SAINT-ETIENNE, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Fullback Emiliano Boffelli scored 16 points in a man-of-the-match performance as Argentina got their World Cup campaign back on track with a hard fought 19-10 victory over a committed Samoa on Friday. That set up a frenetic finale but Nicolas Sanchez, coming off the bench to win his 99th cap for Argentina, lashed over a final penalty from just inside the Samoa half to make the game safe and deny Samoa a losing bonus point. "It's pretty tough to win a test match, especially against a team of the calibre of Argentina with 40% possession," said Samoa coach Seilala Mapusua. England lead Pool D with nine points from two games, four points ahead of Samoa, who beat Chile 43-10 in their opener, and third-placed Japan with Argentina in fourth place on four points. Argentina laid siege to the Samoan try line at the start of the second half and finally came away with some points when Boffelli kicked his third penalty in the 53rd minute.

"The guys tried to implement the plan and we created opportunities, but we did not take them. England are an experienced side and over time they wore us down," Japan coach Jamie Joseph said. While England looked lost at times in the first half Japan were unable to capitalise, with their kicking game wayward and a litany of unforced errors including dropped balls and skewed lineout throws. As much as they were sloppy Japan could also rue some bad luck on Sunday, after conceding a slapstick try in which the ball bounced off England prop Joe Marler's head. "That is a first for me, we did not get any luck today, did we," Joseph said.

Two years ago, the Metropolitan Opera went shopping for a new “Ring” in London and came home empty-handed. English National Opera’s first installment of Wagner’s four-part epic of gods and humans, lust and power, was judged a bit too scrappy and bare to transfer to the grand Met. And anyway, the English company was soon reeling from cuts to its government funding, putting the completion of the cycle in jeopardy. The Met would like to bring a “Ring” to New York in four seasons — a blink of an eye given opera’s glacial planning cycles and Wagner’s technical and casting complexities. The story is crystal clear, and its emotional and political stakes are taken seriously, without oversimplification or overstatement.

To make it work, Parrish and Butler said business owners must set priorities and make sacrifices. Macy’s named Olivier Bron the next chief executive of Bloomingdale’s, the company’s luxury chain, on Tuesday, the latest move in a leadership shuffle this year. Mr. Bron was previously chief executive of Central Group’s Central and Robinson Department Stores in Thailand. Macy’s announced this year that Mr. Spring would be elevated to chief executive of Macy’s in February after the planned retirement of Jeff Gennette, who has led the company since 2017. Macy’s has ambitions to become more competitive in e-commerce as younger shoppers pull away from department stores. Mr. Gennette previously said Bloomingdale’s, under Mr. Spring, had worked as a “scrappy incubator” for ideas that eventually made their way to Macy’s.

New York CNN —Burning Man, the desert confab that descended into chaos over the weekend, isn’t quite the scrappy, free-spirited revelry that it once was. For many watching the disarray of Burning Man from afar, the rain and mud that left 70,000 people stranded quickly became a symbol of the festival’s departure from its roots. Or, more simply: how the billionaires ruined Burning Man. Going to Burning Man is, in some elite circles, akin to having climbed Everest or taken ayahuasca on a meditation retreat — a spiritually transformative experience, undertaken with a considerable safety net of privilege. “Burning Man is the perfect example of how many rich White people recreationally manufacture hardship because they are immune from it systematically,” wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter, this weekend.

Russia is sinking ships to protect the Kerch Bridge to Crimea from Ukraine's naval drones. The barrier is estimated to be less than a mile in length — a small fraction of the massive 12-mile-long bridge. The ships Russia appears to be sinking were destined for the scrapyard, but could have been valuable for recycling parts. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn July, an explosion apparently caused by a surface drone rocked a section of the Kerch Bridge, wrecking the roadbed and killing two adults. With Crimea being among the most important territory for Kyiv to reclaim in the war, the Kerch Bridge is an important bond to sever.

Amazon representatives are expected to meet this week with members of the commission to discuss the possible suit, a sign that legal action may be imminent. Even as books have become a smaller slice of the company, Amazon has become an overwhelming force in the book market. It accounts for at least 40 percent of physical books sold in the U.S., and more than 80 percent of e-books sold, according to an analysis released by WordsRated, a research data and analytics group. Ukraine's recent waterborne drone attacks have shed light on weaknesses in Russian defenses. Prior to the hits on Olenegorsky Gornyak and Sig, previous naval drone attacks have terrorized Russian ships in the Black Sea. United 24/Ukrainian government'Too many to take out'With the drone attacks showing no sign of stopping, the questions become how Russia will respond. And if Russia does ramp up its defenses, it's likely that Ukraine will scale up the number of its drone boats. Operating a group of drone boats, Clark added, is more difficult given water conditions, weather, and the potential to ram into unintended targets.

Ukrainian drones are attacking Russian ships and tankers, wrecking critical sea supply lanes. It's the latest incident involving Ukrainian sea drones hitting vital Russian naval targets, weakening sea supply lanes and proving Kyiv to be a scrappy, formidable naval force while lacking an actual fleet beyond some patrol boats. "The attacks show that USV operations are increasingly a major component of modern naval warfare and can be turned against the weakest links of Russia's sea supply lanes," the UK intel update said. Ukraine has made the development of sea drones a priority, even crowdfunding for what they call "the formation of the world's first naval fleet of drones." An expert previously told Insider the remotely operated, cheap-but-effective waterborne drones give Ukraine an "asymmetric advantage," stressing Russian defenses and resources.

While he faces classic signs of a campaign in free fall, including staffer layoffs and donor concern, DeSantis’ problems are not all self-inflicted. Ukraine has received various Western tanks, weapons systems, fighting vehicles, and armor. But Russia has often sidelined the assets with trenches, anti-tank mines, and fortified defenses. An expert told Insider the West's piecemeal rollout gave Russia time to adapt to each weapons system. Landmines, booby traps, and trip wires are a favorite Russian tactic, turning Ukraine's environment against Kyiv's own troops. To deal with Ukraine's mine clearers and sappers, Russia has stacked anti-tank mines to destroy de-mining equipment that can only handle so much explosive force.
