CNN —Jon Rahm became the darling of Europe with a remarkable performance at the Ryder Cup on Friday, but not everyone was impressed. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, his earlier foursomes point further helping Europe surge into a five point lead at Marco Simone Golf Club. “So yeah, I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did. 1 against a pair with no major crowns and in Aberg, a 23-year-old Ryder Cup debutant who turned pro less than 100 days ago. “We make a strong team,” Hovland said.

Nearly 28 hours into the Ryder Cup, the two rookies clinched the Americans’ first full point by beating Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka 4 and 2 in morning foursomes Saturday at Marco Simone. “We obviously are in a big hole but we have the right guys to dig ourselves out of it,” Homa said. Homa and Harman were playing again in Saturday’s fourballs against Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard — meaning Homa will be the only American to play in all five sessions. Homa and Harman never trailed against Lowry and Straka — also a first for the Americans at this Ryder Cup. As Harman said, “It was good to come out and at least put red up on the board."

1 Scottie Scheffler was left in tears after suffering a defeat of historic proportions at the Ryder Cup on Saturday. On paper, Scheffler and Koepka looked a pairing more than capable of finally securing a first win for US captain Zach Johnson. Both major champions, Koepka boasting five, the experienced Americans were facing a pair without a major crown between them and in Aberg, a 23-year-old Ryder Cup rookie who turned pro less than 100 days ago. It eclipses the previous 18-hole Ryder Cup winning margin record of 8&7, both inflicted by Americans in singles matches; Tom Kite over Howard Clark in 1989, and Fred Couples over Ian Woosnam in 1997. “Yesterday was an amazing day and we wanted to enjoy it because it’s not very often you go out on a full day in a Ryder Cup and don’t lose a full point,” McIlroy told reporters.

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — Rory McIlroy lost his match at the Ryder Cup. That incident prompted another angry exchange involving McIlroy as he left the Marco Simone club. McIlroy was seen to be visibly furious outside the clubhouse as Jim “Bones” Mackay, the caddie for Justin Thomas, attempted to intervene. European captain Luke Donald said McIlroy “politely asked Joe to move aside.” McIlroy still had a putt for birdie to tie the match, which he wound up missing. “I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did,” Koepka said in the television interview. “I mean, I’m not going to stand here and say I’m a perfect example on what to do on a golf course. Incredibly, Hovland and Aberg were up against two of the biggest names in Zach Johnson's American team, with Scheffler ranked world number one and Koepka a five-time major winner. The 23-year-old Aberg only turned professional in June, has played only a handful of tour events and is the first Ryder Cup player not to have contested a major. Hovland, 26, had a Ryder Cup baptism of fire in 2021 when he was part of the team that was trounced 19-9 but two years later he is exacting sweet revenge. I don't think we could have done better," Hovland said of his partnership with Aberg that could become a key component of multiple Ryder Cups. The only bigger Ryder Cup wins in foursomes were 10&9 victories achieved in the 1930s and 40s over 36 holes.

It looked more like the start of a city marathon than fans heading into a golf tournament, but such is the Ryder Cup’s unique brand of appeal. CNN —Rome turned blue as Europe stunned the United States in a Ryder Cup opening battle for the ages at Marco Simone Golf Club on Friday. The five-point advantage for captain Luke Donald’s side marks the joint-highest lead following the opening round in Ryder Cup history, equalling the records set by Europe and the US in 2004 and 1975 respectively. Team USA, without a victory on European soil in 30 years, will need a roaring response if they are to bring an end to the streak come Sunday. Struggling US Ryder Cup team hit by illness - Johnson

"There's been some unforeseen things that we've had to navigate around, which is really unfortunate, in the sense of health," said Johnson. "It's not an excuse, because we have depth, but I'll just say I'm grateful we have a team doctor." Johnson, who has made five Ryder Cup appearances as a player and served as vice-captain three times, did not reveal too much about the illness but said it passed around between the caddies and players. The U.S. won the 2021 Ryder Cup at home in dominant fashion but now have a mountain to climb if they hope to end a 30-year drought on European soil this weekend. Johnson, who raised some eyebrows for not playing Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka in the morning session and also for sending out two Ryder Cup rookie pairings, said the illness affected some of his lineup decisions.

Fans new and old in high spirits as Ryder Cup tees off

ROME, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Fans from across Europe and the United States travelled to Rome in high spirits for the 44th Ryder Cup, enjoying warm weather and bringing a blaze of colour to the Eternal City as the action got underway on Friday. It is the first time the event has been held in Italy, attracting a host of local fans alongside more regular visitors from afar. "This is my eighth Ryder Cup, we are veterans," said Andy Nichol, who came with his friends from England and had British flags all over his suit, including on his tie and hat. While many American fans felt the food and drinks were fairly priced considering the popularity of the event, visitors from Europe voiced some criticism. However, visitors generally agreed the Marco Simone was a fine course, the event was well organised and the Ryder Cup was different from any other golf tournament.

A thrilling fourballs session was going the way of the Americans as they led in three matches deep into the back nine. But Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm and veteran Justin Rose ensured Europe won it 2-1/2 to 1-1/2, with three matches that went all the way to the 18th. "That was my moment there on the 18th -- I've made us a lot of points but I haven't had many moments like that so that was immense," Rose, playing his sixth Ryder Cup, said. Hovland was majestic as he and Aberg, the first Ryder Cup player not to contest a major, proved too hot for Homa and Harman to handle in match two. Matt Fitzpatrick, playing with McIlroy, earned his first Ryder Cup point in stunning fashion with four birdies and an eagle in an early blitz that Morikawa and Schauffele never recovered from, losing 5&3.

Since the Ryder Cup began in 1927 there have been only two tied matches. There followed a series of terrifically close matches but only in 1989 at The Belfry did one finish level at 14-14 with Europe retaining the title having led 14-10 only to lose the last four singles. In cricket I think retaining the Ashes is a big thing. You have a completely new team, for instance, at the Solheim Cup, and they tied. Perhaps the best approach is that of US Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis, who reviewing the draw that was an effective defeat, decided to view it as a victory anyway.

Sainz could not match the feat, the Spaniard wincing as his opening effort skewed towards the rough. Around 150,000 fans will descend on the spectacular course over the next three days -- the majority of them roaring on Europe in what their captain Luke Donald hopes will be "the loudest Ryder Cup" ever. At the ceremony in the fan zone, cheers erupted as Europe's players were introduced by former world number one and four-time Ryder Cup player Donald -- the loudest reserved for England's Tommy Fleetwood and talisman Rory McIlroy. The lure of the Eternal City and the magic of the Ryder Cup means there will be plenty of stars and stripes mixed in with the yellow and blue of Europe over the next three days, with hundreds having made the trip across the pond. "You are the heartbeat of this event, you are our 13th man, let's make this the loudest Ryder Cup ever," Donald, who began his speech in Italian, said as he signed off. The opening game features Spain's Jon Rahm and England's Tyrrell Hatton against world number one Scottie Scheffler and rookie Sam Burns, followed by Scandinavian duo Viktor Hovland and newcomer Ludvig Aberg versus Open winner Brian Harman and world number seven Max Homa, both also rookies.

But the Serbian bounced back to beat Alcaraz in a thrilling final at Cincinnati before going on to claim a record-equalling 24th major at the U.S. Open earlier this month. "I think tennis, definitely the future is looking good with Carlos leading that field," Djokovic told Sky Sports during the All Star Match in the build-up to golf's 44th Ryder Cup. Djokovic and Alcaraz have split their four meetings on tour and the veteran hoped they would continue having matches.
