim Brudziński said Monday in an interview on RMF FM radio. Even if the opposition parties take power, they will face difficulties in putting forward their agenda.

Donald Tusk, leader of the largest opposition grouping Civic Coalition (KO), speaks after the exit poll results are announced in Warsaw, Poland, October 15, 2023. The incumbent Law and Justice (PiS) party has repeatedly clashed with the European Union over the rule of law, media freedom, migration and LGBT rights since it swept to power in 2015. An Ipsos exit poll published early on Monday gave PiS 36.6% of the vote, which would translate into 198 lawmakers in the 460-seat lower house of parliament. On Monday, Duda urged patience until the full election results were known. However, with the far-right Confederation seen winning just 6.4%, below expectations, according to the exit poll, PiS will struggle to forge a new government.

The Moon crosses in front of the Sun over Albuquerque, New Mexico, during an annular eclipse on October 14, 2023. Cheers erupted among crowds in Oregon and New Mexico on Saturday as a rare "ring of fire" eclipse of the sun that had millions across the Americas waiting with anticipation began putting on a spectacular show. Clouds and fog threatened to obscure the view of the eclipse in some western states, including California and Oregon. Unlike a total solar eclipse, the moon doesn't completely cover the sun during a ring of fire eclipse. A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania jail and eluded hundreds of law enforcement officers for almost two weeks in quiet, wooded communities outside Philadelphia has been recaptured, the authorities said on Wednesday morning. Officials were expected to release more details later in the morning. The manhunt grew in size and urgency as the days unfolded, becoming especially pressing after Mr. Cavalcante stole a rifle from a garage on the night of Sept. 11. Officials, who had considered him a dangerous fugitive all along, warned that he was “desperate enough” to use the gun. Over the course of the search, Mr. Cavalcante was spotted numerous times, the authorities said, by people in the area and also in the infrared glare of residential security cameras at night.

People unfamiliar with the idea of a racial map may have been surprised by Black responses to Jason Aldean’s country song “Try That in a Small Town,” which became a hit this summer. I wonder how often vigilante groups were formed to protect Black Southerners from harm rather than inflict it upon them. According to Mr. Aldean, it is simply about the traditional values of small-town America. Do we discover it during the first centuries of the Republic when slavery was the law of the land? The small-town song, in the end, is about a return to a glorious past that existed only for some.

Odor said it was impossible to seal the border with Hungary but the troops would help police register the migrants and also patrol towns in the border area. "I would like to assure citizens that we are still talking about transit migration," Odor said after a government meeting. The Interior Ministry said on Tuesday the number of detained illegal migrants has soared by ninefold, to more than 27,000 so far this year.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden is preparing to blanket the airwaves with a $25 million television and digital ad campaign in battleground states this month, campaign officials told CNN, as Republicans are set to face off in their first presidential primary debate. That same poll found only 37% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy and even fewer – 30% – approve of his handling of inflation. Biden’s ad push, which will include several forthcoming ads, will run for 16 weeks on broadcast and cable television in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North, Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, officials said. Still, the Biden campaign is taking steps to tie the GOP candidates on stage to Trump’s “MAGA” agenda” on both the airwaves and on the ground in Wisconsin, campaign officials said. In Washington, the DNC and the Biden campaign will set up a messaging “war room” to provide rapid response throughout the debate.

Research from the University of Southern California in 2021 found one in three neighborhoods in 30 populous U.S. cities were "pharmacy deserts." California Attorney General Rob Bonta has previously said he was "deeply concerned" about the proposed merger. "Post-transaction, Kroger will operate the pharmacies that are part of the Albertsons' stores that it acquires," the spokesperson said. Neither of the people who spoke with Reuters about pharmacy deserts knew if enforcers would file a lawsuit aimed at stopping the proposed transaction or when enforcers would decide what action to take on Kroger's plan to buy Albertsons. One source told the California attorney general's office that low income people were likely to lose access to pharmacy services, which include vaccinations, if the deal goes forward.

Some ski resorts had to close because they had too much snow. Two of the biggest ski resorts on Lake Tahoe were still hopping on the Fourth of July, a time of year when the mountains are usually full of wildflowers. And don’t bother trying to get used to them in their new form, because they’re going to keep changing, at an ever-faster pace. On an emotional level, there’s something undeniably frightening about that — where’s it all going? — but it can also, in a rare instance like the chance to ski in the dog days of summer, bring a disorienting joy.

The struggle for the soul of country music is on full display now as two very different songs have been making headlines. Michael Loccisano/Getty ImagesThese two songs, so differently received yet recorded under the same big country umbrella, are an embodiment of the crossroads where country music currently stands. Like all musical traditions that fuse, evolve and splinter, country music and its legions of fans are engaged in a negotiation for the genre’s main identity. When the Dixie Chicks spoke out against the Iraq War in the early 2000s, their popularity in country music circles never fully recovered.. Small towns, fast cars and American values are as essential to country music as four chords and the truth.
