Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is about the Manhattan Project, and features an atomic bomb test. By using chemicals and layering clips while editing, they made a realistic atomic explosion. July 14 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth Group's (UNH.N) quarterly profit beat Wall Street estimates on Friday as a smaller-than-expected jump in medical costs allayed fears that a resumption in long-delayed surgical procedures would hit profit growth, sending its shares up 5%. The beat from the industry bellwether lifted the shares of rivals Humana (HUM.N), Cigna (CI.N), CVS Health (CVS.N) and Elevance Health (ELV.N) between 2% and 5%. Chief financial officer John Rex said the company expects medical costs for the third quarter to be "a little bit lower" compared to the second quarter. UnitedHealth's profit of $6.14 per share for the second quarter beat analysts' expectations of $5.99, according to Refinitiv. Representative Kevin Kiley, Republican from California, asked Khan about the cases that the agency had lost. “We fight hard when we believe there was a law violation, and unfortunately things don’t always go our way,” responded Khan. The agency also lost a fight to stop Facebook parent Meta Platforms from buying VR content maker Within Unlimited. Democrats on the committee sought to defend Khan, occasionally joined by Republicans on the panel including Rep. Ken Buck. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, a Republican, however, worried about investors in small businesses losing their exit strategies.

The NewsAfter months of speculation, Chloé said its creative director, Gabriela Hearst, was leaving the French fashion house after a three-year tenure. Why It Matters: Chloé was vying to become a beacon of sustainable fashionMs. Hearst, a Uruguay-born designer of women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, founded her namesake luxury label in New York in 2015 before joining Chloé in December 2020. To many observers the combination of Ms. Hearst and Chloé appeared to be a savvy match. But rumors throughout 2023 indicated that Ms. Hearst and Chloé might part ways, in part because of pressures placed on the designer by her trans-Atlantic schedule. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Hearst continued to run her New York-based business while leading the Chloé design studio in Paris.

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File PhotoJune 29 (Reuters) - A Texas grand jury is meeting Thursday to weigh possible criminal charges against rapper Travis Scott and others over a 2021 crowd crush at a musical festival that left 10 dead and injured thousands, Scott’s lawyer confirmed. “Nothing Travis did or failed to do fits within the Texas criminal code,” Schaffer told Reuters. The plaintiffs allege Scott, Live Nation and more than two dozen other defendants let too many people into the venue despite knowing the risks because they wanted the concert to appear packed. The family of one of the people killed settled on undisclosed terms with Scott, Live Nation and others in October 2022.

There ain’t no party like a Jay Gatsby party — in “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s debonair poster boy of American ambition and the nouveau riche never lets the festivities stop. Neither does Immersive Everywhere’s “The Great Gatsby: The Immersive Show,” a jovial feast for the senses that never, in its lagging two-and-a-half-hour running time, truly rises above the status of a mere attraction. Gatsby’s neighbor, Nick Carraway, narrates Gatsby’s tragic — and, ultimately, fatal — fall from the world of the rich and famous. Gatsby hopes to woo Nick’s cousin Daisy, with whom he had a love affair that he’s never forgotten. Main plot points, including major introductions and confrontations, are played as set scenes that everyone witnesses together in the main space.

“I said sure, I’d read it right away, and I did,” Soderbergh wrote. In other hands, “Out of Sight” might not have proved to be such a game changer for Clooney, who was having a rough time making the transition from “E.R.” heartthrob to movie star. And another director might not have cast Jennifer Lopez, whose movie-star stock also rose considerably after her tough, sexy turn in the film. “Out of Sight” (streaming on Peacock) was part of a mini-bonanza of Leonard adaptations, following the success of “Get Shorty” (1995). (Tarantino told him that “Jackie Brown” was “nothing like ‘Out of Sight,’” Soderbergh wrote in March.

By definition, gardens are thought of as green. In reality, though, the resources used to keep them looking pristine, in terms of water, fertilizers and fuel for the mower, are staggering. How can we garden in a way that’s better for biodiversity and sustainability?
Republican Sen. Rick Scott is reportedly considering a presidential run. According to The New York Times, Scott is eyeing a late entry into the field. The Times reports that Scott, who was also governor of Florida, is considering a late entry into the growing 2024 Republican field. If Scott were to enter, there would then be four Floridians in a field that already has Trump, DeSantis, and Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez. Scott and DeSantis have a frosty relationship, though Scott often demurs when asked about his successor.

Unless, that is, you recognize this opening as a summary of “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel about the innocence of the mountebank and his martyrdom at the hands of the wealthy married couple he tries to come between. This reversal is part of what makes “Gatsby” such an essential American text. In “Gatsby,” money is clearly corrupting once you have it, because the having imbues you with the “vast carelessness” of Tom and Daisy Buchanan or the cold-eyed manipulative spirit of the men who use Gatsby as their front. “If he’d of lived he’d of been a great man,” Gatsby’s father says before the funeral. But in dying young, Gatsby achieved the secret goal of all Americans: to get rich while remaining citizens of Eden, innocents till the last.

Shelbourne goalkeeper leaves club for Love Island

June 15 (Reuters) - Irish side Shelbourne are grappling with an unconventional transfer after goalkeeper Scott van der Sluis announced he was leaving to participate in dating reality show "Love Island". Van der Sluis, a former Wales youth international, is heading to Spain after requesting an early release from his contact to take a break from his professional career. Shelbourne boss Damien Duff was amused by Van der Sluis' decision. "I was shocked and saddened that Scott chose a villa in Mallorca full of beautiful, single women over myself, the staff and the players," ex-Ireland winger Duff joked. "All jokes aside, I thank Scott for his services to Shelbourne FC and we all wish him the very best for the future, whatever that holds."

The A’s, with a roster gutted of any recognizable players over the last few seasons, were expected to be terrible this season and spent more than two months on pace to shatter the 1962 Mets’ modern era record for losses in a season. Their play has recently picked up, with the team taking a fairly shocking six-game win streak into Tuesday night’s game against the Rays, which they continued with a 2-1 win over the best team in baseball. In a rare sight, the Coliseum, which had averaged a major league-low 8,555 fans a game entering the game, was packed on Tuesday with a season-best crowd of 27,759, many of whom were wearing green T-shirts that said “Sell” across the chest as part of a planned protest. “I’ve been to only one game this year. “They want the ownership to sell the team so they can remain in Oakland.”But should Nevada approve public funds toward a new stadium, the hopes of building a new park in Oakland, at Howard Terminal or elsewhere, would likely vanish, even as the city of Oakland has worked to keep the door open.

WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - Other U.S. crypto exchanges are likely to be in the firing line after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week sued Coinbase and Binance, two of the world's largest crypto exchanges, for allegedly breaching its rules. Both Coinbase and Binance deny the SEC's allegations and have pledged to vigorously defend themselves in court. The Coinbase and Binance suits this week expand that list to include some commonly traded tokens, such as Solana, Cardano and Polygon. While big crypto companies can afford to fight the SEC, smaller companies have filed for bankruptcy following SEC enforcement actions, including crypto exchange Beaxy. "I think if there's a real value in these crypto tokens, then compliance will build trust and the business model might change," he said.

A deepfake video of Ron DeSantis as Michael Scott in "The Office" has gone viral on Twitter. Ron DeSantis acting as Michael Scott in an episode of "The Office" is going viral on Twitter, and it's just another example of how artificial intelligence can be weaponized against politicians. The deepfake video features DeSantis' face superimposed on that of Steve Carell's iconic character. The deepfake DeSantis replies indignantly: "No. Trump's camp has launched numerous attacks on DeSantis since he announced his bid — this deepfake video is just the latest example of how AI has been used against DeSantis.
Don Trump Jr. re-tweeted a AI-generated clip of Ron DeSantis appearing as Michael Scott in "The Office." In the clip, the character is ridiculed by his coworkers for wearing a woman's suit. In a bizarre attempt to insult his father's 2024 presidential competitor, Trump Jr. re-posted the video with the caption, "DeSantis does seem to spend a lot of time in high heels." In the clip, Ron DeSantis's face and voice are superimposed over Michael Scott's — the character played by Steve Carell — in a scene where Scott is being ridiculed at the office for wearing a woman's suit. At the end of the scene, the AI-generated Ron DeSantis as Michael Scott looks to the camera and says, "Negotations are all about controlling things, about being in the driver's seat.
Trump has easily led the pack since launching his campaign last year, with Florida Gov. "Tim Scott is the real deal, and he will make a great president of the united states," Thune told the crowd in North Charleston before Scott took the stage. "This can't be another presidential campaign. The long-expected campaign kickoff came three days after Scott filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission designating a principal committee for a presidential bid. "Tim is a big step up from Ron DeSanctimonious, who is totally unelectable," Trump wrote in a social media post earlier Monday.
