AdvertisementAccording to The Washington Post, top union leaders have privately expressed concerns about Biden's ability to beat Trump in November. AdvertisementLosing support from laborAccording to Politico's Jonathan Martin, support from the unions is likely Biden's only path to survival against Trump. The AFL-CIO told the Associated Press on Thursday that Biden's "fighting spirit" was on full display during his meeting with union leaders this week. He "wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020," said Clooney. AdvertisementIf union leaders join the chorus of voices asking Biden to step down, other key supporters may quickly follow.

CNN —A historically hot summer in the United States is on a July killing spree and the toll will only grow with the hottest days yet to come. It’s been the hottest summer on record to date for around 100 US cities from Maine to California. Nine were over the age of 65, the county medical examiner told CNN. At least 10 suspected heat deaths are being reported in Oregon. The region is still typically quite hot in July even without heat reaching record levels daily.

The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

Officers interviewed two motel residents who called 911; they said they did not want to leave their homes. Alyssa Pointer for Business InsiderIn Georgia, an eviction requires a court order, but the law doesn't explicitly make lockouts illegal. In this case, an officer classified the incident as a "crime against property" — a crime committed by the residents themselves. In unincorporated Clark County, where the property is located, operating a short-term rental without a license is illegal. I was raised with a style of parenting that leaned more toward authoritarian. That's why respectful and empathic gentle parenting that acknowledged a child's feelings had a real appeal to me. I looked into gentle parentingEarly in my daughter's life, I started following gentle parenting influencers. These days, I'm not sure what label I'd put on my parenting style, perhaps mostly authoritative, a parenting style that is more focused on being responsive and supportive while still setting boundaries. I am done with following gentle parenting experts and taking their advice on how to parent my child, though.

CNN —A United Airlines plane lost a wheel while taking off Monday from Los Angeles International Airport, officials said, marking the latest issue this year for the airline, which was already the focus of a safety review by federal aviation officials. The Boeing 757-200 that lost its wheel completed its planned flight to Denver, where it safely landed, United said. “The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” the airline said in a statement. The incident comes months after another United Airlines flight lost a wheel while taking off from San Francisco International Airport, damaging several cars in a parking lot. The incident was one of at least a dozen involving United Airlines flights in March, according to a CNN analysis, prompting CEO Scott Kirby to send a safety message to customers.

New York CNN —Radio host Andrea Lawful-Sanders has resigned from WURD Radio after admitting her post-debate interview with President Joe Biden included questions that were pre-selected by Biden’s campaign team, the station told CNN Sunday. “As a result, Ms. Lawful-Sanders and WURD Radio have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.”WURD is Pennsylvania’s only Black-owned talk radio station. In an interview Saturday with CNN’s Victor Blackwell, she said those questions were part of eight that were recommended to her by Biden aides ahead of the interview. Biden’s debate performance has left many top Democrats wringing their hands in frustration and concern amid talk that he should not accept the party’s nomination. The Biden campaign said later Saturday it will no longer suggest questions to interviewers.

Beryl will likely create dangerous rip currents along much of the US Gulf Coast for the holiday weekend. “Life-threatening beach conditions” will begin Friday afternoon and persist through the weekend for the Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center warned Thursday morning. “Beachgoers should be extremely wary of these conditions over the holiday weekend,” the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi urged Thursday. Widespread high temperatures in the 90s for the Gulf Coast this weekend will likely have people seeking out said relief. Rip currents can be spotted from the shore but are tricky to see for anyone already in the water.

Beryl is set to emerge in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend after it roars through the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for Beryl to restrengthen as it tracks across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. It will then push toward Mexico’s coast and make landfall Sunday night in far northeastern Mexico. Anyone from Mexico’s eastern Gulf Coast to Texas and even Louisiana should keep a close watch on the forecast in the coming days. Even if Beryl makes landfall in northeastern Mexico, wind and rain from the cyclone will likely impact parts of the US’s Gulf Coast.

Whether they’re driving or flying, people traveling for the upcoming holiday weekend are expected to break records in what is already one of the busiest years yet for travel. The Fourth of July holiday usually marks the peak for summer travel, and this summer is already showing signs of surpassing the past two record-setting summers. Travel records keep getting broken. With people itching to get away in the wake of coronavirus shutdowns, air travel in recent years has taken off. Travel volumes are still growing, despite higher costs and a more volatile industry, according to Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of travel at AAA.

A weakening economy may help push the Federal Reserve to make more rate cuts this year than the market is currently expecting, according to Lazard. The firm's chief market strategist Ronald Temple said in a second-half outlook that his base case is for the Fed to start cutting interest rates in September, with two additional cuts later in the year. Temple's base case is more aggressive on rate cuts than the current market view. However, Temple says the Fed will be able to lean on the economic data to make a move. Temple did caution that Fed rate cuts may not end up significantly lowering long-term interest rates, which could be bad news for prospective homeowners waiting for mortgage rates to drop.

Beryl is first hurricane of 2024 Atlantic season
  + stars: | 2024-06-28 | by ( Eric Zerkel | Sara Tonks | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. Normally, ocean temperatures aren’t warm enough in this region in June and July to help tropical systems thrive. That’s hardly the case this year, and one of the reasons behind record-high hurricane season forecasts over the past few months. Both have low odds of developing over the next week, but given the unusual early season action and favorable ocean temperatures, they will have to be watched closely.

Shein, the fast fashion giant with links to China, has confidentially filed for a public listing in London as it faces backlash in the U.S., a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. Elected officials in the U.S. have repeatedly expressed concerns about the use of forced labor in Shein's supply chain and its use of a U.S. tax law exemption known as de minimis. Shein would still prefer to go public in the U.S., sources previously told CNBC, and its filing in London doesn't mean that an IPO will happen there. It's unclear if Beijing has signed off on the London listing. Shein's London filing marks another twist in the company's so-far long road to a public markets debut.

When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J.
