Read previewIt's not every day you shrug off a man trying to hand you an award, but that's exactly what Ron DeSantis found himself doing on Saturday at a campaign event in Iowa. Before DeSantis could begin a speech to voters holding their GOP caucus on January 15, a prankster interrupted to present the Florida governor with a "participation trophy" for his long shot presidential campaign. DeSantis, I want to present to you this participation trophy," Davram Stiefler of the prankster duo "The Good Liars" said, eliciting laughter from the crowd. That said, this café apparently sold the highest-priced Starbucks menu item globally in 2022. You might ask yourself: What luxurious, decadent, brightly colored, hyper-flavorful, blended monstrosity could be the most expensive Starbucks menu item in the world? AdvertisementBehold, the most expensive Starbucks menu drink worldwide as of 2022! The study found the world's second-most expensive Starbucks menu item was Denmark's chocolate-cream Frappuccino, which sounds unique and interesting. Then we'll review what I think will happen into year end and a possible market hedge idea. FedEx gave us a sense of how things are looking when they reported earnings Tuesday evening, and it wasn't good. We got all of them out of FedEx earnings, they hit a dinger, in a bad way, which disappointed the Street to say the least. Market downside reversal I was surprised when, after dipping slightly on the open the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied mildly. Last Friday provided a split-screen view of the markets and the Federal Reserve. “Indeed, we look for the return of striking workers to add nearly 45K jobs to November’s payrolls. Wednesday brings the first measure of the November job market when private payroll firm ADP releases its monthly survey of employers. October came in at 150,000, a drop from the recent trend of around 200,000 jobs added per month. Consequently, we expect the post-meeting statement will keep the door open to the possibility of additional tightening this cycle.

New York CNN —Elon Musk desperately wants to be liked, despite his pronouncement Wednesday that he doesn’t mind being hated. The sentiment is, like so much of Musk’s public persona, a lie designed to keep the public’s focus squarely on him. Watching the interview, even online, you can feel the awkward energy of that moment — cringeworthy for some, but seemingly invigorating for Musk. On Wednesday, Musk sought to shrug off his most recent anti-Jewish post as a “foolish” mistake that got misinterpreted by the media. Musk clearly has “a fairly straightforward case of internet brain rot,” as the Atlantic writer Charlie Warzel put it in a Threads post.

Consumers grew somewhat more optimistic about the future of the economy in November as expectations about inflation improved, but their sense of the current state of affairs worsened a bit. Still, two-thirds of consumers surveyed still expect a recession to be “somewhat” or “very likely” within the next 12 months. However, that is well above current inflation of 3.2% and forecasts from the Federal Reserve and mainstream economists. In the peak hour from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST, consumers spent $15.7 million a minute, according to online analytics firm Adobe. One thing that might make some consumers happy is that home prices continued to increase in September.

China inflation data released on Thursday showed that October CPI fell 0.2% year on year, while PPI data fell 2.6% year on year. Earlier this week, customs data showed that China's total exports of goods and services contracted faster than expected, although the country's crude imports in October were robust. On the plus side for oil demand, China's central bank governor, Pan Gongsheng, said the country is expected to achieve its annual growth target of 5% for this year. U.S. crude oil inventories increased by 11.9 million barrels over the week to Nov. 3, sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), however, has delayed release of weekly oil inventory data until Nov. 15 for a system upgrade.

Tax-loss harvesting is simple: investors reduce capital gains taxes by selling securities for a capital loss. Bank of America analysts led by head of US equity & quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian endorse a new twist on the strategy. In a recent note to clients, Subramanian identified what she calls TLCs: tax-loss candidates. "We've historically seen evidence of tax-loss selling by institutional investors in Oct. (peak outflows), and by retail investors in Dec. ahead of the Dec. 31 cut-off for individual investors," Subramanian wrote. Institutional investors must sell their losing stocks to claim the benefits of tax-loss harvesting by October 31, while retail investors have until December 31.

Europe's startup ecosystem has been battered this year but climate tech founders have managed to avoid the brunt of the immense downturn so far. PwC's global analysis of the sector also points to climate tech outperforming the norm, accounting for a tenth of private market investments in 2023. Venture capital investment into European startups more broadly is primed to slump by around 46% to 58.1 billion euros in 2023. These obligations have helped make climate tech startups "catnip to investors," Sustainable Ventures' Stuart Ferguson said. Last year, European companies like electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar and batter-maker Northvolt raised 1.6 billion euros and 1 billion euros respectively.

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999. Results haven't been bad, but the macro is overwhelming everything, and fourth-quarter guidance is slipping. Here's a general rule for the stock market: earnings are the main determinant of stock prices in the long run, but in rare cases macro trends can overwhelm their message. Earnings are OK, but the trend is down On the surface, this looks like a good earnings season. With earnings, however, it's the trend in the forward quarter that matters: is the trend up or down? If Treasury yields stabilize or even move lower, that will be a more important factor than a slightly lower earnings environment.

Too bad about those Russian children, but they should have chosen somewhere else to be born. A prolonged ground invasion seems to me a particularly risky course, likely to kill large numbers of Israeli soldiers, hostages and especially Gazan civilians. The best answer to this test is to try even in the face of provocation to cling to our values. If your ethics see some children as invaluable and others as disposable, that’s not moral clarity but moral myopia. We must not kill Gazan children in order to protect Israeli children.
