She didn’t need more speaking time because Haley valued quality over quantity. Regardless of the topic, I felt that Haley’s understanding of the issues and the depth of her answers were unrivaled. The NIH said a growing body of evidence suggests cephalopods are capable of feeling pain. Other countries have also extended animal welfare protections to octopuses. The US Public Health Service sets the federal standards for animal welfare in science under its policy on "Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." The move comes after other countries have also extended animal welfare protections to cephalopods, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Switzerland.

Elon Musk bought a horse farm in Texas near Tesla's Gigafactory, author Walter Isaacson wrote. The biographer said Musk envisioned a house that looked like "something fell out of space." The Wall Street Journal has reported Musk was building a glass house, but he has denied the reports. "He needs a place where his sole resides and that's what the horse farm will be for him." At the time, Musk denied living in the modular house, saying that he lives in a different small house in Texas.

That includes the agency's examination of Pfizer 's proposed $43 billion purchase of cancer drug developer Seagen . Some also speculated that the restrictions imposed on Amgen as part of the settlement could have implications for other deals. The FTC's lawsuit against Amgen in May was the agency's first legal challenge to a pharmaceutical buyout in 14 years. The settlement agreement prohibits Amgen from bundling any of its products with two of Horizon's blockbuster drugs, among other restrictions. Still, some analysts said the restrictions suggest the FTC could apply similar rules to other buyouts in the future.

Sept 1 (Reuters) - Pickering Energy Partners (PEP) is launching a financial advisory unit for oil and gas dealmaking, the investment firm said on Friday, doubling down on traditional fossil fuels as some banks are becoming wary about the industry and ramping up their bets on clean energy. The launch of the investment banking unit marks a return to oil and gas advisory services for Dan Pickering, the veteran energy financier who helped form Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co, an energy boutique bank that was acquired by Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP.O) in 2016. Houston-based PEP has an existing investment banking unit that focuses solely on energy transition, while the firm's other offerings include equity research, investment funds, and consulting services. All non-compete agreements between the two firms have now expired, enabling Pickering to pursue oil and gas advisory work. Banks including BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO) and Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.TO) have pulled back from oil and gas dealmaking over the past few years.

Ed Ruscha’s ‘Chocolate Room’ Still Tantalizes

A rich perfume wafts through the sixth floor of the Museum of Modern Art, where the installation of Ed Ruscha’s full-dress survey “Now Then” is underway. You sense it before you see it: a room where the white walls are turning velvety brown. A chocolate room. “Chocolate Room” is an oddity in Ruscha’s influential oeuvre. Of the 85-year-old Nebraska native’s hundreds of projects — paintings, prints, and photo books; dry eulogies of Americana like SPAM cans and Mobil stations and two-lane blacktop — “Chocolate Room” is his only installation.

An Amgen sign is seen at the company's office in South San Francisco, California in this October 21, 2013. Under the FTC settlement, Amgen is prohibited from bundling any of its products with Tepezza or Krystexxa, and from using any product rebate or contract term to exclude or disadvantage products that would compete with those drugs. It also prevents Amgen from buying any competitors to the two Horizon drugs without the FTC's permission. The lawsuit had raised concerns over increased oversight on mergers and acquisitions in a sector that often turns to consolidation to power future growth as patents on older treatments expire. Shares of Seagen Inc (SGEN.O), which is in the process of being acquired by Pfizer (PFE.N), rose 1.5%.

Samsung's 11-year-old investment in ASML has been hugely lucrative. Over the past decade, ASML shares have delivered a whopping 25% annualised return to its shareholders. It's part of Samsung's ambitious $230 billion commitment to bolster South Korea's semiconductor and high-tech sectors over the next 20 years. Moreover, Samsung's cash is probably held in overseas affiliates and subsidiaries across different jurisdictions; its annual report lists hundreds of entities abroad. That should help ease Samsung’s vexing cash bind, but the company may still need to come up with some creative funding choices.

But Li's declaration on Tuesday that it's time to "ramp up" investments again risks wiping out the hard-earned investor goodwill. Despite Li's assurances that Sea will keep emphasising self-sufficiency and cost efficiencies, investors promptly erased some $10 billion, or 29%, in market value. In July, the latter injected $845 million into its Southeast Asian arm, signalling a price war may be on the horizon.

HONG KONG, Aug 15 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hong Kong has lost some permanent appeal. The introduction of two sets of approvals was mandated three decades ago when foreign investors wanted additional protections to invest in the first wave of Chinese firms listing in Hong Kong. China's domestic securities laws have since developed and global investors can now directly buy shares onshore through various channels. That could lead to more onshore shares being issued relative to offshore shares, further diluting minority owners in Hong Kong. In 2020, Hong Kong shareholders vetoed the Bank of Zhengzhou's proposal to avoid such an outcome.

A View of the Met From Behind the Information Desk

On Tuesday, Ms. Schiff published her fourth book of poetry, “Information Desk: An Epic,” about her five years at the museum, off and on. Her last book, “A Woman of Property,” includes the poem “Lion Felling a Bull,” about a marble fragment from the Met. Bain puts Chindata minority owners out of misery
  + stars: | 2023-08-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MELBOURNE, Aug 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Bain Capital has just taught a refresher course in the perils of being a minority investor. On Friday the buyout firm agreed to take Chindata private in a deal that values the Chinese data centre operator it already controls at $3.2 billion. But those who bought in when the U.S. private equity firm took Chindata public in 2020 or were hoping for a bidding war – or both – have good reason to be disappointed. Second, a unit of state-owned conglomerate China Merchants Group countered Bain with a $3.4 billion deal, which Chindata took a month to acknowledge. And it has let investors holding another fifth or so of Chindata stock into the buyout group.

Alibaba previews benefits of slimming down

HONG KONG, Aug 11 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Just months after announcing a six-way breakup, Alibaba's (9988.HK) corporate overhaul is off to a good start. Quarterly sales jumped 14% year-on-year in the three months to June and all its main business units are growing again. That should ease concern that Alibaba is losing market share to rivals like PDD (PDD.O). In logistics and digital media, both reported positive adjusted earnings before interest, tax and amortisation in the recent quarter, versus losses a year ago. It’s early days but a more focused and less bloated Alibaba is starting to emerge.

HONG KONG, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - South Korea’s dealmaking skeletons are back to haunt. Paul Singer's Elliott opposed a $9 billion union eight years ago of Samsung C&T (028260.KS) and Chiel Industries. South Korea’s successful prosecution of Lee, Park and a former minister that oversaw NPS, provided cause for Elliott to demand payback. Elliott sued in 2018 and the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague in June awarded the U.S. fund over $100 million. Far from being the end of it though, President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government is contesting that award in a British arbitration court.
