U.S. President Joe Biden rides his bike down a path in Gordons Pond State Park in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, U.S., August 1, 2023. As the indictment was being unsealed, Biden and his wife Jill were headed to Matt's Fish Camp, a chowder and fried fish restaurant, for an early supper. "We would refer you to the Justice Department, which conducts its criminal investigations independently," said Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson. "The Department of Justice is independent," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters last Friday. Polls show a tight race between Biden, 80, and Trump, 77, with 15 months to go before Election Day.

Special counsel Jack Smith's second indictment against Trump alleges he unlawfully tried to overturn his election loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. One day earlier, a former business partner of Hunter Biden testified that the younger Biden put his father on the phone during business meetings about 20 times, according to U.S. House members. Numerous GOP lawmakers and other supporters of Trump were quick to link the timing of Archer's testimony to Smith's indictment. White House spokesman Ian Sams posted that Archer "appears to have actually testified that President Biden wasn't involved and didn't discuss their business dealings. As they did following his first federal indictment in June, Trump's defenders attacked Smith and questioned his credibility.

For Biden, Trump’s third indictment is undoubtedly the most personal. The White House declined to comment on Trump’s indictment Tuesday, referring questions to the Department of Justice. The White House learned of the indictment through media reports, a White House official said, as was the case with past indictments. After Trump was indicted in June, Biden was repeatedly pressed for comment on the historic first federal indictment of a former president. Ahead of Trump’s indictment Tuesday, a Biden campaign official said the campaign once again did not intend to fundraise off a Trump indictment, determining that the risks of fundraising off the indictment – which would feed Republican attacks of a politicized prosecution – outweighed the potential benefits.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Trump was hit with another indictment and accused of trying to overturn the 2020 vote. The Bidens then headed to a nearby movie theatre to catch Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," according to Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason. "We would refer you to the Justice Department, which conducts its criminal investigations independently," White House spokesperson Ian Sams told Reuters. And Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed that the indictment was an attempt to derail his father's re-election campaign. A representative for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Trump has rejected any suggestion he was in the wrong after the 2020 election. Among the six are four unnamed attorneys who allegedly aided Trump in his effort to subvert the 2020 election. Fake electors plot was an unprecedented attempt to subvert Electoral CollegeThe so-called fake electors plot was an unprecedented attempt to subvert the Electoral College process by replacing electors that Biden had rightfully won with illegitimate GOP electors. Federal investigators have subpoenaed the fake electors across the country, sent FBI agents to interview witnesses about their conduct, and recently granted immunity to two fake electors from Nevada to secure their grand jury testimony. In Michigan, the state’s attorney general charged the 16 fake electors who signed certificates falsely claiming Trump won Michigan in the 2020 election with multiple felonies.

The source also reiterated that Archer provided no evidence connecting President Joe Biden to any of his son’s foreign business dealings. Goldman said Archer told the panel that Hunter Biden did put his father on speaker phone in the presence of business partners, but that business was never discussed. Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, arrives for closed-door testimony at the O'Neill House Office Building on July 31, 2023 in Washington, DC. Comer then accused Joe Biden of lying about his family’s business dealings and his own involvement – pledging that his panel will continue to investigate. In recent weeks, he delivered his most explicit threat yet to Biden, saying House Republicans’ investigations into the Biden family’s business deals appear to be rising to the level of an impeachment inquiry.

A mystery buyer spent $875,000 on 11 of Hunter Biden's paintings. That's according to internal documents from Biden's art gallery that Insider obtained. Hunter Biden was aware of Hirsh Naftali's identity as well as the identity of another buyer, Kevin Morris, Insider learned. Hunter Biden's counsel told Insider that he became aware of the buyers' identities after their purchases because they were his friends. Kevin McCarthy is now openly discussing the possibility of impeaching Biden. In response, White House spokesperson Ian Sams blasted McCarthy for the "seemingly bottomless" desire of Republicans to punish the president despite a lack of concrete evidence. The House speaker's mention is more than just a shot across the bow at the White House. As Politico pointed out, McCarthy's mention hints that House Republicans may try to start an impeachment process as a way to potentially unlock greater legal power. While McCarthy has been more guarded when discussing impeachment, some of the more conservative House Republicans have pushed for impeaching the president since his inauguration.

CNN —Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested that House Republicans may be approaching the point where they’d pursue an impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden, the California Republican’s most explicit threat of impeaching the president to date. McCarthy’s comments come amid a series of congressional investigations in the Republican-led House that have targeted Biden, his administration and his family members – most prominently his son Hunter. Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to two federal tax misdemeanors as part of a plea deal. House Republicans have also floated possible impeachment inquiries against Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Republican allegations of political interference in the Hunter Biden probe have been met with adamant denials from Weiss, Garland and other top Justice Department officials who were involved.

Internal gallery documents reveal that sales of Hunter Biden's art brought in $1.3 million. The messaging seemed to suggest that Hunter Biden's art patrons came from a rarified universe of collectors who had nothing to do with the hurly burly of politics. Hunter Biden did in fact learn the identity of two buyers, according to three people directly familiar with Hunter Biden's own account of his art career. In the past, Hunter Biden has privately suggested that he could arrange to have friends seated on the commission. In fact, according to the person familiar with Hunter Biden's account, Morris purchased the art through Biden's gallery.

A privileged resolution to censure Democratic Representative Adam Schiff over his leading role in Trump's Ukraine impeachment came before the House for a second time on Wednesday. McCarthy said he opposed a one-off vote to impeach Biden while committee investigations into the president's family business dealings and his administration are still under way. Greene, who has already introduced formal articles of impeachment against Biden and the other officials, told reporters that internal division is preventing Republicans from approving impeachment bills in the House Judiciary Committee. Boebert introduced her proposal as a so-called privileged resolution, subject to a vote within two legislative days, and Greene said she would consider a similar move. Greene was one of the few Republicans who voiced open support for Boebert's impeachment resolution.

CNN —Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, will plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors and struck a deal with federal prosecutors to resolve a felony gun charge, the Justice Department said Tuesday in court filings. Trump criticized the Hunter Biden plea deal on Truth Social. Hunter Biden’s legal team sought a meeting with the Justice Department in April, which Weiss attended, and where Hunter Biden’s lawyers gave a presentation detailing why they believe Hunter Biden shouldn’t be charged. Part of their argument included that Hunter Biden paid back taxes owed, including penalties. Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Hunter Biden is pleading guilty to two tax charges and struck a deal to resolve the gun charge.

Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two criminal charges for failing to pay taxes. The gun charge will likely be dismissed if Biden seeks treatment for substance abuse. In a court filing Tuesday, prosecutors in the US Attorney's office in Delaware said the son of President Joe Biden has agreed to plead guilty to two criminal counts for failing to pay income tax. Hunter Biden reportedly failed to pay around $1.2 million in taxes in 2017 and 2018, but his attorneys say he has since paid the IRS the money in full. House Republicans, armed with their razor-thin majority, have also zeroed in on Hunter Biden through multiple probes.

Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images/FileThe White House is declining to comment on reports that former President Donald Trump has been indicted. Biden upheld that very notion earlier on Thursday when he was asked what he would tell Americans to convince them that they should trust the independence and fairness of the Justice Department. “Because you’ll notice, I have never once, not one single time, suggested to the Justice Department what they should do or not do on whether to bring any charges or not bring any charges. I’m honest,” Biden said.

Russia's S-400 is a highly regarded weapon designed to intercept a variety of aircraft and missiles. But in Ukraine, Moscow has pressed its S-400s into service to intercept US-made HIMARS rockets or, more bizarrely, to bombard Ukrainian cities. Ukraine has used the S-300 — predecessor to the S-400 — and the American-made Patriot to intercept Kalibr cruise missiles and even Kinzhal hypersonic weapons. A more suitable system to destroy HIMARS rockets would be Israel's Iron Dome, which has frequently intercepted small rockets and even mortar shells. An S-400 missile is launched at a military base in southern Russia during an exercise in September 2020.
Ongoing problems with the Russian navy's biggest warships illustrate that trend. This seems most evident with Russia's largest surface warships: its Kirov-class nuclear-powered battlecruisers, Admiral Nakhimov and Pyotr Velikiy, and the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's sole aircraft carrier. Admiral Kuznetsov in a floating dry dock in a shipyard in Murmansk in August 2010. Other Russian navy sources quickly denied the report to another state media outlet. Izvestia has also reported that the Russian navy is reforming the Kuznetsov's crew, which was mostly disbanded when the ship began its refit.
Ukraine's Patriots aren't hard to find, and Russia appears to be using one of its best weapons to hunt them. Patriot missile defense system at Schwesing military airport in Germany on March 17, 2022. He asserted that "to the extent possible, replenishing Ukraine's air defense capacity should remain a priority for Western military aid for the foreseeable future."
Its defenses struggle to counter the bombs, so Ukraine wants tools to take out the Russian strike fighters. "Guided bombs are tricky for air defense because they have short flight times and usually very little infrared signature," he said. "The air defense system with the longest distance available to us is the S-300, but it's Soviet-era weapons." That is absolutely unrealistic," he said, challenging the arguments against sending fighter aircraft. There are significant training, supply chain, and operational hurdles to overcome, making essential ground-based air defense a priority in the meantime.
Russia's air force has had a limited role in Ukraine, despite numerical and technological advantages. Russia has held its air force back largely because of Ukraine's effective air-defense network. Which raises the question: If Ukrainian air defenses fade, will the Russian Air Force — known as the VKS — finally become a decisive factor in the war? Ukraine's small but resourceful air force put up spirited resistance that mitigated Russia's numerical and technological superiority, however. "So the air force, I think, would definitely be committed much more heavily if they had a chance."

Russia's air force has an edge over Ukraine's aircraft, requiring Ukraine to rely on other capabilities. Fighting off Russia's air force is dependent on Ukraine's surface-to-air missiles, a new report says. One document in particular that was obtained and reviewed by Insider details Ukraine's air defense capabilities and the risks it faces. Soldiers of the German Armed Forces stand on a trailer with launching pads for guided missiles of the Patriot air defense system on a snow-covered field in southeastern Poland. "Our beautiful Ukrainian sky becomes more secure because Patriot air defense systems have arrived in Ukraine," Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said last week.
