AdvertisementOn the first day of my quiet vacation, I had great luck with the timing. After that incident, I was so anxious about getting caught while quiet vacationing during work hours that I changed my approach. AdvertisementMy trip turned from quiet vacationing to a workcation with reduced working hours — but it was still very worth it. I told my job I was in ItalyWhen I first went on my quiet vacation, I tried to keep it secret. It just feels so much better to do the work first and then enjoy your vacation to the maximum.

Read previewMicrosoft has pressed pause on a major AI overhaul of its popular 365 software suite, according to people familiar with the matter. CEO Satya Nadella and his senior leadership team held executive reviews this summer to consider options that included repackaging new AI features into existing licenses or creating a more expensive bundle with AI capabilities. Other changes Microsoft is considering for its 365 software bundles is a new suite just for security features, the people also said. In recent months, some customers and investors have begun to question the value of generative AI technology, including Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant tool. That's in addition to the monthly cost of Microsoft's 365 software bundles.

A study in June found a decrease in prescriptions for birth control pills and emergency contraceptives in states with the most restrictions on abortion. South Carolina has one of the country’s strictest, prohibiting abortions at six weeks of pregnancy. Many women’s health centers, including abortion clinics where women had often gotten their birth control, closed after the Dobbs decision. New Morning attributes its success, in part, to tapping the power of primary care providers who aren’t usually trained in providing birth control. Following the Dobbs decision, women across the country have had to scramble to access birth control or search for longer-term solutions.

HOUSTON — A former Houston police officer was convicted Wednesday of murder in the deaths of a couple during a 2019 drug raid that revealed systemic corruption problems within the police department’s narcotics unit. A jury found Gerald Goines guilty of two counts of murder in the January 2019 deaths of Dennis Tuttle, 59, and his 58-year-old wife Rhogena Nicholas. Goines looked down and did not visibly react as the verdict was read in a Houston courtroom. Goines’ attorneys argued during the trial that the first to fire at another person was Tuttle and not police officers. The probe into the drug raid also uncovered allegations of systemic corruption.

Members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, voted by 397-1 in favor of the new adoption ban in the first of three readings suggesting that the legislation, which has already been conceptually approved by the government, will become law. “This decision is aimed at protecting childhood and traditional values,” Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Duma and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin said after it had been voted on. “It is necessary to protect our children from the dangers they may face when they are adopted or fostered by citizens of foreign countries where gender reassignment is allowed.”Volodin said dozens of Western countries allowed people to change their gender. Vasily Piskarev, a senior lawmaker from the ruling United Russia party and another co-author of the legislation, has alleged that adoptees risk being forced to change their gender or falling victim to sexual exploitation in the West. Russia in 2012 banned adoptions by U.S. citizens and its war in Ukraine has seen the number of adoptions by foreign nationals dwindle to just six children in 2023 according to data from the RBK news outlet.

A new pilot program in California is in the works to create a revamped heat warning system. Turner says we can get a better understanding of how extreme heat is affecting us as it’s happening, which could create more immediate heat protocols to protect people at home, at schools and at work. The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. The Center for Women and Politics found the steepest drop was among Republican women. For Stefanik, the effort to recruit more GOP women to run for the House has been a resounding success.

After years of higher yields on cash, the Federal Reserve's shifting policy means lower future returns on savings, certificates of deposit and money market funds. Despite falling rates, investors should still keep emergency funds "liquid," meaning the cash can be easily tapped, financial experts say. Banks use the federal funds rate to lend to and borrow from one another. Meanwhile, the biggest retail money market funds were still paying around 5%, as of Sept. 24, according to Crane Data. If you have been earning 4% to 5% on emergency savings, you could see a "small reduction" in the short term, said Kenealy, who recommends keeping emergency funds where they are.

Washington CNN —Boeing factory workers felt pressured to prioritize production speed over quality and said they did not receive enough training to properly perform their jobs, according to the results of a special investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published Wednesday. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines shortly after takeoff. One of the more egregious examples, according to the audit, was a Boeing mechanic who used an improvised measuring device to check gaps between components. But there is still much work to be done on fixing Boeing’s safety culture, he said. “I think the safety culture change is going to be a long-term project,” Whitaker said.

Madison, Wisconsin CNN —The mayor of a central Wisconsin city who ran for office on his opposition to absentee ballot drop boxes said Wednesday he did nothing wrong when he put on work gloves, donned a hard hat and used a dolly to cart away a drop box outside City Hall.
